Hey guys,

Here's the scoop, I have an old mach none kit that i got from a guy at a flea market about a year ago. It is missing some wood and the instuckions but i have built a few kits and decided that i would just build it as i went along, like a big puzzle. I did how ever have a sheet that gave a few messurments and a veiw of the plane to work with. It's now to the point were i have to sheet the wing. But i have never sheeted a wing before. So I have a few questions.

1. Does the wing need to be sheeted or can i just put a few extra spars in it and cover it?
2. If I do need to sheet it, what thickness balsa should i use?
3. How would i go about sheeting it?

Thanx for any info,
Eric

Eric,
Put the 1/8" spruce spar in the top of the wing and a strip of 1"
3M fiberglass strapping tape on the bottom, tip to tip.
Perhaps cover the spar with the tape too. Cover with low-temp film.
That'll do er!
Dave

You will still need a spar. Make sure you use the lightest fiberglass cloth available and be stingy with the epoxy or you'll end up with a boat anchor. It is overkill tho. Dave's method would be the preferred way.

Yea i kno that it can end up heave if i'm not careful. I already have the spare in the wing and i am only planing on putin on 1 wrap. maybe 2 if it sames like it needs it. This is only realy to give it alittle strengh and so i can paint the wing, and not cover it. It's kinda wierd but i can glass things fairly well but my covering jobs are just an embarassment.

Well EP124, if you insist, but go EASY on the epoxy.
(Don't even THINK about using polyester resin...)
The cloth should have a matte look when you are putting
it on, and if it looks glossy, you are using too much epoxy.
Use 1/2 to 3/4 oz per sq yard cloth, fill with with thinned Elmers wood filler,
and use just enough paint to make it opaque. That shoud do it.
You could use polyurethane and slikspan too.
