Heres my problem. I have this new edge 540 with a saito 180 and 4 s3305 servos. This is my first truly aerobatic plane, my last plane was a super sportster 40 with a tower 60. SO for the first time i had a large range in C.G. THe range is from 4 1/2" to 5 1/4" now at first i balanced it at 5 and added 2 oz to the tail to get it close to balanced ( a little nose heavy). However when one of my buddies took it up to fly it kept trying to climb. Everyone said it was because of the C.G., that it was tail heavy. SO with much luck and my buddys heart beating a thousand beats a minutes he landed it smoothly. So i thought maybe i had gotten confused about where to have my C.G. so i asked my buddy and he said i wanted the C.G. on the highest number to start out with and then move it forward. So i took the 2 oz. of tail weight off. So I went home put it on my C.G. machine at 5 1/4" and it was like 1/2 lb nose heavy. So someone please help me figure this out. DO i want the C.G. (as a beginner) to be 4 1/2" from the leading edge or 5 1/4" from the leading edge?

Status: offline 		It sounds like you are a beginner, all right. Which is fine. Question: why are you messing around with this airplane? Your buddy wants you to start out with the balance point at the highest number and work down? You really need a new buddy.

Status: offline 		Im not a beginner ive been flying for 6 months!!! And i asked my buddy again and he rethought it and realized he told me wrong. The intructions arent very clear though!!!

Status: offline 		Your post doesn't make a lot of sense. I'm not trying to be a smart alleck either. You say the plane is too tail heavy but want to know if the cg should be moved forward? Of course. It just looks a little out of place to be asking questions like that on anything but a trainer let alone a quarter scale.

Status: offline 		If you've only been flying for 6 months and have moved from a .40 size trainer to a 1.20 aerobat you must really have the"gift". The manual for the plane should tell you where the acceptable range is for the c.g. It's usually, but not always, at the main spar on the wing. When it is "balanced", the plane should be horizontal, meaning that the chord line of the airfoil should be parallel to the ground. Start with this and fly the plane for a while. If it wants to climb, it may just need trimming for level flight. A rearward c.g is buying trouble because it will make the plane less stable in pitch and beyond a certain point the elevator will lose authority. Center of aerodynamic pressure must stay aft of center of gravity to maintain stability. I can't help but think that you're not ready for this level of performance only 6 months out from learning to fly; no offense meant, but learning to fly is like Airplanes 101 your freshman year. and Edge 540 is a graduate course.

Status: offline 		I disagree. I maidened my trainer and was flying my UCD .46 less than 3 months later(75 flights on it now), closely followed by a H9 Cap 232 and a Funtana 90, and I am hoping to mabye get my 28% Edge airborne before winter rolls around.

Some people pick it up faster than others

I don't think it's such a jump from a Super Sportster to a 1/4 scale edge if you are cautious at first. I think he is just a little confused by which way is which when it comes to CG. I've seen a flyer at my field with many years of experience tell me that moving the CG back makes the plane nose heavy...!
