I'll try to describe the problem the best I can,

I have a ZDZ 40 with a Menz 22x8 in a DP extra and I'm having some problems keeping it running smoothly. I did the recommended stand break in with a full gallon of fuel and it ran perfectly the whole time ( with a 20x10 ). Now that I have it in the plane it seems to run poorly by comparison. It also seems to change temperment quite a bit with the temperature outside.

I had an experienced gas guy at the field try and set it up for me. He adjusted the needles a bit and it seemed to run better for a few flights. Later on in the day it cooled off outside and it started running bad again. Its really just the low end that is the problem. It very often quits after being run up over half throttle and then back down again. I also noticed that it is much harder to start when its running this way. The only way I can start it is to give it more throttle that I think it should really have when starting and let it run for a bit at a high throttle setting. Usually when I start it the first time it runs for about 6 seconds or so and then quits. When I start it the next time in the same manner it stays running. My engine box has no top on it so I don't think its an air supply issue. I am using Castrol Syntec 2 stroke oil in the gas ( is this a problem ? )

One other thing I noticed is that it seems to have good power through the first half of the throttle and not really get any stronger after half throttle. Again is this an issue with the prop size or air supply or fuel or is it just that its new? I am really stumped and don't know where to start.

Any help is greatly appreciated! I don't mind the odd dead stick but the engine quitting is eroding my confidence.

Well, seems to me that the low end is off, either too lean or too rich, tough to tell from what you're saying.

The way I did adjust mine is to first take care of the high end. Ask some help so you can take care of the screwdriver and the tach at the same time. Go full throttle and adjust the high end for max rpm, then richen to reduce it by 200-300 rpms.
Once that's done, go back to idle and adjust the low end so that after 15 seconds of idling, the engine doesn't die or burble when going quickly to full throttle.

I have a 22x8 Bolly and my settings are:
low end at 2 turns (might need more than that on first start)
high end at 1 &1/8
7200 rpms peak, 5 gallons through, 97 octane with non-synthetic oil

Hope it helps!

UPDATE!

Got the ZDZ40 running right. I had no top on my engine box (felt it was plenty strong without it) and this is what was causing the trouble. I guess air was entering through the front of the cowl, hitting the back of the engine box and ramming into the carb. This made the engine go rich in flight and after about 5 mins of running this way it would quit.

I put a top on the engine box....and the engine runs perfectly now.
