Hi Pete, i picked up a one of Erny's M.D. Sea Fury's that had been started and the previous owner had lost interest.
Is your Sea Fury one of Erny's?
I am at the moment fiddling with a 3W85 and wrap around silencer trying to find the best position. On my other big gasser's i have put the cylinder down and the wrap around exhausts also poking out down and behind.
What sought of set up for the engine and exhaust have you done?
Could you show a pic. if possible.
I have been thinking of putting the cylinder on the side and modify the exhaust to come out in the correct position on the side.It would take a bit of mucking about with the exhaust stingers.
What does yours weigh? with the GT 80 in?
Thanks Dave.

Dave,
no mate mine is a Vailly build up one. Same saze as Ernies and I think weights are similar. Mine is 42lbs.

The 85 is plenty of power for it but will be harsh, the big single seem to be like that whereas the GT80 twin is smooth as. Great engine for the Seafury.

With the 21x12 mejanik is does 7500 rpm and is still very new, only about 40 mins running time so far. Running 98 ULP, mineral based bike oil. Castrol something or other at 40:1.

I would go for simple exhausts, forget about scale locations etc. Mine are standard, there is an opening in bottom of cowl, they are about 1/2 inch on the inside so you dont sem them and the gasses just flow straight out. Neat set up.

There are pics earlier in this thread showing the set up.

Do you have retracts?

Cheers
Peter

Hi Pete, 42 pounds i was thinking along those lines myself.
I may go for simplicity and put the cylinder and exhaust down.
Yes the 3w85 has gobs of power i have one in my T.F. P47 so i have a handle on the workings.
I have just pulled out the Robart retracts from my P47 9 flights and 2 collapses with the retracts.
The large Robarts are no good above 25 Pounds they have a plastic end piece and if you don't get the landing spot on the side load punches a hole through the end bit only costs $15 but the 2 props were expensive i have put a set in from Custom retracts,
Al who now runs Custom retracts is a flying mate in our club and he usually spots for me when i fly.
The Sea Fury has custom made electric retracts that the previous owner had made they look solid enough but until i test them with one of my landings!.
The problem with his home built retracts is he has nailed them in and no easy way for removal, and experience tells me at some time they will need removal.
I have a set of new Century Jet ready but they don't have much street cred. from my mates.
Dave.

Dave,
great you are in touch with the guy form custom retracts. used to get a few things from Pete Gow when he had the biz. Couple of my models use Custom retracts gear. The set in the seafury is pretty good. I also have a set of the Sierra gear for my Vailly Tempest build. Beautiful gear. I may get it converted to electric when I build that one. Robarts are goiung electric too

By the way I am a Robart agent

Century jet,? yuk rubbish

Cant get those retracts out?? Mate I would be finding a way to do that now as you will need to get em out, that is a certainity.

I have the Sierra cams on my robart P47 gear, aluminium.

Cheers
Peter

Hi Pete, looking a the revs. you are getting out of your GT 80 i would be interested in know much in the way of static thrust you are getting?
One thing about the GT 80 is you will never wear it out and it is known for loving high revs.
I will test mine on Friday that's if the wind dies down. I have a cooking hobby-king 26X10 on my 3W85, i keep wrecking the expensive props so i am down to the Chinese, and i keep doing those as well.
I know static thrust is not the be all and end all of power but it still would be interesting.
Dave.

no idea mate what it would be. Most of our petrol engines need to be run at over 7000 rpm to get into the power band. Guys load them up with huge props that bog the engine down.

Get the RPM up and it will perform like a beauty
