The MiniFan 480 is already too big for the F18 and you need to increase the size of the fuse to fit it in. The MF 480 is 2.7" in diameter. I'm assuming the GWS EDF-75 is a 75mm fan unit which would convert to about 3 inches so you are looking at a fan housing around 3.1". You'd have to enlarge the F18 even more than I did to fit just one EDF-75. I only increased the height of my F18. Still looks ok but to go much bigger you might need to increase the overall size of the plane.

I ran an attempt at MotoCalc... with some dimensions from the web for the GWS55 unit...

In-flight Analysis - BlueCor Angel F-18 (Twin GWS EDF55-300H)
1000ft above Sea Level, 29.92inHg, 68°F

Motor: GWS 300H; 3860rpm/V; 0.7A no-load; 0.37 Ohms.
Battery: Thunder Power TP2100; 8 cells; 2100mAh @ 3.7V; 0.022 Ohms/cell.
Speed Control: Castle Creations Sprite 25; 0.0025 Ohms; High rate.
Drive System: GWS EDF55-300H; 2 motors (parallel); 2.17x4.49 (1in hub); (Pcoeff=0.22; Tcoeff=0.46).
Airframe: BlueCor Angel F-18; 275sq.in; 35.3oz; 18.5oz/sq.ft; Cd=0.043; Cl=0; Clopt=0.37; Clmax=0.74.
Stats: 243 W/lb in; 62 W/lb out; 26mph stall; 37mph opt @ 33% (34:48, 124°F); 827ft/min @ 14.6°; -607ft/min @ -10.7°.

I must have entered something wrong regarding the model data (probably airfoil etc...) When I calculated twin 480's with a slightly larger span/area it spit out to speed of 117mph... That just didn't seem right to me...

2 GWS edf55-300H fan units with motors @$16 each, might be worth a try... If it's extremely weak, they can always find a home on a butt-ugly foam "combat" delta...

Looks like maybe you entered 8 LiPo cells in series in your MotoCalc data for around 30 volts! That would fry the 300 motors instantly. Each LiPo cell is 3.7 volts.

When I put twin MF 480's in with two 4 cell packs in parallel and 3 turn brushless motors MotoCalc says 48 amps total and top speed of 87 MPH. I don't think the Foamy would survive that. It shows 121 MPH for the speed of the exhaust air, which will always be greater than your actual speed due to drag, etc.

Motor: Typhoon 3 Turn; 2950rpm/V; 1.7A no-load; 0.027 Ohms.
Battery: Thunder Power TP2100; 4 series x 2 parallel cells; 2100mAh @ 3.7V; 0.022 Ohms/cell.
Speed Control: Castle Creations Phoenix 45; 0.0026 Ohms; High rate.
Drive System: WeMoTec Mini Fan 480; 2 motors (parallel); 2.7x3.66 (1.3in hub); (Pcoeff=0.506; Tcoeff=0.807).
Airframe: F18 3D Foam; 275sq.in; 28oz; 14.7oz/sq.ft; Cd=0.041; Cl=0.08; Clopt=0.33; Clmax=0.65.
Stats: 343 W/lb in; 300 W/lb out; 25mph stall; 35mph opt @ 42% (61:37, 89°F); 72mph level @ 81% (13:29, 110°F); 4560ft/min @ 90°; -549ft/min @ -10.4°.

The spray paint ate up part of my cockpit frame and ailerons. Otherwise I might have flown my F18 tomorrow. Tomorrow maybe I will cut some new ailerons and repair the cockpit instead. Used Krylon Fusion paint as that was the only Krylon paint I could find. I tested it on a scrap piece and worked fine. I saved the cockpit and ailerons to spray last. When I went to spray them the can was sputtering some and the paint was coming out on the heavy side. I guess the thicker spray caused it to eat at the foam. At least it was not the entire plane that got eaten up. Next time I'll use my airbrush to spray the cheap water based crafts paint.

I tried a 100% printout of the tiled parts and things didn't exactly line up right (nothing a straightedge and a french curve couldn't fix... I should keep a lookout for a cheap "pre-enjoyed" plotter). I'll have to get the full sheet printed up at a local shop (kinko's style, without the name). I'm definitely leaning towards the larger gws units with some mods to the design. rather than extend the rear fuse to accomodate the larger engines, it seems that a "parallel blended nacelle" (2 completely isolated inlet/fan/exhaust paths) approach would do just fine and even grab some more scale appearance. I'll check in one last time with my "L"HS (a 20 mile trek) to see if they replenished the stock for CF rods/balsa triangles/gws edf units but I can't support them if they don't really support flying (man, if I were into scale trains and team losi trucks that place is Nirvana).

anyone have pics of their F-18's with twin fans?

Didn't get to paint or even fly mine. The housekeeper for the motel that i am staying at cruched it up and through it out. Said she thought the wings were broken!

I've lost count which one this is but they all were built the same way so I figure the numbers should be close. Someone was asking for weight and thrust numbers a while back. I tried Pilot Smith's method today. Here it is 17.6 oz weight and 39/40 oz thrust. Enjoy.

What did you build with a better than 2:1 thrust to weight ratio Vic?

Tilden,
I am talking about the plans from 3DF for my F-18. This is with an e-flite 370 with GWS C gears, a Castle 25 controller and 3s 1500 Kokam.

LDM, Are you referring to the article in Backyard flier? That is the same designer and builder of the original F-18. If you look back to the original post and on RC Groups you will recognize everyone.
