Dan, let's just put together a proposal and reword that sentence so it clearly defines "maximum/peaked" rpm, and toss that "capable" thing.

You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink..

wrote the rules for QM-40 (THANKS JIM GAGER!!!!)
Made Q-500 a national event and everyone had to throw away their perfectly good $225 Rossi's to buy Nelson's.

If you and others honestly believe the best thing to do is to leave the rules alone, Hey I am all for it. Less work for me!!!!!

PUT these words away and save them for a rainy day. IF 424 is run as is you will see an entirely different animal than the animal you are flying in NEPRO, APRA, or here in the midwest with FP 40's.

However, I am not going to sit back and watch it happen!

By the way if a rule proposal is to be submitted it needs to be done prior to the end SEPT.

TICK TOCK, TICK TOCK.

Dan,

The ability to have these open public discussions is wonderful isn't it?

Any kind of technical rules can always use refinement. Some see it as splitting hairs, but reducing ambiguity through clarification and consensus leads to better rules.

I told myself I would back off. I tried, I really did . But Dan - really?
If I set my engine so that it is NOT capable of exceeding 16.5 on the ground because of the way the needle is set. Then I am legal under the AMA 424 rules. I have satified all requirements for having a legal engine.
Now if that is not a quibble , then I never heard one. And now I have to question my understanding of the word capable. Jeez, I must be losing my mind - nothing is real. Alice, how do I get out of here?
One last attempt at reality; let the 424 contest director figure out what the rules are trying say. It is obviously beyond you and me.

MDP, I am a charter NMPRA member (NMPRA 0o). Flew F1 and II before going overseas (early 70's) for a few years. After leaving the AF, I settled in S. MD - one reason because there were three clubs hosting Q500 with in 30 miles. (Today, PGRC is only one on the whole central East Coast.) My newer F1 engines were not legal in Q500, but I still had my early K&Bs that were, and for a few years in the early 80s I could compete. when Q500 became 428, I was too busy putting three kids thru college to devote the additional time and resources. When PGRC added 424 to their racing schedule, I gradually got back into 424. I never - even in the 60's - put the time and effort necessary to be truly competitive. I still just want to have fun - don't want to mess with syringes, bladder tanks, or needling on the line to get on the nonexistent pipe etc. So I am probably never going to move up .
What we need now, is someone to volunteer to be the Contest Director. You want the job Mike?

Regis,

I too am tired and don't want to play anymore!

The problem as I see it is, YOU and I can't agree! How can it be fair to all participants If your and perception of the rule is different from the CD's? Let's attempt to take that decision process out of the hands of the CD and just clarify the rule.

All I want is 424 to be run at the NATS, and for all participants to play on the same level field to START with, and with the same understandings of the rules.

DONE, I hope!!!

We WILL have this rule re-written so that there is no misunderstanding or grey areas. It may take some time and a few rough drafts, but it seems fairly obvious that the perception of the rule is unclear. If even two people read the rule differently and can't agree on what the rule is saying, then it is in need of some touching up....

Got to go race in Medford Or., in my efforts to support some much needed West Coast racing...

Dan, I'll be in touch and will hopefully have something for you to review mid next week....

later,
Randy

Interesting thread here.........

1. We have a discussion about 424/APRA/NEPRO/etc.
2. We have a big-headed National Chumpion.....
3. We have people arguing over Q500 designs.....

Here are my opinions...take them as you will....

1. I would like to see 424 flown at the Nats! I don't feel that the current 424 rules fit what we should have in an entry level class due to two reasons already mentioned in this thread. I don't think high $ composite airplanes should be allowed, and I don't agree with the 16,500 rpm rule for reasons already mentioned--under what conditions is the engine not to be "capable" of over 16,500 rpm's?

2. What's there to say? THE GUY HAS A REALLY BIG HEAD!!

3. These arguments should be kept private between the individuals involved. There isn't much of anything that can be done on a Q500 anymore that can be considered "original". Every airplane out there shares AT LEAST one major design feature (besides the dimensions in the rules) with EVERY other Q500 in existence!

Just my opinions.....right or wrong...

I have split out the portion of this thread dealing with The Smasher versus The Racer II and it can be seen at http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/tm.asp?m=243141 if you really want to see it.

A backup of the unedited 424 Unification thread can be seen at http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/tm.asp?m=243006.

Everyone who has posted to the original thread should still receive notifications..

I have moved this topic into the newly created Pylon Racing Hot Topics section. I will leave a redirect in the Q-500 Racing section for a few days.
