Would a 1.4 cubic inch engine be good enough for this plane??

I think that it would work - I can't see why not - I went from a 1.20 OS 4-c t an OS 1.60 2-c and it not only fixed the CG problem, but it gave the airplane a very credible aerobatic aerobatic flight envelope.

    Regards,

    Eric.

    Greetings,
Have followed this thread since its inception. The Chipmunk is attractive to me since it can be flown, not just powered by large engines. Dick Pettit with his Chipmunk powered with an OS FS- 120 gave me the info that I needed. I plan to to power mine with my trusty OS 1.08 two-stroke.
I believe that I can, with careful location of batteries and one of my heavy washers (made from1/2" to 3/4"sections of old rifle barrels!) complete the model without adding 20oz. of weight in the nose. Should be a delight fo fly, especially with a lower wing loading.
    more to come.
    Jim

    Greetings, again,
The GP Giant Chipmunk kit arrived in pristine shape. I had read of the dimensions, but in the 'flesh', so to speak, this is a pretty large model! The fiberglas work-cowl, fuse, wheel pants, gear fairings, and center section-all beautifully done. The cowl has a 1/2" band of carbon fiber glassed into the inside trailing edge for reinforcement. The Center section is a very sturdy fiberglas layup, while the three-piece lite-ply/tempered aluminum dihedral brace is very stout.
So now to work-should be a delight!
    Jim

    Hello all,
I finished my Chippy the other day and flew it that night. All went well. Just a little over proped with a YS 1.20 and a 17X6 APC. Going to try a 16X6 instead. On thing I did in anticipation of the dred balance problem was to replace the Elv. push rods, which weigh about 3 oz., with .098 carbon rods which weigh about 1/3rd of an oz. I used ,at the elv., a GP 4X40 threaded coupling and clevis. The other end I used a piece of brass tubing flattened to an oblong shape as to hold the 2 carbon rods and a piece of 3X32 wire in between them. All components held together with the black rubberized C/A glue. Use a solder link at the servo and should work very well. Mine weighed out at 13 1/4 lb's. I had to place the 1700 mah nicad pack behind the c/g to balance. I was shocked after all the stories. My plane flew very well and straight with only a couple of clicks of up elv.
    Good luck,
    Tom

    Hi Tom,
Well done-on both your finished Chipmunk and the follow-up message! You mention placing the 1700mah battery behind (aft?) of the cg?
I, too, find the various doom-and gloom stories hard to comprehend. For years I have found Dick Pettit's reports to be factual and honest-your Chipmunk experience bears out his assessment.
Meanwhile, I'm plugging along, at my usual slow pace. Pin hinges except for CA hinges for the flaps. I just purchased a JR 7202 and will set it up for the Chipmunk as well as my other six active models.
    great hobby!!

I just finished up a new Chipmunk. I am using a Webra 120 and managed to get most of it inside. I had to open the right inlet in the cowl for the carb. I placed the 1000 ma 5 cell battery opposite the motor and have a heavy prop nut and APC 17x6 prop. I did not use the cockpit and used Sullivan blue rods to replace the steel. I think I'm a bit less than 13 pounds dry. I will check it a do the maiden Sunday. Its a very nice ARF. I added about 1 ounce to the front and now my CG is a bit forward of 4.75". After the maiden I will remove the lead. I also use C-tronics on board glow drivers.

Just trying to keep it light and fun.

    Hi Carl,
Good to read about your Chipmunk, and best luck on the maiden flight! Looking forward to reading all about the first flight adventure. Where did you install your C-tronics glow driver batteries?
I plug away, a bit at a time. No deal breakers, just a slow pace. Engine is in, cowl fitted, some hinging done, fuse servos and tank in-just lots of details!

I will weigh it tonight and post a picture or two of my setup. The maiden went well. One bent LG on a bounce landing but it flys well and seems like it has no drag, a real floater.

This thing can go together real fast.

The scale says 13 pounds 4 ounces. I had thought lighter. The C-tronics is next to the receiver. The battery and throttle are up front with the motor.

I have changed props on my YS 120 to a 16X6 APC and all is well. Plenty of vertical and runs well at 9900 RPM. I am pleased with my Chippy. The YS weighs 33 0z. plus the slim line muffler which weighs about 2 oz. What do some of the other motor combo's weigh. Again with the cabon elv. pushrods my batteries are well behind the C/G, about 3 ", for 4 3/4 as recommended. I am a Pylon Racer and this is a very welcome change for me.
Also Carl are you an NVRC member. If so my Dad is Bob Scott.
    Good luck all,
    Tom
