one more

Peter_OZ -> RE: TF GS P47 Build - yeah another bloody one!! (2/10/2005 8:54:36 AM)

ok here are a couple of pics of what I have in mind for the subspars. at this stage it is conceptual. Still debating on if 2 sub spars are required or not.

Have a look and if you have any questions give me a yell.

cheers
Peter

p.s stole the pics from adsala's p47 build thread then drew all over them - sorry mate [sm=wink.gif]

Peter_OZ -> RE: TF GS P47 Build - yeah another bloody one!! (2/12/2005 5:47:53 AM)

more progress - well if you call filling and sanding progress then it is. Hate sanding but required evil.

Sanded off high spots and filled in sheet seams then sanded back again and went over them sideways with the bar sander then fill again. Labourious job. Started putting fillet in between fin and stab.

Dorsal fin is on and mostly sanded to shape. Applied filler to the fillet area of dorsal fin. Note I will put on a thin layer to replicate the dorsal fin sheeting after glassing.

So now waiting on more filler to dry then back to sanding. Might get onto the the intercooler doors tomorrow.

cheers
Peter

Peter_OZ -> RE: TF GS P47 Build - yeah another bloody one!! (2/20/2005 7:37:22 AM)

Been slack, not a lot of progress to look at since last post except to say that all the sanding and filling of the sheeted area is now done. This includes all the stab and fin fillets including those on the dorsal fin.

I have one of the intercooler doors completed and just waiting on a bit of filler to set so I can smooth it in.

Next the other intercooler door then on to the engine mount. Bloody fiddly things those doors but first one is coming along nicely.

Don't have the G62 yet but a friend of mine has a trashed one I can have to use for mounting, C0fG etc. Just can't run it! [:@]

Catch you later.
cheers
Peter

Peter_OZ -> RE: TF GS P47 Build - yeah another bloody one!! (2/20/2005 7:47:42 AM)

Hmm just took the canopy out of it's little box and say it on the fuz - it does look a tad small and not as high as it should.

Wonder if there are any after market ones out there in the correct size for this kit? anyone know? Aerotech said their one fits but I'd like to know for sure before parting with any readies ( readies = $$$).[sm=greedy.gif]

I could always get their canopy and the sliding kit, pylons, bombs and chin inlet divider - shhh don't tell her indoors who controls the budget. [sm=wink.gif][X(] She controls it, I just spend it!! [:D]
cheers

Edwin -> RE: TF GS P47 Build - yeah another bloody one!! (2/20/2005 6:10:22 PM)

Peter,
I'm almost caught up with you. Got back on mine last week. That double spar looks interesting. You think it might be a good idea to extend that rear spar another 2 bays to create a better box support for the retract hinge point? Just a thought. I like your idea there. I have heard the Yellow canopy is a good substitute for the TF bubble. But last time I checked it was $80. Not interested at that price. Hadnt heard about the Aerotech canopy. My plans are to enter mine in sport scale at the next local scale masters qualifier just to get my feet wet. I want this one to be an everyday flier, so I wont go TOO overboard. But it would be nice to experiment a little. Will also make my own retracts for this one. Bought a lathe and mill last year and this is a good first project for it.
Edwin

Peter_OZ -> RE: TF GS P47 Build - yeah another bloody one!! (2/20/2005 10:25:00 PM)

Hi Edwin,
glad to see you are back at it.

Still not finished with designing the the subspars and won't be till the fuz is off the bench and I can lay out the plans and work things out properly. At this stage they are all just concepts running around in my head like a pack of mongrol dogs[:-]

first I need to do though is get my 3 views plown up to the correct size. I did work it out and it is about 1:5.5 ish. Exact numbers are scribled on the 3 views at home. Once I have these 3 views blown up I can then overlay them on the plans to get exact locations for the retracts and wheel well. Lets hope Topflite were close to scale in the wing outline or else I'm gunna scream!! [X(]

always wanted to learn how to use a lathe and mill. Played with them in highschool but that was many moons ago. Maybe when I'm totally bored with nothing better to do I'll do a night course at TAFE. Yeah right - free time?

