Hi all,

I know this topic has probably been covered before. But I am sick and tiried of having to keep replacing tail motors on my aerohawk! I have been using Mabuchi FF-n20pn motors for the tail.

It has been even worse since I moved to lithium batteries. I have gone through 6 motors in the last few weeks! They only cost $1.00 each. I guess i'll have to stock up on tonnes of the motors!

I was thinking of either getting a high frequency tail motor controller or going brushless all together on the tail. It just costs a bloody fortune! I recently just spent $150 on going brushless for the main motor.

So what have you guys been doing to avoid burning tail motors???????????????

Thanks,

Alan

Read my posts in here (post #62 and post #63 with the pics). The factory tail motor on my Esky honey bee (and most likely on all geared tail mini heli) run cheap copper contacts as brushes and rated at very low voltage. The CN12RXC motor from the EDP 50XC DD conversion kit is rated at higher voltage and runs carbon brushes as real brushes. Look at the difference in the pics and you can see that the CN12RXC motor will last a much longer time.

get a new cheapo dragonfly, it uses drive tail drive from the main gear.

Hi,

EDP 50XC DD conversion. You mean the GWS kit don't you? I see helihobby don't sell that kit, only the
propellers.

I thought direct drive propellers would make the motor work harder and wear it out quicker.

Anyway, i'll give it a go.

I'll track it down somewhere.

Thanks for help,

Alan

The CN12RXC motor has a long core which means high-torque and low-rpms. The 3020 blade that come with the EDP50XC kit has a much smaller surface area than the factory tail blade and therefore provides similar thrust at higher rpm than with the big factory tail blade. The 3020 blade and CN12RXC make a perfect match, so perfect that even if coupled with the slightly higher pitch 3030 blade (can't easily tell the higher pitch unless put side-by-side with 3020), the CN12RXC will run a bit too much load and gets too hot. The main reason why EDP50XC is much more durable is because the included CN12RXC motor runs real brushes instead of cheap thin copper contacts. Also you can configure the kit to blow air thru' the motor and therefore cool down the motor much more efficiently.

Here's one place that sells the EDP50XC kit.

I’ve had my Jabo 2 for about three weeks but only managed a total of maybe 2hrs fly time and I’m already on my third motor.
BUT…
I am working on getting a Dual Tail Motor bracket manufactured, initially for my own sanity, but if it works I am planning to go into semi mass production….

I should have a prototype up and running in a week or so, so I’ll let you know how it goes…

What voltage Lipos are you using? if its a 11.1 then you will most definatly burn out tail motors if you dont upgrade it. Also your ESC maybe in trouble too if you keep it up on the 11.1 V

Will those work with my Esky Honeybee? Does it include everything i need? will it last longer then the stock tail motor? where can i get replacement tailmotors?

Hi all,

Well I tried the GWS EDP-50XC direct drive kit on my aerohawk heli.

It was crap! The propeller didn't provide enough thrust to counteract the main motor torque. I even tried adjusting gyro gain all the way to 100%. Didn't make a difference! If the prop was bigger and provided more thrust then I think it would work ok.

I think i'll stick with the geared tail dirve system.

And gee the direct drive motor is bloody noisy! Unbearable actually. Due to the fact it is runniung under extreme rpm conditions.

EDP50XC is NOT a direct bolt-on for the esky honey bee. I just strapped the motor to the original geared housing like this:

Aerohawk, I don't know why the conversion won't provide enough power for your heli. It provides more than enough power for me. The motor is only mild warm after 15-min of continous head-holding hover. Check out my video here.

Don't know how your ESC works. To increase tail motor power, I increase "proportional" trim instead of "gyro" gain. And most importantly, make sure the blade is installed such that air is sucked in on the rough side of the blade and blow off the smooth side of the blade. If installed the other way, you get big noise and low thrust.

Since the motor is facing the opposite direction, do you have any problems keeping the prop on the motor? is it a really tite fit? Did you buy the EDP50XC from the earlier mentioned online store?

Is the diameter of the EDP50XC motor too big to fit in the stock tail housing?

I bought the EDP 50XC kit from Zebra Hobby as I'm in Vancouver Canada. I basically tapered the entry of the hole a little bit and force in the blade against some kind of wedge (like a book shelf). Make sure the blade is almost all the way in. I had it half way in at first and when I tried full tail throttle the thrust was so great that the blade shot out of the shaft at lightning speed and cut my lips. Don't hammer the blade in or you'll break the end housing. The factory tail housing is oval-shaped to fit the factory motor. The CN12RXC is round. Besides, I want to blow air thru' the motor for better cooling so I have to mount the motor the other way anyways. I know the fabrication is not elegant but it works. An added advantage is that if you hit the motor end cap on hard object, the mount (strap) will just loosen up saving the motor. If you want to quiet down the tail with the EDP 50XC kit. Run the 3030 blade instead of the included 3020. The 3030 runs higher pitch and provides more thrust at lower rpm. Be cautious though the motor will run much hotter. I decided to run 3020 and live with the high pitch buzz for now.
