Frost....

Thanks for your answer and going to the effort to explaine. I finally had a chance to try the car and engine at the Rose Bowl parking lot this morning. The Lot is clean but very smooth asphalt. Contributes to a lot of tire spin. Last night I changed the MIP shoes to leading edge and added the weights. Engagement comes early off idle, then a lot of wheel spin. Clutch bell did not get excessively hot but I contribute this to the slick asphalt surface so not a lot of strain on it.

I did not like the early engagement. So................. based on your advise, I am going to order the aluminum shoes today and run them in the trailing position.

I conclude from your explination, in this configuration, you get RPM off idle to be able to launch hard but not so much slip so as to overheat the clutch bell or have slippage after the clutch is supposed to lock up.

By the way, new .18 O.S. pulls like crazy and makes the RC10 act like it is on ice. Having more fun with this than any other truck or buggy I have so far.

Thanks again..... Will let everyone know how they work out for me too.

Dennis

FROST...

Upon your advise, I ordered the aluminum clutch shoes from http://www.ssrcracing.com/team-associated.html for my rc10gt.

This morning I installed them in the trailing positton. My set-up is as follows:

RC10 GT RTR
18 tooth clutch bell
Slipper clutch set tight
O.S. .18 engine with about 1/2 gallon of O'Donnels 25 percent thru it
Dirt Hawg tires in back and Road Hawg tires in front.
Aluminum Shoes in trailing position

The results. Absolutely perfect engagment. Lets the engine rev up a little to just get to the start of its power band when there is a smooth engagment that under power looks like about 6 feet.

Pull the throttle hard from the start and it is tire burning to the point of going out of control. Pull smoothly and a very fast and controlled drag race start. When car is rolling about 20 mph, a quick pull (about 2/3) on the throttle brings the front end up about 30 degrees if you let off some right away. Pull any more and you get an 80 degree wheelie.

So, it is very easy to start at about 20 mph and pull a series of 30 degree wheelies going down the road, maybe 4 or 5 of them.

I made a series of full speed starts one right after the other and then one full speed run and pulled the car in. Pulled the body and immediately put my finger on the clutch bell. It was warm but by no means hot. Way cooler then ever before.

Last........you were right. Very good investment . Took about 1 week to get.

Thanks

Dennis

UPDATE!!!

I got the following email today:

Hello xxxxxx,

The clutch shoes you are currently running may be made of 7075-T6 material....... There has been a mistake of the kind of material used. 7068-T6 is the harder material we have switched and you will be recieving another pair of clutch shoes of the correct material, at no charge what so ever!
The 7075-T6 clutch shoes will work fine for a while but tend to wear a little to quick for our standards, so use them till they puke, then replace them with the new shoes which will be going out the door today!! You will recieve them sometime this week!

Along the way, I have pulled my CB to check on the shoes 4 or 5 times and the shoes show NO SERIOUS WEAR AT ALL... So I guess that mine were good from the beginning (or either their standards are SERIOUSLY HIGH) and I will be getting a nice free setup!! How many places would do this for their customers?

I can't stress this enough, and I don't care whether you are running a monster engine or not, if you have a GT you HAVE TO GET THIS SETUP. It will absolutely not disappoint...

HOLY COW!!!! Talk about not slipping... at all! I tried the "low RPM" engagement and was a bit abrupt.. engine didn't get a chance to wind up at all, then did the "standard" install with no weights.. perfect. I have the RR 16t clutch and 66t spur on it also. I had the stiffest springs (red) on the back and was wheelieing like crazy. Thought it wasn't transferring any weight, was just pivoting on the rear wheels, so I put med (blue) springs on.. yeah, uhhh, still a wheelie machine... LOL

Can't reccommend this clutch setup with any more enthusiasm... awesome.

All in all, a fun night to wrench on the car. Installed some RR stuff, some RPM stuff, some SS stuff...... I love this hobby.
