Mr. Robinson,

I have close to 75 vintage engines. A lot of them are Veco and K&B's. I like to indicate as close as I can when the engine was built on the bottom of each box. I have been impressed with you knowledge of engines in general and especially the Veco/K&B's. Could you furnish us with a history lesson on the Veco & K&B's along with approximate years various sizes/models were built. I'm sure there are a lot of other people out there that would be interested in this.

If you can't do this, would you know where we might find this info?

Thanks in advance,

Richard

PS: I'm still looking for a drive washer for a Veco 29.

I own 9 K&B .65 Sportsters.
My first one, which I still use, I bought used in the early 90's I think. it's been in a Super Hots every since.
When they stopped making them I got several more to "put up".

Up untill I took a break from the hobby to raise my boys I ran them on Byrons 10%

Break them in for one tank (8oz) real rich and warble the throttle between idle and 1/4 throttle.
2nd tank lean a bit - 1/4 turn maybe (seems each engine has a personality of it's own so judge yourself) up the throttle a bit but still warble it.
3rd tank lean it out untill you get a nice 2 cycle sound at full throttle (dont leave it on full throttle for more than a few seconds at a time) then back off untill just starting to sound rich then about 1/8 to 1/4 turn more. Run this tank through while advancing your throttle from idle to full throttle then back to idle then to full then to idle and so on and so on.

after this tank you should be ready to fly.
keep the needle slightly rich for another tank or two while flying and for the next two tanks or so dont fly full throttle for an extended length of time.

Keep a listen to your motor, again each have thier own personalities and you'll know when to lean it or richen it out based on it's sound and idle.

I use this break in proceedure for all my new engines and have NEVER had a melt down or motor "let go" on me.

I'm still flying my original used 65 sportster.

Bill

ps. if you have one you dont want... let me know

Bill,

Don't have any Sportsters. All my K&B engines are vintage, 50's, 60's, and 70's.

Nice write up on break-in. I love engines and really hate to see people abuse them.

I lied. Just remembered that I do have a Sportster 45. Like new. Not sure its been broken in. Got it as a package deal with some older engines about 6 months ago. I'll sell it for $45.00 including shipping.

If it is one of the later bushed engines, I'll be glad to take it off your hands for your price of $45. The originals did not have a bushing in the crankcase - just bare, bored aluminum.

Ed,

Not familiar with Sportster engines. How can I tell without tearing the engine down?

My best guess (never had one apart before) would be to remove the prop drive thrust washer and look at the crankcase's bare front end. The Bushing should be apparent. I have no idea of how to remove this piece.

According to the MECOA web site, the early un-bushed cases had the "tall" finned heads as well, like the engine to the far right in W8YE's pics above.
They say that the tall head fins make it run too cool, so they changed the head design.

However...(isn't there usually a "however"? ) I recently got a NIB .65 Sportster with the low fins that in un-bushed? My guess is that they made a series of running changes as production continued, w/o stopping the line.

Here's a (fuzzy) shot of the front of a .45 Sportster. The drive washer has a machined flat and pulls right off. There is a black thrust washer that comes off next to expose the bushing (or lack of).

Thanks for checking. The only reason that the bushing really matters is because I was thinking of converting it to Diesel operation.
