Pete, I'm in the process of testing some things right now for raised surfaces, and tried something last night that I think has some promise. Cut the shape out of construction paper or a grocery bag. Add as many layers as you need to get the depth you want. Laminate the layers together with thin CA and then attach them to the surface by wicking the same. Saturate with CA as needed from the top to harden. Brush the surface with 220 grit. Sands like hardwood.

Give it a try on a test panel and let me know what you think.

Tom

Keep up the good work fellows. I just love p47s. I have recently finished and flown my Ziroli 1/7 jug, its just fine. It has now had 16 flights and i cant wait for the next, they are superb flying designs. Ive fell in love with these so much that i have just orederd the 92" version to start this coming winter. I will make a short thread and will often refer to this one due to all the input from everyone.

All the best and i wish you all well,

Great pcs of your P-47

Been plugging away on the dummy engine. I did not do any cylinders, but have added the push rods that still need to be painted. I plan on adding the electrical ring which should add more depth. The prop is also just about done, few more touch ups to go.

Richard mentioned Flitemetal earlier and I do use that a bit. I think this construction paper technique is interesting where you want to build things up a bit more or where you want to have a bit more ability to round the edges as if you were to simulate a rib under a cloth surface. Not too interesting for your jug.

Tom,
any technique is worth pursuing, some work in certain applications, and vice versa.

The other thing to do is to use flexible narrow tape for complex curves, normail width tape for straight edges then use spray filler / primer to build it up. Sands very easily and builds up depth with a few waves of the wrist.

cheers
Peter

I get the spray part, but I'm a moron when it comes to "wet work" and would like to use solids wherever possible. I liked how you did your raised panels on the stab. I'll probably tinker with both the red putty and the blue ultracoat stuff I sent you a bit of earlier for those parts. It's really true that when the plane is sheeted and glassed that you are about halfway finished.

he has got the tail feathers sorted for it, got some internal work done prior to mating the halves. He got sidetracked building a niuport 17 which he has just completed. He is currently in hospital and expected out tomorrow. I have told him he is under strict instructions to get back into the Spitty!!

He has actually done quite a bit of the fiddly work, wing saddle, wing bolt mounts etc, firewall.