Anyway good luck with those retracts and hopefully soon I'll be posting some wing pics and design stuff on here.

cheers
Peter

Canuck1 -> RE: TF GS P47 Build - yeah another bloody one!! (2/26/2005 7:01:16 AM)

Hi guys, hope you don't mind me joining your thread.
I am finaly getting back to my P-47. It has been sitting in my basement 1/2 built for about two years. I keep getting distracted with other projects, 3 to be exact. Now it is time to get her done. I will post pics as I progress. To date the top of the fuse is built. Top of wings are complete. I am now just playing with the retract area. I have glassed it, added some ribs to the inside of the wheel wells. Painting it is next followed by all the other little details.

Craig.

Peter_OZ -> RE: TF GS P47 Build - yeah another bloody one!! (2/26/2005 8:40:35 AM)

G'day Craig,
welcome aboard. Your 47 is coming along nicely. I like the idea of the little ribs in the wheel wells, I way toying with doing something similar but using that plastic stuff you get in the hobby shops. all sorts of sizes and shapes so it should be good for that kind of detail.

I know NEO did similar things with that SBD of his that won all the awards.

Anyway been slack as usual so not much to report. One intercooler door is finished and the bits cut ready for the other side. Filling and sanding completed as it the dorsal fin.

Hope to get motivated tomorrow.

cheers
Peter

Canuck1 -> RE: TF GS P47 Build - yeah another bloody one!! (2/26/2005 2:55:18 PM)

Peter
Yours is looking good. I was debating whether or not I should do the intercooling doors as well. I think I will after looking at yours. It will add to the detailing, and it is easier to do it now instead of later.

Craig

Canuck1 -> RE: TF GS P47 Build - yeah another bloody one!! (2/26/2005 4:29:51 PM)

Question for you guys, probably the first of many.

I am about to install the balsa blocks on the trailing edge for the flaps. There has been plenty of guys who have installed these wrong and have had to go back into the wing to fix the problem. I have been playing around trying to find the best way that they go in. Keeping in mind that the bottom needs to be aligned with the bottom sheeting, I am not to sure of how it fits in. I have attached a pic of the only way that seems feasable, however there is a gap from the top of the block to the top sheeting. Filler pieces could be added to get rid of the space for a good mount.
Hope you guys can help me out.

Craig.

Kirk RC -> RE: TF GS P47 Build - yeah another bloody one!! (2/27/2005 4:40:47 AM)

craig,
I had the same issue. Make the blocks another 1/2" deep, towards the LE, and flush as possible with the bottom rib curve..
Hopr that helps,
Kirk

Canuck1 -> RE: TF GS P47 Build - yeah another bloody one!! (2/27/2005 3:22:37 PM)

Kirk
Just to be clear, the block should be another 1/2 in in length from the trailing edge forward to the spar?
Painted the inside of the wheel wells. Turned out well.

Craig

Peter_OZ -> RE: TF GS P47 Build - yeah another bloody one!! (2/27/2005 11:33:14 PM)

Craig,
can't help you on the flap question as I haven't started on the wing yet so not real familiar with it's workings. I still need to look at some full size photos yet as I have it in the back of mind that the flaps may retract under a shroad on the trailing edge of the wing.

As for those blacos if you can picture the setup from a sideways perceptive it will help you visualise what you need to do. I quite often do little scetches form different angles till I understand exactly what it is I need to do.

Gr8 on the intercooler doors. They are fiddly but like you said will add to the realisim.

Got the other side nearly done last night. Just have to blend it in then add a bit of filler here and there and reblend. Oh I hate sanding [:@]

I took some photos of my steps during the build of these doors. As you can see first one is the actual marking out. When you do this take note that you will prob still need to trim a bit fwd when you fit the actual door.

Next shows the bits cut ready to install.

Section cut out ready for install of the door parts. Take care here as it is easy to split the sheeting.

Bottom of the door in and the sides in.

Did anyone have enough ABS to make all the parts? If so you are a bloody genius. I ended up cutting the doors out of some of the cowl material as shown.

