I had to buy a new OS 91 for my Byron F-16, I never broke in a D/F motor before. Whats to best way to break it in either on the bench or in the plane on the ground (with out overheating it,) since there is no airflow over the motor if the Jet isnt moving?

And if anyone is interested I got an incredible deal from TGA on the OS91 large head motor and the hurricane replacement fan.
$314.00 for the combo,, thats less than Tower Hobbies get for the motor alone..

Oh man, if that doesnt get you worked up, So far I have had a good experience with them, But I have not got my jet yet..Should be problem free from what I heard..

I put mine straight in the Jet, ran it a little rich, made sure it didnt get too hot. Ran it a bit then shut it off, it should have came with some instructions..

Hi Airspeed917,
I have run in 10 OS.91's-the first thing I do is disassemble the engine-make sure there is nothing in there that does not belong-then I clean it up real good with solvent-(carb cleaner and brake cleaner)-then I use red and blue Locktite on all the bolts EXCEPT the 6 cylinder head bolts-I use the Red L.T. on the front housing 4 bolts-Blue on the rear drum rotor housing 4 bolts-Red LT on the carb. throttle arm nut and the carb barrel retainer screw- Red LT on the 2 carb. mounting bolts.-then I dump in ATF to pre lube it. First run-I use Powermaster 15% and I add 8ozs. of Castor oil per gal.Open main NV approx.3 full turns-start it up-let it run rich for 1 min.-pinch the fuel line to lean it out some-do this 10 times-then go fly it-keeping it slightly rich all the time.I do the run in in the airplane with the fan on it.

The last time I assembled my 91DF, I used blue locktite on the 6 head bolts - 2 flights later, by head came off in the air and down came the jet!!

Now I use red loctite and check them before each flight!

Hey Wombat, Funny you should mention that, thats the reason why I'm having to break in this new motor. Three of the six bolts came out in flight,The three remaining couldnt take the compression and the head lifted up and the force of the motor firing was directed out the side and took a hunk of the crankcase out. Luckily I was coming up wind and was able to deadstick it in.
I'm going to red loktite the s**t out of this one.

Hi Pilots,

the only reason I don't recomend using any Locktite on the headbolts is because when I used it in the past on Rossi.81's and OS.77's ,the heat cycles of running the engine(s) would really lock them in the crankcase so tight that they would strip the hex head out of the bolt or they would twist off. Then you would have to use a EDM to get them out.I have found that if I properly torque them in even steps-they NEVER come loose anymore. And I clean the threads on the bolts and crankcase with brake cleaner. Hope this helps.
