Better Solution....

I agree that it is far better to loose a small plastic gear taht is easy to change. in my case, the nearest hobby store that I can get these from is nearly an hour one way. So that mean I have to buy in bulk (2 - 3 packages) each time. Not a problem.

Now as to the better solution. I'm betting that the next "weakest" link would be the Spur Gear which is even easier to change out than the pinion gear. Also, I'd expect that the spur is still weaker than the reast of the aircraft.

Now again, if one were going through pinion gears left and right, perhaps they need to stick with that gear because they are obviously slamming into the ground, probably nose in, pretty hard. I'm not an expert by any stretch of the imagination, but I have slowed down on buying pinion gears due to learning how this thing moves. I'm still taking som pretty hard hits when "landing" but at least my gears aren't shattering any more.

I feel that I am now doing "good enough" to go with a brass gear and willing to "risk" something else in the chain. But that something not being the FCU <heh>

Guy's.......Save yourself alot of money and aggravation and read my previos post in this thread. It list's a part number for a plastic pinion that works great on the caliber m24 heli. I've crashed over and over again since installing this pinion and have broken NOTHING. My previous post list's the part number. Install it and forget about it.

*Bump* (with story)

I'll be testing my "brass pinion gear" now that I've taken out yet another plastic one.

The air was pretty calm last night so I take the M-24 out in the yard and hover off my "Heli-pad", Hanging in the air for a bit bump the trim a little.... looking good, not a lot of wind gusts so I figure I'll head out over the firepit and come around the tree at the other end of hte yard. Make a nice coordinated turn... coming back towards me I notice that I cannot see my "Stripes" so I pull the throttle down a bit and realize that the nose was up not that the RPMs were high... So I increase throttle again and wouldn't you know it... just as I realized that the nose was up and I was increasing throttle which made the heli slow down its approach towards me. But before I could bring the nose down *gust*... There it goes... backwards and moving fast.... I managed to level it off as I was lowering the throttle... not enough. Tail strike.

The tail strike was hard enough to break the boom support shafts clasp.. not bad in itself but the boom support shaft went straight up and managed to catch one side of the flybar... which then proceded to wrap itself around the support shaft.

So today, I'll be heading back out to the hobby store and picking up a set of flybars and anotehr boom support... will probably grab up another pack of pinion gears just in case I need to make adjustments to the brass one that I'm working.

Also: does anyone know what the length is on the XR-1 main rotor shaft...? I still have to get that one back in the air but since getting the M-24 I haven't really cared about the XR-1. Will probably get it back into the air and try to sell it. (Cheap)

Techie (Paul)

It was good to meet you last weekend and check out the M-24s together. I also like the flying field too.... Very nice. I look forward to getting my place out there so you can show me what it will do in the hands of a Pro.
