Hi Just started the build up and have a question, I'll also post the build here for others to see as I go along. I've finished gluing and shaping the horizontal stabiliser and fitted the elevator. I had problems deciding how to shape the end cap, but got there in the end. Instructions state 5/8" up and down for the elevator but this is barely reachable with my current configuration. Could you take a look and let me know what I've done wrong with the end cap shaping, I can't get my head round it. [:o] Thanks Lee

The stab end cap fairing at the trailing edge will hold up the elevator. You have to cheat in that area and cut it back some. It won't be too obvious when everything is painted.

the problem is that at this time according to the far right picture is that the hinge line is forward of the elevator. look on the drawings and you will see a short line drawn thru where the hinge is . that is where the hinge pivot should be. the full size a/c has the hingeline/pivot line equal to the tip of the elevator, that is the curved tip, and extends all the way to the elevator horn. this also means that the Robart hinges need to be set deeper in to the elevator. I have built four of these Y/A P-47's. Two with G-62's and G-38's Both engines do a good job and seem to as fast as each other. the 62's get off the ground quicker . tom

Hi Tom That pic was just to show the inside of the end cap. The hinges are still loose, and when I pulled it out thats where it sat. I have got the hinges bedded in to the elevator slightly, and notched for clearance, as juvatwad said, the limiting factor is the end cap where it touches the elevator restricting movement, not sure how to relieve it. Any shots of your elevator setup? Cheers Lee

Hi Bit more done, all cover strips are on, final shaping to the end caps has revealed a little more travel. I noticed some small holes in the ends of the inner foam section so used small carbon rods to help align the two surfaces up. All done less the glassing. Tomorrow comes the wings !! Lee

Hi Just reading up on the wings in preperation. Step 69 in the instructions mentions gluing a piece of 1/64 scrap ply to the wing tip before gluing on the fibreglass end cap. I haven't seen this before, is it the usual method ? Lee

I don't have a picture of my stab, but the part I cut back is far out on the tip of the stab where it begins to curve rearward. There is still a bit of a lip on mine, but it's less than that on yours. I used the plywood scrap, because a fiberglass to wood bond is better than a fiberglass to foam bond.

yes its so you have more surface area for the glue to adhear to, and so theres more of a hard surface for the tip to glu to instead of the soft foam. mitch

Cheers guys Finished off the elevator earlier today. I'd forgotten about the metal horn. Started on the wings now, currently gluing up the trailing edges of both flaps and ailerons, just about to trace and cut out the ply tip plate. Cheers Lee

Hi Again, reading ahead. The method suggested for mounting the aileron servos, bearing in mind YA recommend a real strong servo on the aileron, how is the mounting method holding up, i.e to the cover held in with 4 small screws. Maybe me, but this sounds a little weak. Has anyone mounted the servo to the floor of the servo well?? If you have, any construction tips or pics would be very helpful. Lee

Anybody have a part number / supplier for the 1/2A Horn used on the rudder in the concealed setup?? Cheers Lee

I don't recommend mounting the aileron servo to the hatch cover. This is one of the possible sources of flutter/wing failure cited with this particular model. I used BVM wing servo mounts and mounted the servos to the floor of the servo well. http://www.bvmjets.com/Accessories/carbon.htm I also did not use the conceled rudder horn, but instead set up a standard pull-pull system.

you can mount the servos in either place, they are both strong enough, i have 2 P-47s and one has the servo mounted on the hatch and the other is glued in the wing and i havent had any problem with either of them. on the 1/2a horns i got mine from dubro if i remember corectly, but i cant remember the part number. which version do you have (bubble or razor)? motor? posible color scheme? Mitch

That's true, you can mount the servos anywhere you want, but Yellow Aircraft specifically recommends against mounting the servos on the hatch covers in the addendum to the P-47 wing construction.

Juvatwad, I am also building a Yellow Jug. Did you use BVM part #5545 to mount the aileron servos? Did you make any mods for the BVM part or just glue two blocks in the wing and screw the servo mount to it? Also, I have a question about your username, were you or are you in the 80th? Hi I have found another product for wing mounting which seems very simple to use, no gluing of blocks etc. Wing servo mounts As for my 47, It's a bubble top, I haven't fully decided on an engine yet, a Zen 45, Fuji 50, or even a oki 210 (I'm new to gas so will have more confidence in the Moki but with added nose weight) My flying field is a disused airfield and is the actual field of the 56th Fighter Group at Boxted. Boxted Airfield The scheme I had planned on using was Gabreski's HV-A, but this is not set yet, I'm still searching for good documentation. Is this the Goldberg 1/2 a horn mentioned ?? Tower 1/2a horn If so I can't see how it works, I assumed it would be a 90 dgree horn, with a shaft of the back to glue into the rudder. Lee

HogCrewChief, I did use #5545 without any mods. The mounting blocks are part of the set from BVM. Good guess on the name, I was in the 80th 1995-96. What is good?

Hi All the TE strips are glued on, 1/64th plywood end caps shaped and glued, part way through fitting the end caps. Lee

Thanks for the info Juvatwad. Did you just glue the wood blocks to the floor of the servo bay and then just attach the servo mount and servo? You did not need to beef up the box at all? Nice to find a fellow Juvat! I was a Crew Chief in the 80th from 1998-1999. Thanks, Tony

Glassing question ! The instructions suggest using 3 grades of cloth on the wings heavier to lighter at the tips. On another build up I read just one grade of cloth was used all over in one piece. Any recommendations, one piece is easier but will it have the strength, also what weigth cloth should be used ? Lee

Hog- I assembled the servo to the mounting blocks on a flat surface, then I glued the blocks in their assembled state to the wood base of the servo well. This way, everything was in correct alignment. If you glue the blocks in first, things may not line up right. In a sick way, I sometimes miss the Kun. Living in the Fossil hooch was like being in college again. Heliraptor- I had the old version wing without the additional spars or modified aileron servo cutouts. I didn't feel like cutting into the wing to add spars, so I laid matt carbon fiber out past the aileron servo bays on the top and bottom of the wing, then used graded fiberglass cloth as in the instructions (I think i used 3 - 1 - and .5 oz cloth). I believe the old style wing tended to fail at the aileron servo bay, so I tried to transfer the weak point of the wing out past this spot. I yank mine around with a Fuji 50, and haven't had any problems yet.

for an enigne i use the zen 45 and one of my jugs is almost 30lbs! and usually i never go about half throttle. the 1/2 a horns look like standard plastic control horns just smaller heres the link: dubro 1/2a horns mitch

Cheers Mitch Daft question........how are they fitted to conceal them ?? Bolting through either side of the rudder I imagine would make them stick out too far. My other thought was doubling up a piece of 2.5 mm carbon sheet, gluing it through into the rudder leaving an exposed bit to screw through. Lee

I was just looking at your pictures of your stab. Are you planning to add the Scale hinge covers per the full scale? It's a pretty noticeable feature on the full size plane. I was just wondering. FYI it's an easy thing to accomplish.
