Chinook, I'll bum my nephews digital camera off him tomorrow and get some pics that hopefully will help show what was done. It really is simple. The new military scheme version seems to have alot more beefed up mounting rail area than the earlier Miss America so you might need to beef yours up internally as well, if it is one of the Miss Americas. Later, Maximus

    Capt G,

Which model of the SpringAir retracts are you using. Looks like you have a good installation on the MA. Some folks are using the 404's and some the 403's. Which would be better the 85 deg. or the 90 deg. retracts? Some are using Robart oleos, some are using Lykes Line oleos, and some are using Lyte Flite oleos. I am sooooo confuuuusssssed!

    Sam

If you look closely at Captain G's plane, which looks nice by the way, you will see that the struts are straight not offset with the wheels on the inside of the strut. This would work well as the wheels would go up in the wheelwells quite far. He probably used the 404 85 degree Springairs I'm guessing. I guess it depends on how scale you want to make a plane that starts out semi-scale. With the 404 retracts I could not see anyway possible to use the Robart offset struts. Tipping the 90 degree struts 5 degrees towards the center of the wing seemed to work. More coming.... Maximus

You're right - they are 90 degree gear with Lyte flight oleos. I had to replace the mounting rails and used 1/2" aircraft ply. I was not going for a scale look but for something very strong. These do the job.

Maximus, I am a bit condused. In your post you mention 571 struts from robart. At the robart site all I can find is 671R, and 671L struts under the "500 Series". Are these the correct struts?

Capt G, Do you have a web address for Lyte Flight or Lykes Line? I don't want to put this bird in jeopardy because of the week landing gear world models chose to include.
    TIA, Kevin

Guys, It is possible to use the robart oleos with the spring air retracts and still have the whole assembly fit flush with the wing. Look at the pics on my webpage for the miss america retract installation.

What's all the hubbub about the landing gear? I found that the new landing gear works fine. I even bounced it in a couple of times. They are a little wobbly, but plenty strong enough if you are not putting in an anvil (large gasser) on the front end. The only problem I found is that you need to close them before your going too fast so they will close all the way.

Thanks Maximus. I called Sheldons tonight and asked for the Robarts 671L & R and the guy said they never carried them and basically treated me like an idiot. I then asked him what he would suggest for this plane strut wise, I described it for him, and he knew that I had just ordered the Spring Airs from him, and the attitude got worse. Oh well, I am gonna call robart in the morning and order direct from them. Can't wait to get these installed. Gonna be a great long weekend of flying!

I know the guy you are talking about. There is a guy there with a real attitude problem. I had a run in with him as well. They do carry the struts because thats where mine came from. They were $36.95 each. The picture below has my fat digit pointing at the rib that needs to be removed. You can just see part of it down in by the cylinder. I removed it until there was a hole big enough for the air cylinder to slip into leaving as much as possible towards the bottom sheeting.I hope this works. Maximus Its late, more to follow tomorrow

Maximus, if you have an invoice or packing slip handy, how about reading me the part numbers of the struts so I can call the guy back. Also, what came with the retracts? The guys said all that I need was there, but after his lack of knowledge on the struts, not sure I trust him. I just need to make sure that the air canister, tubing, tees, filler valve, and actuator are included. I really do want to get this finished for this weekend. Not often that we get a 3 day weekend for some great flying!
