Hi
I was off for some time, but now, back to business

Here's picture of mine

More pics are here (it's my old site, so some pics are missing now...)
http://rc-kwidzyn.za.pl/en/dyna-deca-en.html

Btw, someone mentioned, that it will not hang on the prop.
Beside of fact, that it's not 3D model I can confirm, that with ZDZ40 I could hang it on prop
Well... ZDZ40 is much too strong for this model, but gives plenty of thrust for glider tow

Thanks for the PM and the info Marek. Glad to see you back in business. What is you next project? I have a GP 330L Giant scale kit and a Giant Scale SR 9 Topflight kit. Not sure what to do first. Also, the wife got me some plans from airagestore.com for Christmas that I have been wanting, A Giant Hots for a 60 or 70cc gas, Sport Star for perhaps a 30cc gas, and Dehavelon Beaver probably a 30cc unless I enlarge the plans.

Thanks Impulse, looks like I'll go out the lower right hand side of the firewall as seen from the pilot's seat.

Did some more work yesterday eve. on the plane.
I have some more pics, will post them later today when I get to my home computer.

Hope everyone had a good Christmas, Hanucah, etc., and New Years.

There is an old thread on the 330L. I noticed it has not been posted to since October of 2010. Maybe we could restart that thread when the time comes. I still like probably a month on this one.
Can't upload pics now because I'm on my KIndle pad. Will post a few more Decath pics later tonight.

Four more pics of my progress. I made an error on my fire wall bracing. I should have epoxied it about an 1/8 inch lower than I did. As a result I had to take a small dremel bit and cut away about an 1/8 inch off of the top. This is so the top of the fuel tank compartment can be glued in. Had a long day at work today so did not get out to the shop tonight. Probably won't make it out until Thursday or Friday night due to a work schedule.

Bill, I see you do the engine mount "my way" so far
Using alu plate helps with balance (heavier, and bigger than suggested by manufacturer engine too).

You have bigger openning at the center of firewall, so maybe you don't need the other one to run the cables from ignition module .

Just couple of additional tips:

I've added few additional longerons along the fuselage to make it look closer to the original and less "boxy"

The other one: If build it again, I would move the horizontal stab servos back to the tail to make pushrods as short as possible for better precission.

Marek,

Actually, it was your post on pages 4 and 10 of this thread that I copied. I initially had a different engine picked out because I thought I had a deal on it however, that did not work out. Since I have a ZDZ Super 80 on another plane and really like the response it has, and after seeing yours, I thought I would get a ZDZ40. If something happens to this plane that engine is about the right size to move around on other comparable planes.

Does adding the extra runners effect the fuse rigidity? That will take some of the surface adhesion away from the covering.
If you look back in my recent posts, you'll see I already installed the servo tray per plans. I did however, raise the center servo position so that I can use pull / pull on the rudder.

Well, in fact, covering didn't adhered to the whole construction anyway, so there was rather no difference. Ok, it was bit more tail heavy, but with our motors it's not a big issue.
As I remember, I saw this mod somewhere on this forum or rcgroups.

Had to change my fuel tank mounting holes slightly due to interference with landing gear bolts. Also, could not resist, stuck the engine and propeller on to see what it would look like.

Also, have an issue with the exhaust and not sure what to do about it. Unless I can find a smaller muffler, I'm going to have to make a pretty drastic mod to the fire wall .

Sorry guys, I meant to show the fuel tank tray 1st, the engine with the prop 2nd, and the exhaust issue pics last. i got the pics out of sequence but, you see what is going on.

Found a muffler at Jtec and also found another one at TBB where the can was only 1.5 inches in diameter. The one that TBB sent me was almost 2 inches in diameter at the can. Although this larger can will be slightly quiter, it won't fit between my engine and firewall. I'll contact TBB tomorrow and see if they will take this one back and send me the one I need. The 1.5 inch is $24 higher in price so I'll have to pay the difference. If freight is too high, I may just order a Jtec and keep this one for use at a later time on a different air frame, or I'll sell it.

During the muffler fiasco, I noticed the vent on the carb was pointed foward which could cause performance issues if to much pressure enters through the bleed whole in the plate. I turned the plate 90 degrees which should take care of the possible issue. Also, in the last two pictures I posted the stab where I epoxied it on this evening.
Had company this weekend so I did not get a lot done.

When I did my Dynaflite SD, there was a similar issue with the muffler. I had planned (the operativbe word here is planned) on installing my Super Tigre 2500 with a Slimline inverted Pitts muffler, which also has a large can behind the cylinder.

Since it would have resulted in the same predicament which you are experiencing, I sketched it's location on the fuselage side view and then modified the firewall to suit. I made the firewall stepped, so that there was essentially a recess in the area of the can. That allowed the engine to sit correctly relative to the rest of the plane.