Keep us posted on progress

cheers
Peter

Kirk RC -> RE: TF GS P47 Build - yeah another bloody one!! (2/28/2005 6:53:35 AM)

Craig,
Thats correct, When you hinge the flaps the angle of the Robart hinge points is such that they just barely hit (or can miss) the hinge blocks and thats using the supplied angle gauge. Another .25-.5 inch will allow the hinge point to be fully anchored into the blocks. To do this you will need to cut new blocks or add a piece to each. Hope that makes sense. Dont worry that the blocks wont flush up with the top wing sheeting. Just make sure they are well glued to the TE and the bottom sheeting. I used wood glue on them and let it set up over night. The flaps take time to get right , and you must sand all the contours correct but they work real smooth!!
Good luck,
Kirk

Canuck1 -> RE: TF GS P47 Build - yeah another bloody one!! (3/1/2005 1:11:10 AM)

Thanks for all the info guys. This plane is a nice size. Who ever said that size doesn't matter.
I glued the wing halves together last night. Took me forever to get the fit right for the wing joiner at the spar. Lots and lots of sanding, but it sure is a good tight fit.

Craig.

Kirk RC -> RE: TF GS P47 Build - yeah another bloody one!! (3/1/2005 4:40:39 AM)

Craig,
Here ya on the wing joiner. I had the same issue. The good news is I have a belt sander [:D]. Watch how large the plane grows as you get past the half way mark!!
Keep on building, no one will ask if its an ARF thats for sure.
Kirk

Peter_OZ -> RE: TF GS P47 Build - yeah another bloody one!! (3/1/2005 4:45:05 AM)

I got a belt/disc sander combo too - looks like I'll need it!

Edwin -> RE: TF GS P47 Build - yeah another bloody one!! (3/1/2005 12:52:02 PM)

Peter,
You sure were right about the material for those intercooler doors. No way there is enough for that. Should have both the doors finished by tomarrow. The firewall was glued last night. Will test fit the G-62 tonight. Cant wait to start the wing. I noticed on yours you added the curved sections on the stabs and fin. I'll also be doing that. Nice touch.
Edwin

CraigM -> RE: TF GS P47 Build - yeah another bloody one!! (3/1/2005 7:55:09 PM)

Peter,

Like you, I found there wasn't enough of the ABS to make the intercooler doors. It was close, but no cigar! I sanded some of the cowl ABS to the right thickness and used it. That was a mess.

I'm attaching a picture of my project. I'm not making progress very fast, but here it is. Don't look too close.

Craig

Edwin -> RE: TF GS P47 Build - yeah another bloody one!! (3/1/2005 8:04:26 PM)

Craig,
I should be caught up with you by this weekend. Where do you fly at? I'll be flying mine at ARCA.
Edwin

Wounded -> RE: TF GS P47 Build - yeah another bloody one!! (3/2/2005 3:42:29 AM)

Craig what motor is that you have mounted.... Looks like a DA to me....?

Jeff

Peter_OZ -> RE: TF GS P47 Build - yeah another bloody one!! (3/2/2005 5:55:18 AM)

Craig,
looks good mate. What engine are you using. i'm using a G62 which is longer then the US41 so have to modify the mounts to suit correct overall length.

I'd like a DA but too pricey for me. I know a guy here who actually makes the electronic ingnitions for those DAs - he modifies G62s with it makes a big difference to the donk.

anyway it's train o'clock

cheers
Peter

Edwin -> RE: TF GS P47 Build - yeah another bloody one!! (3/2/2005 1:09:03 PM)

DAMN DAMN DAMN DAMN, (kick the work bench),( throw a wrench out the garage door). Sometimes things go too good, and THEN, you discover you got the firewall offset backwards. Had to walk away. Left thrust just wont work. Its an easy enough fix, I just cant figure how I did that when I paid attention to that very issue. I'll cut it off, flip it over and use ply doublers inside the box and hardwood triangle stock on the outside. And spend a LOT of time lining it up.
Edwin

I'm so ashamed!!!!

CraigM -> RE: TF GS P47 Build - yeah another bloody one!! (3/2/2005 7:40:22 PM)

Edwin,

I'm an HCAM member and fly at the Slaughter Lane site. That's a lot closer for me.

Peter, Wounded,

That's a DA50 engine. I wanted to go with the lighter weight and since the engine is shorter than the G62, it sits a little further forward, so maybe the balance will even out. We'll see. I may wish that I'd used the G62 before I'm done.

My standoffs from the firewall to the extended firewall are made up from the handle of a pool sweep with dowels inside. A friend had them on a plane that he no longer has, so he gave them to me.

Craig
