One thing I've yet to figure out in all the forums I go to, is what determines whether or not a new topic icon appears?

RCWatch is probably the best example of this working the way I would expect it to work. By this I mean, any time I go to RCW it shows me what is new since the last time I was there. If I leave to another website and return, it tells me any new posts since I left, could have only been a few seconds ago, and all the new posts from the last time I was there show as being read. Sometimes if go back quick enough, it shows no new posts. That's how I would expect it to work.

I haven't figured out how RCUniverse refreshes their new topic reminders yet. Can anyone explain this to me?

The new topic icon was set to show "new" after you had been inactive for a period of 60 minutes on the forum. So, if you woke up today, logged on and the new posts would be shown from your last visit. Now, if you use the forum constantly for say 6 hours they would not be reset. If after 6 hours you took a break for 2 hours and came back then the icons would show the new posts since your last inactivity.

I reset it down to 30 minutes just now as that might be better.

Interesting... thank you.

"last inactivity" - Do I have to not post for 30min or not be logged in for 30min? Because I usually stay logged in all day, but am not always 'active'. I do flip through the forums if I'm on the phone or something (is that activity?), but don't always post until I have a break in the day, like right now

I believe activity is defined as clicking on anything in the forums even if you don't post. Anything that gives the system a clue that you are still there is activity.

I also noticed I could hit "Mark All Forums Read" at the bottom of the main page after reading the messages I had interest in, and it instantly clears the new post notices out. If I happen to have activity before the half hour is up, I just need to hit reload, and it shows all the new posts since the last time I marked the forums as being read. Neat feature.
