OK finally got to go to the hobby shop, & what a let down, even though I rang to make sure they had landing gear & canopy large enough for the Extra & a full colour range of monokote, I wanted maroon & cream, saddle up & move out for the 1¼ hour trip to town.

It turned out that their extra large landing gear & canopy would have been big enough for a 40 plane if you were lucky, & their full range of monokote turned out to be 6 colours from the solarfilm range.

Not wanting to totally waste the trip, my colour scheme will now be red, dark yellow & white, with black trim.

Won’t be going back to that hobby shop real soon, got to find a good reliable mail order place.

So I started to cover the tail feathers (white & dark yellow), this is my first time using film of any kind, I’m a old silkpaper & dope man, it’s not looking too bad, only a few small wrinkles, would help if I had some proper heating irons & gun instead of the clothes iron & wife’s hair dryer.

As I get a bit more done I’ll post some pics

Here are a few pics of my cover job so far, be kind it's the first time I've used film covering & I know I've done a crappy job of it.

Still need to put a black pin stripes over the colour changes & to hide film overlaps.

If it look real bad I may redo it after a few test flights (if I haven't thrown it in to the ground by then)

G'day CARTERrc,

I just printed mine on A3 sheets & taped them together, or you could take them to a plan printing company & get them to run it off on continuous feed paper but be prepared to pay many $'s for them, check with silvereagle he may be able to supply printed plans cheaper than you could get them done here.

G'day
I have finally got my plans for this plane printed out took 2 A0 size paper just for the wing sheet . Now I have a question with the leading edge. The plans say to have a sub leading edge then a thin balsa rod in front of that then shape that rod to the shape required. My Question is is it possible to get the right size leading edge already shaped and be done with the shaping and the subleading edge?

G'day CARTERrc, answer no, the leading edge has a taper to it from root to tip. What I did was to build the wing up using the sub-leading, then fixing the leading edge (which I cut over size) to the wing, then the top & bottom 1/16" cover sheets & used their curves to shape the leading edge with a razor plane & sand paper, the trick was to glue several grits of sandpaper to 12" long 1"x2" pine, it shapes up real quick & easy, it's not a major pain to do if you take care & some time

G'day Buz
Thankyou for the reply, but what if the leading edge was the right size for the biggest rib and then I just sand it ti the right shape for the smaller rib?

G'day Carter

A couple of points

1. The LE stock would have to be 7/8"x1/4" - may not be a size you could get
2. Fit - LE radius to match wing shape
3. Would require about the same amount of work to get it to the required shape
4. Cost

You would be surprised how easy it is to do compared to building up & shaping the cowl

G'day Buz
Thankyou very much for clearing that up for me. I will do it by the plans and TAKE MY TIME!!!!. One more question could you please tell me the dimensions of the leading edge and sub leading edge in metric mms please. I am only 15 and don't know the conversions yet! Thanks for all of your help, I'll get building right away tomorrow.

G'day Carter

25.4mm to the inch so just multiply by the fraction ie 7/8" = 25.4/8x7 = 22mm appox, toy will find that the common sizes will round up/down to 0.5mm

But just cut it from a sheet of 3/8" (9.5mm) to fit the sub LE with a 5-10mm over hang (at least) remember that 1.5mm of the 5mm will be taken up by the 1/16" ( 1.5mm) cover sheet on each side

G'day
After 4 solid days of working I have finally got the wing complete. As this is my first build I do not know the secrets, but thi wing looks right and what I am happy about is that there are no dips in the front sheet just behind the leading edge. If I get around to it I will post some pics!!!!!!!!

SilverEagle was having problems with the site and shut it down. He is currently out of action with family stuff and is not reachable by PM or e-mail as well.

On the plus side, I have those plans and can e-mail you a copy if you PM me an address...
