Status: offline 		I noticed that Horizon are blowing out the Hangar 9 Cap 232 1.20 Size ARFs for only $199 down from $329.

Does anybody have any epxerience with this plane?

I am thinking of getting one and putting it away for later.

I have read the Model Airplane News review at:

http://www.modelairplanenews.com/reviews/chapcap232.asp

and it seems to get a decent write up.

Any comments?

Any comparable planes to compare?

Status: offline 		I've seen em fly... I've seen em in the box... I've talked with those that have them... I've read what many have said... I have no personal experience with them what so ever

However, based on what I've seen, heard, and read, my impression is that they are a very nice model! Put a Saito 180 in the nose and you'll have one ballistic bird. I am struggling to keep the checkbook out of my hands so I don't accidentally end up with a few. This is truely a tempting deal Hanger 9 has going!

I've decided to get one as well. For the last week or so I've been scouring the newsgroups, looking for references to this model, and with one exception all of the comments have been very positive. I'll be ordering mine in a couple of days.

How will you power it? I'm dead-set on a four stroke. The Saito 180 seems to be the engine of choice, but the Saito 150 is only slightly less powerful and has much better fuel economy. The 180 reportedly sucks two ounces or more per minute.

I just paid $118 for two cases of Cool Power 15% ($14.75 a gallon) and was proud to pay it; the LHS wants $16.99 plus tax per gallon. My 60 helicopter isn't exactly miserly on fuel consumption, either; so fuel economy is a consideration with me.

Anyway, I'll be laying my CAP 232 back too; until I can come up with the $700+ for the engine and servos...

Status: offline 		I just read that link you posted, Maverick. What a typical MAN "everything is lovely" puff piece. I particularly like this part:

"I had to add 11 ounces of lead to the nose to make it balance. Not bad, considering the size of this aerobat"

Not bad? He had to stick almost a freaking pound of weight in the nose to balance it, and that's "not bad"??? Man, I got a good laugh out of that. But at least he told us about it. Some of those MAN writers conveniently forget such little details. Others, like Mr. Yarrish, have mastered the art of "positive negatism". I am reminded of why I stopped buying this rag many years ago...

Okay, so we know it might be tail heavy. In fact, that was mentioned in a couple of the many posts I've read over the last couple of days. Forewarned is fore-armed...

Status: offline 		I'm really just toying with the idea of getting one to put away for later. It sounds like the Saito 1.50 or Saito 1.80 would be the way to go, but I wouldn't get this until I was almost ready to fly the thing.

I thought the 1.80 might help offset some of the tail weight, but it is actually lighter than the 1.50

Must use the same block bored out for the bigger displacement.

I just like the idea of getting a $330 ARF for only $200. I guess I don't like to miss out on a bargain.

As for the MAN review, I agree, sometimes they can waffle on with no substance. You have to read between the lines to come up with the 'real' review.

I just put the link in because it was really the only review I could find.

Status: offline 		Maverick, I know what you mean by bargains. I've bought ARFs from "e"Bay,cash deals, etc. even though I don't have a chance of flying them all because of all the engines, servos,etc. I'll have to buy to get them ready to fly.
Every time I see a deal at $100 off or so I get tempted again.

Status: offline 		I have never flown one myself but there are several at my club field. All seem to fly well depending on the owner's thumbs. I have asked and all were satisfied with their purchase. Most flyers were new to this size aircraft. I do not need another model in this size range but for the stated price I will be on the phone to Horizon early Monday morning. FWIW, on plastic covered models such as this one I reshrink the covering and double coat all covering edges with water based polyurethane. I have used several brands with good luck. A small can will do many models. I apply with an auto pin striping brush # 00. Any small brush with do but the better quality brush is best and will last a lifetime if cleaned after use. Bob

Status: offline 		My wife has one with a Saito 150 in it. Not really enough power for serious 3D type acro, but good for a budding IMAC flier. My flying buddy had one of the early kits and he tried to power it with a ST2300. By the time he sorted out the engine, the plane was toast. The firewall came loose, the gear mounts keep breaking and the aluminum gear is too soft. On my wife's airplane most of these problems are cured, except the aluminum gear, it is still too soft. I used a B&B gear doubler to cure the problem and it has been a good flier since. Some are just replacing the gear with one from TNT Landing gear, but I wasn't sure which part number they were using. Other than being a little heavier than most 120 sized acrobats, its not a bad deal. Now, I hear people using ZDZ 40s or Brison 2.4 to power them. I hope they beefed up that gear. An OS 160 FX would be a good choice also.

Status: offline 		I friend of mine at the club has one but it is powered with a BME 2.8 gas engine. Way too much power. Will hang on the prop somewhere a little under half throttle. Flies like its on rails, and he can grease in his landing everytime. After seeing his fly, I think I will get one.

Status: offline 		I have a lot of time one them. I've built 4 with ST 1.4's, Moki 1.8's and 2.1's. I think that they're a great deal of fun. Out of the 4 I have never had to add lead to balance them, nor have I had a problem with them being too tail heavy.
My current setup:
Moki 2.1 with custom radial mount swinging a Zinger 20x10. Bisson muffler, Varsane pump and tank located on the CG.
Hitech 8 ch. Supreme receiver, Duralight 1200 Mah 6v. pack, Futaba (3) 9304's (2) Hitech digitals and a MK elevator bell crank.
It weights 12 lbs, torque rolls at 1/3 throttle, has explosive vertical and Harriers better than the majority of 40% planes.
Recommendations for it:
O.S. 1.6 or Moki 1.8 instead of the 2.1 (there is such a thing as too much power). If you're running a pumped engine (OS, Cline regulator on Moki's...) I recommend sliding the tank back to the cg. There are two locator plates for the wing, make doublers for them as mine wore the holes open. I've worn out the Hangar 9 C/A hinges so replace them with "Klett" type and pin them.
Cap's are excellent performers in the 3D arena due to their excellent tail group. They don't "groove" like Extra's will but then again Extra's don't get "wild and crazy" like Cap's do.

a good value. Depends on what you expect it to do.
Apparently, they vary quite a lot in weight, and where
the weight is. Ive seen some that weigh around 11 lbs
ready to fly. Mine was apparently on the heavy side.
After I made efforts to lighten it, especially in the rear,
total weight with a ST2300 (1.4cube glow) was 12 3/4
lbs including the 10 oz of nose weight. It would fly the
year 2001 SA Advanced class schedule, but the verticals
were a stretch. An 11 lb example would of course be
much better. It's not a good precision flyer.

Status: online 		: Ron - We have done a few of these rubber ducks now-and your comments are pretty fair - BUT the real equalizer on these things is simply a shi- pot of power.
The Tiger one we did had the pipe and worked quite well turning the 18x8 at over 9000-but sucked up money in fuel like crazy.($15.00 a gal)
The little ZDZ40 on a 22x10 -22x8 prop provides the raw pulling power to make this duck a lot more flyable.
It does go up a pound over the tiger - OR just less than a half pound over your ballasted weight! - BUT (again), it needs only a 12 oz tank of fuel. so against your weight rtf-they are the same but with a ton more thrust from the 22" prop.
For a model which is cheap as it gets - a little work and the right engine combo, makes it a pretty darn good flyer - I can go thru the Unlimite IMAC patterns with it -Not as well as with my bigger planes which are easier to see - but it does it and never staggers.
Having finally got these engines sorted out -(vs larger glow stuff) - I am doing my next FAI plane using this same engine setup and a quiet can. (new rear exhaust ZDZ40)
11 lbs - much like the EMC2-only a wider chord and a wood stringer fuselage.
I will let know how it goes
