I have a Bisson wrapround muffler for the engine. Problem is it keeps coming loose from the vibration. I have tried lock tight, brackets to hold the muffler to the firewall and wire to keep the screws from coming loose. Still no joy. I am thinking of welding the muffler nuts to the screw. If I need to take it out I would than cut the nut off. Desperate measure, too tired to keep opening the cowl. Help

Haris,

It is a known fact that large single cylinder engines vibrate more strongly than smaller ones, or than opposed twin cylinder engines.

The Bisson muffler that you have is a reverse engineered product, designed, perhaps to fit this MVVS engine.
I have never actually seen this muffler on this engine and MVVS cannot take this responsibility, since it is an after-market product

One thing I can think of to solve this problem is to use castellated nuts and drilled bolts, with split pins to hold them together.

You used the word wires. I suppose you did not mean safety-wires, as are used in full sized aircraft, with drilled nuts and bolts.
The safety wires are so routed, between adjacent fasteners, so that when one begins to loosen just a small fraction of a turn, it attempts to pulls its 'neighbor' in the tightening direction, which cannot be done, so they all remain tight.

They never can open, unless the safety wire is physically removed.

If you live in close vicinity to an airport, where real planes are repaired, it may be a good idea to get acquainted with an aircraft maintenance person, who could guide you and help you obtain the special pinch-and-twist pliers and the stainless steel wire itself and the nuts and bolts that you need.

If you can post some photos if the assembly, I may have other ideas.

I have used safety wires on the bolts as you have recommended. It works well. Too well. The muffler head remained tight to the engine but the muffler barrel broke away from the muffler head where it is welded. This was after three flights. I had attached brackets to the barrel fixed to the firewall. I suppose the vibration from the engine caused a strain on the welding at that point. I can easily weld it again.

My engine is giving 7100 RPM using a Bolly 22X10 prop. That is great power. Should I decrease the RPM by using a bigger prop eg. 24X10? I do not need that much power.

I also have some problems with the engine rough at half or below throttle. Its tone is not constant. Why is that? I have had two gallons of fuel through it. Is it still running in? Or is my tunning off on the low speed needle? Too rich? It idles at 2000 RPM

Haris,

The 7,100 RPM you are getting is beyond the rated RPM of 6,800.

On the ground, you would want the engine at a lower than rated RPM, so it will have room to unload at speed.

You can also try a 22x12 - 25x10 props.

I cannot be sure this is the reason your muffler is falling apart, but it could be the reason.
Just modifying the muffler internally, by welding aluminium webbing, around its joints and connections, could also change the resonance RPM and prevent the muffler from from disintegrating.

I also suggest that you contact Bisson, by E-mail perhaps, and tell them what you are experiencing.
They may want to replace your muffler with an improved version, that will remain in one piece.

As I told you, this item is not supplied by MVVS and was not designed by them.

I know you are right. A 22X12 or even 24X10 might be better. But how about the rough engine at half or below throttle? Is it due to tuning of the low speed needle? Is it too rich?

Harris,

This could possibly be so.
I do not have a 58 cc engine that I can run, to check this out, but you can try it.

If leaning it down has a positive effect, you could lean it a little more.
If the opposite is true, you can always richen it.

A larger, heavier prop also has more flywheel effect and can smoothen a rough running engine somewhat.

But do it in small increments. You don't want to lose reliability, from having your settings radically rich, or lean.

Haris,

There is a new, power adding silencer available for the MVVS 58 cc gas engine.

It is comprised of two parts, the silencer and Teflon sleeve, and the adapter.

Here is a photo:

There are two MVVS outlets in the US.
You can approach them directly.

Stefan,

I don't currently have such a silencer here to look at.
I will have an answer for you in a few days, about if it is ready for a smoke system, or what prepatation is needed.

In general, all silencers can be adapted for smoke, if you can do some handywork.