It's important to have the proper size muffler or else you will restirct and fry your engine. There's a whopping big difference between a 1.5" and a 2" diameter can.

It's a little late once you've gotten to your stage. However, for those not yet there, it's a good idea to get an idea in mind of how the whole thing will fit together before gluing any parts.

There is a similar isssue in the instructions with the suggested order of gluing the landing gear reinforcement plate and the bottom fuselage formers, stringers and covering. If the plate comes prior to the other stuff, you can clamp it in place for a perfect fit and joint. Otherwise, it won't work out as well.

All the best with your project. Don't forget to read the previous posts about the weak landing gear legs. If you don't, you'll find out in a big hurry on your first landing, if not taxi test.

Thanks do335a,

TBB has the 1.5 can exhaust for the ZDZ40. It is also equipped with a brace which really should be used on these type of mufflers. I saw the landing gear mod and planned to perform that mod. I'm not sure what size music wire was used. Was it 5/32 or 3/16?

Thanks

Worked on the Decath this afternoon. everything went well however, The struts are a little bit of a pain. The instructions say to drill 1/8 holes in the struts. This seems too loose for the threaded inserts. I tested on a piece of basswood prior to drilling the struts and found that drilling a 7/64 hole was much better. When inserting the threaded stud, turn the stud in 1/2 turn then back out a qtr turn followed by turning in a half turn again. Repeat until stud has 3/4 inch of thread exposed. Just like running a Thread Tap while threading a hole. If you try to screw the stud in all at once, you will run the risk of splitting out your strut. Installed the fin and the fuse top ribs. I installed the rudder and elevator to see how it looks, but did not glue them in. Will glue permanently after covering. Also, thought I would show everybody what I use to smooth out severe dings, cracks, and gouges. It works very well and is easy to sand. If I'm using transparent Ultracoat, then I use hobbico filler as it matches the wood better.

Still need to know what size music wire to use stregthen the landing gear. If anyone could help me out here I would appreciate it. I read back in the thread and saw how it was done but did not see... or I missed the music wire size.

Thanks,

Looking good, I also need to double check the landing gear mod. Are you using the supplied cowl and wheel pants, or did you order the fiberglass ones?

I got my motor mounted, and the leading edge and wing tips glued one, and rough shaped.

Ed,

I plan to use the supplied cowl. I won't be installing any wheel pants as I am installing oversize tires and I fly off grass. Man those wing tips are rough aren't they.

Yes the balsa is pretty hard and heavy, I actually took one of the blocks, and cut in half on my table saw. And used the smaller pieces for the tip blocks. It will change the look a little, but I don' plan on competing it. I just didn't want to put such a large heavy block on each tip

Having trouble uploading photos. will try again in a few minutes.

Have tried several times to upload the pictures but keep getting errors from the rcuniverse server. Will try again later tonight.

Good morning WILDCRASHWILLY,

Same for all of us; unable to upload pictures since yesterday morning.
I guess not all servers have twin brothers (backup).

My computer here crashes regularly but then _ _ _ I did not build my computer.

I build my models and they do not crash _ _ _ if they do it is my fault not theirs  .

I am using dope today _ _ _ the type I apply on covering ...  .

All have a great day.

Zor

Well guys,

Got the new exhaust and it fit much better. Thanks to Bill at TBB for helping me switch them out. I bought the replacement and he let me send the one that was too large back for credit. Anyway, I still had to dremel out the bottome of the firewall a little and a little at the bottom of the fuse to clear the pipes. I'm glad I put the extra basswood at the bottom of the fuel tank compartment ( pics on post 1304... I think) this allowed me to grind away a little more material with out exposing the fuel tank cavity.

Also,

I completed covering the top of the fuse in the front. I used a little chopper tool that I purchased from Micro Mart years ago. It's pretty handy on 1/4 inch and smaller balsa sticks. I had waited until the engine fit was complete incase I had to do more mods in that area but all looks okay. I did drill a hole for the Tygon to pass through the firewall in an optimum place. I plan to get back on the struts today.

Nice work WILDCRASHWILLY.

Back to downstairs doing some doping on the flap and aileron of my Spectra under construction.

Yep _ _ _ I have good ventilation.

I am sure you enjoy building as much as I do.

Enjoy,

Zor

Zor,

Although I'm slow and not as good as most, I do enjoy building. Going out to the shop is a good getaway for me when home from work. I have never used the dope method. Not sure I would have the patience for it. I know I don't have the skill set for it.
What are you building?

Sorry Zor,

I reread your post and saw you're building a Spectra. Any pictures?

I'm on my Kindle pad now and sometimes miss things in addition to typing slow when I'm on it. It comes in handy for a quick check of the forum when I walk through the house.

Marek,

Are you still monitoring? If so, what size fuel tank did you use with your ZDZ 40? Also, did you perform the music wire mod on the landing gear? I don't know if it's 5/32 or 3/16.
