The TrueTurn had a center bolt that was 10-32 and was about 15mm too short, (you may have noticed that the center bolt is missing in the previous spinner pictures). I went by a Fastenol supply house today and picked up an M5 X 50mm X .8 TPM which fits the center shaft on the ZDZ engine perfectly. I hope to paint the first color, (white), on the cowl tomorrow night and follow up with the blue portion later in the week.

Tried to post four pics of the cowl which is now painted and some lettering for the sides of the fuse but I got the dreaded server 500 error again.

I plan to start a new build thread on a plans build in about two or three weeks. If RCU can't get the issues resolved I'll put those two threads over on FG. My Decath can be ready to fly in one day but some other obligations are going to take me away from it today and the rest of the week. I might get to work on it some Monday night and Friday night but, don't know for sure yet. If I get the chance to it will be flyable by Saturday, if not perhaps Sunday.

I'll try again in an hour, if no success. I won't be able to post pics until tomorrow night.

The first pic is of the new Dubro tire that failed while the plane has been sitting on the bench. The sidewall broke. Didn't try to get it warrantied for two reasons. One, I've had it for over a year so it is old stock although it has never been flown. The other reason is because I don't remember which of the two sources that I normally use that sold it to me. I replaced both wheels with 3.5 inch Dubro foam tires that have the rubber skin on them. Looks a lot better as the model seems to stand up better. The rest of the pics are of the painted cowl and the lettering I put on the sides of the fuse.

Normally no issues with the Dubro tires. I think statistics just caught up with me on one. Bound to get a bad one once in a while and this is my first bad one from Dubro... ever...

Status: offline 		On pg 10 step 13 it says to use the  3/32" x 4" x 24" balsa to make the sheer webs.. I don't have anything 4" wide, just 3" wide and that's not wide enough to fill from rib to rib like the pics show. Is it ok to just use the 3" and leave gaps on either side of the sheer web or do I need to fill from rib to rib?

I thought there was some 4 inch wide stuff in the kit. You may have been shorted a couple of pieces. Check your inventory sheet. If you don't, you can do either of two things.

(1) Run over to local hobby shop and pick up a couple 4 inch wide by 36 inch long sheets. I don't think one is enough to make all the webs.

OR
(2) You can edge glue a couple sheets with elmers or Tite bond wood glue. Then cut out the webs from that.

Unfortunately I don't remember which I did on this one. I've done it both ways over the years though. Both ways will be the same on strength.


TAKE CARE! the grain needs to be vertical on the wing for strength. If you cut them so that the grain is horizontal, the strength will suffer and you won't have the structural integrity you would the other way.

Double check your instructions, I think the first couple from the root have lite ply for additional strength at the tube.

Status: offline 		I have yet to start on my build, for a couple reasons. First, I received a terrible box of junk from Tower. Missing plans, manual, boken windscreen, damaged balsa and more. However...Tower did a GREAT JOB of making it right. They immediately sent a new kit OVERNIGHT.
The biggest reason I have for delaying is that I am a bit busy at this time (Pastor of a church) and I build "when I can" like most of you.
I also build custom furniture and have to clear a project before Christmas - hence the delay.
I had already downloaded the manual so I have that well read before I even ordered the kit!

SOON I shall be ready to start!

I do have definate mods that will be incorporated in mine. Those may be highlighted here, as I go along.
Does anyone else think the wing tube is too short? I plan for at least 36" tube in mine. Mainly because I will be modifying the wing root from original. This will have the wing seat incorported into the fuse, so the wings are plugged into the sides, and attached by screws INSIDE the fuse. A hatch door on top gives me access to the works, and also is how I load all those ping-pong balls or candy into the cargo hold.
The pic shows my Senior Telemaster with this mod. It was a bit trickier on the ST, as there is still some dihedral in my wing, so I planned the location of the wing tube in each wing rib that it passed thru. Very strong, stable mod. Unfortunately, it was lost in a mid-air as I was lined up to drop a parachuter, another plane came down in a steep dive and drove right thru it! Total loss. (except engine and electronics)

I say keep the builds coming as long as someone looks at the thread. I learn something from just about every build I watch, even if it's a different model than what I'm working on. Never too old to learn new ideas or techniques.
The next few weeks I plan to plans build a couple 48" Hots planes. One to replace one I destroyed and another for a friend. I'm thinking of doing a build thread on them over on the scratch build forum. There have been build threads on them before but I learn a lot from everyone's input when doing a thread. There is not much to a Hots so it shouldn't take much time.

Probably by mid Jan. I hope to start my first design and build model. I have purchased a 55DLE gas that I want to draw plans around.

Status: offline 		I think the wing tube is long enough although ai always use the wing struts! I hope you do add dihedral 1 degree I believe. Make the wings look less droopy. The wing tube holes need to be moved down 3/32" (I believe it was, please recheck) each successive rib to get the 1 degree.

Your Decath looks great. I did not build the pants on mine. The two fields I use are grass and have historically been hard on wheel pants. I may go back and build them later this winter if I feel motivated but I hate to spend the time on them just to see them self destruction in 8 or 10 flights. I'm thinking about a mod placing aluminum on the inside to beef them up but, I really haven't thought it through adequately.

I built the Hot Hots right after it came out in the January issue of RCM a decade ago. It was fun to build, and it flew... WOW! I had an MVVS .45 "Red Head" with the pipe on mine. I still have the plans.
Enjoy building it.
Oh, BTW Guys, I am really considering getting my build table ready SOONER than I thought, and putting the Super Decathlon into motion. I have 3 tables to build on, so if I consolidate... Hmmmm.....

Status: offline 		Got the baffles built on the Decath this weekend. Also, balanced the spinner cone. I still have to make sure the spinner back is balanced and then balance the spinner and backplate as an assy. to insure a good balance. Pictures below are of the cowl baffle and procedure used to build it.

Status: offline 		Charged up the batteries lastnight. Next Saturday I'll run 10 or 15 oz of fuel through the engine and get it adjusted. Then I'll button up the cowl and be ready to fly if the weather permits.


BTW: I weighed the completed model and the weight came out at 17 lbs 3 ounces.
