Hello,

I have the hanger 9 giant PT-19 with a Zenoah g23 on it,.....and like an idiot I had the wrong prop on it the first time and it crashed but with minimal damage. Well it's back now.

The first flight when it crashed i was using an 18 X 6 Classic nylon prop.

Then i was told right after it crashed to use a 16 X 8.....(gee thanks)

Well anyway, after all the repairs i managed to get it off the ground using a 16 X 8 nylon....but it seemed REALLY sluggish and tail heavy.....somewhat under powered. But then again the fuel mixture was pretty old, probably close to a year in fact, I'm quite sure that this had a LOT to do with the way it ran. But is it the WHOLE problem??...if I get the new fuel (which is what i should have done to start with), will that fix the problem??...I have had people tell me that the 16 X 8 prop is too small, so now what??

Any help would be very much appreciated

Thanks

I am running a 16x8 on mine. Does good now that it has several gallons of fuel thru it. Mine also felt very tail heavy balanced where the manual calls for, so I took all the weight I had added to the tail (even tho I mounted the servo's in the rear) and it does a lot better. Don't know the exact balance point.

So what you are saying is,...the 16 X 8 should be fine as far as a prop is concerned ?

The engine is fairly new, it's only had about 4 tankfuls (16oz) thru it, so I guess I should expect another gallon or so?

I will also take the 6 1/2 oz of lead out of the tail, I do have my servos mounted in the rear too.

Thanks very much for your input Ed , it helps a LOT.

Allen

I have been running a Zenoah G23 in a PICA YMF-3 WACO bipe and I could only get about 6800 to 6900 rpm with a 18x6 MAS prop. I switched to the 16x8 MAS and get 7900 to 8100 depending on the temperature. I use a 40:1 gas il ratio. I wanted to use the bigger diam prop because it looked better on a large cowled WACO, but it was really sluggish. I have a lighter weight wood 16x8 prop but to lazy to change over. I have had the 16x8 MAS on the plane since late last year and all this year. I guess I have run 7 to 10 gallons of gas through the G23 but I have never noticed a rpm increase due to runnin-in or breaking-in. Going from 32:1 to 40+:1 gas ratio gave me my best performance kick, in starting, idle, rpm and no residue running out the exhaust.

Tell me what oil ratio are you running?
I have noticed a big difference going from 32:1 to 90:1
I have a lot more power and a lot less fuel comsumption

Well right now I'm running 32:1 but I have heard of a lot of people running at least a 40:1 mix.

Using 32-1 I prefer using 15x8 and 16x6 props on mine turning over 9000 rpm usually peaking at 9500. IMO the newer G23 prefer running higher rpm , I did use 16X8 MAS props but only reached around 7500 rpm, although it flew the aircraft it lugged the engine in vertical flight , for plans like the PT19 or a CUB its probibly O.K. . I have disscussed this with many guys using the G23 in my area and we have all agreed that for best performance keep the RPM higher , 15X8 or 16X6 , for scale use whatever works best. As with any engine , performance is based on what you prefer and what aircraft is used and how you want it to be able to do. If you want a little better climb from your PT , try the 16X6 and let the little G23 rip, it will handle it just fine. The Heli guys use these and turn them around 10,000 rpm. Things sound like glow engines.

That's what I have on it right now,...a 16 X 6, well actually it's a 16 X 8....but I am willing to try a 16 X 6 to give the engine a few more rpm's.

thanks very much for everyone's help!!

I use Homelite Exact Mix 2 cycle premium oil for air cooled engines because that what I use in my lawn mower. I use 40:1 gas oil ratio. The Zenoah G23 instructions recommend to use a 18x6 prop or 16x8-10 combination pitch prop. I also use McCullugh Premium 2 cycle oil at 40:1. Both are cheap and high quality.

I've been using Lawn boy 32:1 ashless oil. Works great. It turns about 8200 RPM with an APC 16x8. The first prop Ii used was a MAS Classic 16x8 and it would hardly get off the ground.

The 16X8 I used was also a MAS and gave the same type results, I did not try an APC 16X8.

I have used the 16x8 MAS prop since last year and all this year (maybe 30 to 40 flights). The engine turns around 8000 rpm. It has a lot of pull and at $8.00 I will most likely run it a few years. After that I guess I'll use my 16x8 wood prop. I guess I'll see if I can borrow a 16x8 APC and see if this difference works on my WACO. I have never been all that satisfied with the power output of my G23/prop combo. We have a gas powered group generally gets together at our field on late Sunday afternoons.

It looks like the 16 X 8 is the general concensus here so I'm going to try that this weekend and see what happens.

Thanks guys very much for all your help!!!
