Hi Guys,

Just flew my f3d today and had a deadstick. I was able to land it fine (a couple of bounces of course). But after landing it, I found that the hinges for the rudder had given up and actually the whole rudder just came apart (lucky it didnt happen in the air).

Anyway, my question is that the tailwheel which they supply is really crappy, it always bends on any landing that is not 3 point perfect. Actually this time I managed to break it.

So my question is what did you guys do for the tail wheel. I am flying off a hard runaway so I need the tailwheel to ROG. Did you guys modify it by using a different tailbracket or what ? I think the current setup puts too much pressure on the rudder but I am not sure the best way to modify it.

Any help especially pictures would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Vipul,

Sorry to hear about the problem. I now check the rudder to make sure it is secure, because I had the same thing happen.

One of the first things I do with an F3D/30 is cut off the tailwheel at the bottom of the rudder.

A skid is what you need. It does mean that to steer on the ground you have to use the throttle a little more to get prop blast on the rudder.

I've made skids several ways. The easiest is to cut a slot in the bottom of the little hump along the seam. Use a piece of 1/8" to 3/16" plywood, groove it, where a piece of piano wire 1/16" to 1/8" can be wrapped around it. Insert it into the slot with polyester resin if you have it. Otherwise use thick slow curing CA. Coat the plywood with CA to fuel proof it.

The plane I did like the above is now deceased, and totally splattered. I'll be doing another one this way this week, or I'll see if I can use a carcass to show you how to do it.

BTW, I'm going to fly a F3D/30 with Pete Reed's Carbon Fiber Doddger gear tomorrow. It's swept back and will put the wheels about where the wing mounted gear puts them. I'll let you know how it does, especially in terms of bounce reduction.

I'll take some pics of the wing mounted gear in a few minutes and post them here and to the other F3D/30 thread.
