it doesnt mention how it wants you to drive it. heres what it says:

When the engine starts, first allow it to operate in short
runs on its very rich starting settings, with the glowplug
battery still connected and with its driving wheels clear
of the ground. The rich mixture will, under these
conditions, provide adequate lubrication and cooling,
indicated by profuse smoke from the exhaust.
Next, disconnect the glowplug battery and try
running the car on the track. If the engine stalls,
open the throttle fractionally, but try to keep the
engine running as rich as possible: if it stops
because of being excessively over-rich, close the
Needle-Valve 30° and try again.
Run the car on the track until one tank of fuel has been
consumed, then close the Needle-Valve 30° and run
the car for another full tank of fuel.
Repeat this procedure until 5 more tanks of fuel have
been consumed, during which time the throttle may
be opened for brief bursts of increased power. If the
engine stops at medium speeds, close the Mixture
Screw 45-90°.

can someone tell me what it means by what it wants for the first run, "short runs at first" i have no clue what its talking about. same with "run the car on the track" how does it want me to drive it around each tank? punch the throttle constantly? gradually up to medium then later a high speed? run it around WOT? it could be VERY loosely interpreted! what is the correct thing to do?

Well, I'm breaking in mine (18 CVRX) as we speak, and I'm going with a tank of idling off the ground. I believe 'on-track' just means on the ground. Bunch of tanks at very slow speeds, occasional half throttle, keeping it smoking like a **** rich. Lean it 30 degrees after each tank...I believe that the break-in for this motor should be very similar to any other motor, just keep it rich, don't rev it hard, and slowly lean the mixture a tad at a time. After 5 or 6 tanks, could lean it more to make the smoke less overwhelming. Watch engine temps. Everyone has a different break in method, they all seem to work fine. Basically, as long as ur not driving it like you stole it, keeping it rich, and going through at least 5 tanks easy, you shouldn't have a problem.
PS, even at half throttle, you can see the power of this motor, can't wait to lean it out, cause it will absolutely scream when its tuned up.

if it was me, I'd just drive it for 10 tanks, each successive one being more leaner than the other and opening up the throttle more and more. I don't get this "idling" thing. Just drive the darn thing! You need heat to get that sleeve expanded as to minimize prematurely scuffing and wearing out the natural taper. I'd also recommend to drive in short intervals (finish a tank in 3-4 on/off cycles) to get that sleeve heat conditioned to expand and contract.

I broke in mine as recommended by the manual. I idled the first tank, which in hindsight probably wasn't the greatest way to gom but it seemed to work fine. For the next five tanks I drove the car at moderate speeds, leaning the needle 1/8 of a turn each tank and varying the engine speed. The seventh through tenth tanks I continued to lean the HSN with short bursts of full throttle while driving. My final HSN setting is about 1-1/4 turns out. I've ran a gallon through this engine in the last month and it has performed flawlessly. You'll be very, very happy once you lean out the needle.
