To pay homage to all the high dollar airplanes (mainly turbines) that have gone up in smoke.
Some of these guys have lost more money in one dork than I have spent in my entire R/C career!

I can appreciate this, thank you. I lost my Eurofighter this year. A lot of guys that don't fly turbines look at the guys that do and think "elitest" and other such negatives. And to some extent that is true. But some of us, are just guys that walked out to the field one day with our Big Stick .40 powered by a .46fx and better than average servos and saw a turbine fire up and said "Holy Crap, that is amazing".

At least that's what my experiance was. And yes, they are expensive, but I have a lot of disposable income. And I love the hobby. I get a lot of fun out of throwing a prop plane in the air, but eventually I was looking for something more complex. I like all the complexitites of Turbine Jets.

Anyway, back to the loss, I did a lot of research, and have owned a few turbine jets and brand of engines. So I bought what was considered "the best" and unfortunately after around 100 flights, my engine siezed in flight. There was a small fire onboard that melted some wiring, the resultant short killed my control of the jet, and it turned over and nosed in.

Just another model nosed in for whatever reason.................................. But ya, it hurts.

But just like when you lose your favorite P-51, Big Stick, Dragon or any other model, you just go back to the drawing board, get all your equipment checked out and do it again

Thanks for the moment of silence, but as we all know, these things happen in this hobby. And nothing lasts forever

Sean

I've seen a couple of those Composite Jets go in too. They don just break, they shatter!

With all the things to take into consideration when you put your high dollar pride and joy into the air, an inflight fire would not be one of them.
I guess that's just one more item to think of when you launch.
How can you tell when your bearings are ready to kiss off in a turbine?

I have witnessed four turbines bite the dust in the last year. I have friends that have lost another four. Easy come, easy go. A kid with a trainer may feel the same sense of loss as a guy that can afford a turbine, it's all relative. They all have an expiration date.

You really can't. It's spinnining in my case at 123 thousand RPM. When you're turning that fast, the stuff either works or it doesn't. I don't think I've ever seen an in between on bearings in nearly 500 turbine flights I've taken, and the thousands I've seen.

It's just another thing that can go wrong. We all have to worry about range checks, prop condition, airworthiness of the airframe condition of the gear etc. It's just another thing to be aware of on a list that expands as the complexity increases

Yup, we don't fly for the money, we accept the risk because we love to fly, regardless of what it is, how big, how fast, or how expensive, they all submit to gravity and we then feel a bit of sorrow. Then go and do it all over again.

If you love that plane, set it free, if it doesn't return, you should've checked your battery.

Considering that you can either get a turbine aircraft RTF, or buy a VERY nice used car (if not a new one), I think I'll stick to my 35% Extras hehe.....

I lost more in one prop job than I have in my wheels to travel to and from the field. We seem to find a way to support our Hobbie.

Are you kidding? When I see a multi-thousand-dollar toy smashed I'm thinking "What an idiot!"

My homage goes to the indoor free-flighters who combine a gram of material with a lifetime of genius to make a rubber powered unguided model fly 1/2-hour. Meanwhile, I'm in the middle, getting 2-3 weekends out of a gallon of fuel and 2-3 seasons out of an airplane, sometimes guiding it and sometimes un-guiding it.

Hate to see any RC model crash whatever the reason. Cost does not enter into it. It hurts the kid with the slow stick just as much as the jet jockey. Regardless he has my sympathy but no more than the kid with the trainer.
