LOL, But 20 mil to Paul Allen is like .30 cents to us....

And it had a better return than some of his investments!!

Did any of you see the Discovery channel program last night about the SpaceShipOne project? At the end of the show there was someone flying a little RC version of it. Probably be an ARF of SpaceShipOne available by the end of the week.

And hopefully there should be enough eccentrics out there, wanting a ride in space, for him to possibly break even.

Ride into space: $20,000,000

Being able to say you where in space: Priceless

Yea, Melville brought a copy of it with him to the lake last month and showed us. It was awsome to watch it with him and have him explaining what was going through his mind at certain times and what was happening with the ship. There was more to it on this special because there were 2 more flights, but it was way cool to see it with him. What a bunch of people. Totally amazing. I can see the next set of plans, build your own moon lander! I'm in! Whoo Hooo!

I saw a story about Spaceship One on 60 Minutes last night. Burt Rutan said flights into space would initially cost around $100,000. After a while, the price should drop. Way out of my price range. But I can see people doing it. It will be interesting to see if it "takes off".

The next step would be orbit which would be a hole new ball game. The only way they did what thewy did was by touching space and falling back. If they went fast enough to enter orbit (or any faster at all) they would be sol. It is one thing to touch space, another to orbit. I am not trying to take away from what they did but only looking at the next step.

They touched on that on 60 Minutes. The plan calls for a space hotel of sorts. Rutan described a clear dome, one could float inside of weightless, looking out into space and down on earth. A round spinning station that could hold water, that you can swim on instead of in. You may even be able to run on it, in a simulated gravity (centrifugal force), far lighter than Earth's. Big dreams. The only thing missing will be HAL. Or will he?

I think for any extended space stay, something that spins creating gravity is a must. They say the muscles and bones start breaking sown very quickly from lack of gravity (from not working I guess). For these new orbital plans they will need a different plan to git the ship in and out of orbit. Have any idea how they are going to do that? If they stay in orbit the re-entry problem will be re-visited.

If anyone can do it, Rutan can! He is pretty amazing. I don't think any of his ideas have ever failed.

I liked his plan of the water in the outside of the hotel in space. You would swim, but much higher in the water and be able to swim really fast. That would be kinda cool!
