4" Spinner for TF P-40 - 9/19/2004 2:40:48 PM

For my TopFlite P-40, I have been using the 4" plastic spinner attached
in the kit. But it was broken during warm up of YS120 and 15x8 Master
Airscrew. Probably the propeller got loose and gave much stress to the
spinner. A 15x8 prop might be a little small for YS120, too, caused a
kind of over revolution.
Then I have been looking for a stronger 4" P-40 shaped spinner, but no
one did I find so far.
CB/Associate and Dave Brown have a kind of Std. 4", but they both look
too sharp(tapering) for P-40.
Is there anyone who are using or used a spinner for TF P-40 that is not
from TF? And how is or was it?
I now have one more TF P-40 spinner as a spare, but I hegitate to use
it at present. It may be OK if I set the larger prop tight enough than before,
but I'm not sure. Your help is greatly appreciated.

Richard L,

Yes, it definitely is nice and fit. I will order Dave Brown.
Thanks a lot.
By the way, did you modify any to your shark teeth decal, or is your
shark teeth painted?
My dacal of shark teeth attached in the kit is not like yours.
The color between upper and lower teeth is not black but cream-colored
, so upper teeth does not look vivid like yours.

Yes, the gray colored area on the decal was painted black. Actually, the same area on the cowl was painted black. Then the gray colored area under the upper teeth was cut out from decal and the decal applied onto the plane. As a result, the black on the cowl shows through the cut out on the decal.

I see. I just drew a line over the upper teeth to shape it.
I should have done as you did. This is my P-40. Not so good as yours.
Oh, no this was mine. I crashed mine lately and now am going to build
a new main wing. The fuselage was safe.
Yours looks beautiful with a nice weathering finish and more accessaries.

The spinner Dave Brown 4" Std. has arrived today from Towerhobbies.
Nothing but P-40 shape. Thanks. I should have used these from the beginning.
I have to paint it red.

I used red automotive engine paint on mine from a spray can. So far the spinner has been holding up fine even though I'm using an electric starter on it.

Richard L.,

Thanks, I'll do the same. But I remember you use gas engine for your P-40,
then I have to apply glow registant over red. May paint epoxy from the start.

I am not using a gas engine on my TF P-40. I have a YS 110FZ in it. Glow fuel rarely makes it to the spinner, so I'm not too concerned.

Oh, aren't you.
I'd like to paint fuel proof to make sure since I may touch the
spinnner by fuel polluted hand.

HI all,

Just curious if anyone has checked out or has experience with Prospin spinners from MPI http://www.maxxprod.com/mpi/mpi-11.html
I can't get a profile pic to compare, but I'm in the market for a P-40 spinner too and seeing how this compares to the Dave brown one. I called MPI for a better spec on the shape and was told that he would be posting one soon. He also said that they are less pointy shaped then the previously ones made. Just curious, the Dave Brown looks close enough for me.

Their spinner look very nice...oh, they do not ship
internationally. I'm deeply sorry.
I have to find some shops having their items.

Those MPI spinners are nice. However, they are too "pointy". The P-40 spinner has an almost square aspect ratio. Another word, the length from the tip of the spinner to the backplate is almost the same as the diameter of the backplate. For a 4" spinner, the distance from the tip to the back of the backplate should be 4 1/4".

Hi Richard. Gotcha. After speaking to them, he had explained that they are made less pointy now. Im assuming that he meant less pointy then the photos and previously made ones. So maybe they will be different. He said new dimensions and photos would be posted in a few weeks. I guess we'll see.
So is that the measurement of the 4" Dave Brown spinner then, roughly 4" X4-1/4?

Thanks!
Doug
