Edwin,

Sorry about the mix up on the firewall offset. I almost did the same. The plane is upside down and the sides are reversed. Luckily I double checked it before gluing the crutches on.

Hey guys. This thread has been real quiet lately. I have slowly been doing a little to my P-47. Wing crutches are placed and glued. Just need to pick up the Robart retractable tail wheel then I can carry on with the fuselage. Main wing is joined, still need to route the retract lines and do a little cleaning up. The wing is pretty big as well as the fuselage. Lots of dihedral thats for sure. I am in no rush to finish and fly it this year. I have two new birds to fly this year so I can take my time. I do have a question regarding your receiver antenna. Are you guys putting it inside the fuse, and if so are you concerned about interferance from the metal push rods for the elevator and rudder?

Craig.

I finished the rework on the firewall box and the intercooler doors. I also assembled the cowl and now need to do the cowl mounts. This is to double check my work on the firewall box. Plan on starting the wing this weekend after a delta dart session with the Civil Air Patrol cadets. Really enthusiastic bunch of kids.

I'm convinced. The TF GS P-47D is my next project as soon as I get tired of my latest love Top
Flite's Stinson Reliant, SR-9. I beefed up the landing gear from a two-piece to a one-piece fixture. Heck, maybe I ought get started on my P-47D and take a year to build. By then I should be tired of the Stinson. Maybe not but get started anyway?!

Yoo-hoo! Oh dear!? May I talk to you? Ain't that how it's done guys?

Peter,
I havnt flown mine yet but have done engine runs and range check. So far no problem. My terminal ends on the push rods are Du-bro captive ball set up, so there is insulation(plastic). Maybe this matters maybe not. I have run alot of antennas inside fuses with metal push rods and never had an issue. I just never cross the antenna over the metal.

G'day Canuk,
yes been I've been busy on other stuff at home so not a lot of time for this. Got a bit done today.

Bit of filler around the last of the intercooler doors and will blend that in tomorrow with some luck.

I have assembled and glued together the bits for the crutch doublers and now have the doublers epoxied in place. Currently they are downstairs curing with suitable bracing - see pics.

Firewall sheets are epoxied together but wiating to get hold of aG62 to do the measure up for the mounts. A friend has a trashed one he is going to lend me for that purpose and hope to get it Sunday (Fri now). So untill I get my hands on that there isn't a lot more I can do for the moment.

I wont start on the wing till I clear the fuz out of the way.

Yours is coming laong nicely, you are right that is a big bloody wing and with that dihedral it should fly very placidly.

hmmm good question on the RX AE. I will run a bit of flex tube down the guts and do a range check with motor running. If I'm at all concerned by it I'll simply run it under the belly with a bit of tape here and there. No one will see it so stop grimacing.

Main concern is not getting the RX AE or any other electronics any where near the engine so no RF interferrence from the spark causes probs.

Edwin: glad you got that sorted out. I nearly panicked when I read your earlier post but have checked, re checked then checked again against the plans to makes sure I'm certain it's correct and it is is.
We have RAAF air cadets here too and they are pretty good mob of kids except when you are actually in the RAAF itself and they get to the meal queue before you - bloody ants! .
Group of the instructors with the cadets are trying to get me involved and I prob will work permitting. I hate to committ to something then have to say sorry because I have a short notice work trip on.

airbatic: Get tired of a Stinson? Are you nuts? Seriously go buy the P47 and enjoy the build, take your time, who cares how long it takes. By the way it's not" yoo honey can I buy this? It's "hello dear look what I just bought!! "
isn't possesion 9/10th of the law or something like that.

Kirk: Mate I'd be real surprised if it caused any probs. I'm also using those captive ball links things, big bolt through the guts and no slop. How far did you range check it for? AE down I'd be looking for at least 100m (thats about 100yards to you lot).

Like you all my AEs are inside the fuz and never had a prob.

Anyway off to pick up the little man from day care. He should be about ready for afternoon mischief by now.

cheers
Peter

Airbatic,
You order the kit and have it shipped to work or a friends house. Then sneak it in the garage (or where ever) and when she notices, you just tell her she's not very observant. Its been there for years.

Peter,
The triangle stock you put on the firewall box is gonna get in the way of the cowl ring (made out of the 5/8"x2"x36" stock). I was going over that section last night cause I was almost gonna do what you did. The cowl rings have notches cutout for the four corners of the box. I cut out those pieces last night and dry fitted. I still plane on putting in some triangle stock but will have to wait until the cowl ring is done which also has to wait until the bottom forward section of the fuse and the belly pan is done. Clear as mud?

I cleared a workbench last night to start the wing this saturday. While the wing parts are drying I will finish up detail work on the fuse.

