Hi

Just got the offer on a yellow Spitfire kit, well priced and I need to know the best engine to use that will allow it to have good power, not overheat and hopefully remain within the cowl.

A ST3000 has been suggested as well as a Moki 1.08.

Should I go petrol ????

Any thoughts please.

BTW - This is my first warbird, been a bit undecided as to the size of the model and feel this is about right. What do you guys think ????

Lee, good choice in a warbird. I have two of the Yellow Spits and am using 3-W 60i's for power. They are about the right weight and size for the application. These engines have the rear carb and make for a clean installation. Only a very little of the head fins will protrude from the bottom of the cowl. Cooling does not seem to be a concern, but the Johnson muffler needs a lot of refabrication to be used, maybe a different muffler company makes an easier to modify muffler for this plane?? These engines provide LOTS of power for this plane, some say this is too much engine for this application but my answer to this statement is, the plane needs the weight in the front anyway so why not utilize an engine with more power than an engine with lesser power along with pounds of usless lead. The extra power may be needed at some point in the models life. I do not fly glow fuel any longer due to costs of fuel, plugs, etc, also the reliability of the gassers is a factor. Good luck and happy flying to you. Les

If you want a cleaner line go with the Moki 1.8/2.1 keep the tail light as possible then you won't need to add too much dead weight in the nose. Keep all your servo's in front of CG. IMHO, you won't need any more than a 50cc gas engine to fly this plane... but that depends on how fast you want to fly it.

Ray, is that a SuperTigre 4500? The reason I ask is that I recently acquired a DynaFlite Spitfire kit and now I have run across a good deal on a SuperTigre 4500 and I have been wondering if that might be a little bit much.

I know a lot of people have used the 2500 and 3000, but heck--they didn't make the 4500 back when this kit was out...

Go with a big heavy gasser. Its lots better than putting useless lead up front. I would reccomend the 3w also plus the zdz is a good alternative.

Lee, try here:

Ask for Gerhardt and ask him where they are available in the UK. He should know.

Here is a picture of my Yellow Spitfire landing (Taken this morning, in fact). I put a G62 ( and it still needed some lead) in it 2 years ago and never had a regret. Great running engine - Great flying Spitfire!

Got a Quadra 52 in mine, and like no guts-no glory there, I had to add 1 1/2 pounds of lead in the nose. I have a fixed tailwheel. That said...I have owned 3 of these and they fly great...I love 'em. LAtest plane has been flying for 8 years now.

Noguts_NoGlory,

Any chance you could post a closeup picture of your g62 installation in the Yellow spitfire? I am on the verge of ordering this kit and looking for engine options.
