35cc Red Head gasser starting procedure

Maybe this will help with diagnosing my problem with "no pulling power on my take-offs" ???

my motor starts hard !!, with my motor on the stand or in the plane with the cowl on or off, with the smaller fuel line or larger fuel line, hot, warm or cool basically it starts the same way all the time,,, I have found the starting procedure (below) is the easiest way to start my motor, "but to me it seems like a lot of work to start it !!",,,

(keep in mind, that, on this carb the choke is linked to the throttle-linkage/arm, so to hold the choke closed I have to move my idle trim up a few 3 or 4 clicks,,, plus I have moved my throttle spring back on the throttle arm so there is only a very little bit of tension), the linkage all still works good,,, after the motor is warm (choke open) the motor will idle good when the trim knob is in the middle, around 1900 RPM,,,

procedure 1, priming ,,,
close choke, ignition off, flip prop AT THE VERY LEAST 30 times, (at this point if I flipped say only 25 times I will not see gas on the choke-butterfly and procedure 2 will need a lot more flipping !!,,,

procedure 2, popping the motor,,,
choke still closed, turn ignition on, flip prop 12~~14 times and then the motor will pop,,,

procedure 3, starting,,,
now open choke, ignition on, flip prop 12~~14 times and the motor will start,,,

(that is a total of 50~~55 flips)

even if my motor is warm and has been running for 5 or 10 minutes, if I stall it by lowering the idle it takes 10~~14 more flips to start it again !!

to me all this seems like a lot of work to start my MVVS, because my friends BME, 3W, Zenoah only need a total of 10 or 15 flips,,,

and in the summer at 75,80, 90 degrees my motor will NOT start and stay running with the choke closed, it will only pop to life for 1/2 a second and then stall, it has NEVER stayed running for any longer than that 1/2 second with the choke closed !!

if you need more info just ask what you need to know,,, others are welcome to PM or Email me about this if they want,,,

thank again for your time !!

Jim
Ps, I will not be able to fly my plane for a week or 2 because I need to do some work to a wing,,, but I can start it.

Jim,

A two-stroke model engine and for that matter, an engine for a weed whacker, chainsaw, back-pack duster, Etc. also need to be flipped over (with the start cord) with the choke closed, only until they pop.

After that, you open the choke fully and it will start.

Such an engine will rarely start with the choke. It is there to draw an initial amount of fuel.

I see nothing wrong with your technique.

Starting becomes easier as time is accumulated on the engine.

If you are sure there is something wrong, contact the dealer who sold the engine to you.
I have seen other gas modelers flipping their 3W and other make engines over many times before getting a first response.

well I found my problem !!,,, the carb is not pumping fuel !!

how I checked this,,,
I took a long clean clear fuel line, I fitted it to the pules nipple in the crank-case and put the other end in my mouth, as I flipped the prop I could feel the pules in my mouth, so I do know I have a pules to the carb,,,

next I fitted the clear fuel line to the pules nipple on the manifold, I pulsed the line with my mouth for a good 4,5 minuets and it did NOT pull fuel,,,

next I hooked the clear fuel line to the fuel take supply line to carb and it took hardly any sucking to pull fuel threw the line, so I know my fuel supply line to the carb is not plugged or leaking air !!

next I hooked all lines to the motor as they should be,, and I fliped the prop some 35 more times and still no fuel was pulled to the carb,,,

so now I know it has something to do with the diaphragm or carb !!

well, I think I fixed it,,, LOL,,, think,,, I have my fuse straped to it's stand, I fliped the prop 4 times and the motor popped to life, the plane and stand just jumped off the table, I had to put my hand up or the prop would have hit me in the lower stomach,,, 6 stitches and broke the tip of my finger,,, hey, but I think I got it fixed ,,,

stupid stupid stupid !!

Jim,

This is a warning! You got off cheaply this time.

Never run an engine, unless it is firmly connected to something that cannot just fly... unless it is meant to fly immediately.

A spinning prop can kill!!!

I am happy you overcame the problem. After you heal in six weeks, or so (....) you can fly your model...