Ants, good description.<g>

Edwin,
yeah I figured it would get in the way but that ok hVE dREMEL CAN CUT. eITHER TRI STOCK OR THE cowl mount blocks - bloody cap locks

I was going to start clearing up some benches today but by the time we got back from the gold coast it was getting late and we have a DVD night planned on the home theatre so none of that tonight. Tomorrow is abig Warbirds meet at our club Field, only have my small Pica spit to fly but better then nothing. Big P51 isn't certified for flight yet so it has to stay in the garage muttering curses for a bit longer.

Mate mud is real clear, its when you are knee deep in it that you notice a smell and think BUGGER this isn't mud after all!!

wing is going to take me a while as I am toying with the idea of making up a dummy centre section to play with scale gear locations. As I can't finish that fuz right off for lack of a donk I might as well start the wing!

By the way if anyone is after a nice NEW OS twin I have a OS FT-240 twin for sale. Brand new, never run. Not made any more so rare as hens teeth. $1200AUD. no offers under.

cheers
Peter

Peter,

The pictures I've seen of the full scale P-47 razorback have an antenna mast and the antenna runs out of the top of the fuselage to the mast and then back to the tail. Did they do away with that on the later bubbletop models?

Craig,
not really sure on that.

As they would most likely be using the same radio freq band the AE cable length or wavelength will be the same, hence they would most likely route it in a similar way.

Freq being inverse to wavelength.

I've got a stack of books at home on the 47 so will have a looky and let you know.

By the way i have cleared off 2 workbenches and have the RHS wing plan on the table. Now I have to get my 1:72 3 views blown up to correct size to use as an overlay for for working out the scale location of the retracts.

will advise progress as I go.

cheers
Peter

had a look in my books.

P47D-40-RA had a vertical mast just in front of but offset slightly to the RHS from the dorsal fin - this was most likely a short range VHF band radio and also had a long wire type HF cable from just behind vertical mast up to fin.

If you look at P51Ds the arrangement is pretty much the same.

Wish I had a scanner as I could then post the pics.

cheers
Peter

Well I finally got my enlarged 3 views organsied and signed off on the proof print. Once done they will be the same size as the plans. One thing I have noticed though is how small the supplied canopy is compared to the actual scale size. It is at least 25% smaller.

This will make detailing panel lines and panels dead easy - just lay the print over the wing and mark them out.

don't suppose anyone knows of an after market canopy in the correct size do they?

cheers
Peter

I've heard others use the Yellow canopy. But when I checked, it was $80. I'll pass if its really that much. I just cant believe a canopy costs that much. Maybe I'll ask again and see if I get a different answere. Gonna be cutting out the retract doublers for my spring air gear tonight. We'll see if I can have the wing framed up by the end of the weekend.

yellow? there's is only 80" span so would have thought the canopy too small - and for $80!!

Aerotech also have one but not sure how much or if it is closer in scale size or not.

Will start a thread just on that topic and see how it goes.

good luck with those doublers.

I'm stalled till I get those 3 view enlargements next Tues as I want to mark on the plans the correct retract locations before starting wing build.

cheers

Thanks, Peter.

I'm building the razorback version, so I had just about decided to run the antenna out through the top of the fuse and back to the tail. It looks like this could be done with the bubbletop version also.

ok so now my son comes in half way through typing this, grabs the mouse,m clickety ckick and 20 mins of typing down the drain Needless to say he heard how loud my voice can get!

Now as I was trying to say . . .

Have made progress on the planning for the correct location of the retracts.

Series of pics attached shows the correct location of the wheel wells and retracts including the hinging postion.

Also show is the location for the 6" main wheel - yes 6 inch, scale worked out to be 6.25" according to the 3 views so 6 is a nice compromise.

I have drawn on the location of the 2 subspars, these will use exactly the same contruction as the main spar including the use of ply dihedral braces to set correct angle and reinforce the spars.

Wing halves will be built up according to the instructions till they are ready for joining - not sheeted of course.

Then I will mark the location on the ribs for the subspars and cut out the notches.
Ribs 5 and 6 will most likely be cut away at the retract location and reset at the correct angle for the retracts - this will be trial and error till I get it all right, especially the rake angles in 2 axis..

Once I am happy with this the rails will be glued in, reinforced as required and then a trial fit of the retracts and wheels to ensure all is good- wheel well area will be cut out of the ribs prior to this.

Now the subspars are fitted in and glued and halves are ready for joining. all the rest is per instructions mainly.

Let me know what you think.

cheers
Peter

Hi Peter,
I am building the razorback version of the P47 - questions - what is the best filler to use to fill in sheeting cracks and low spots? what do you think of Ultra Coating of this plane? what do you think of a ZDZ 60 for this plane or a Fuji 64?
Thanks - John
