Dave, Ive never used anything other than the old telephone batteries 2 1/2" dia 8" tall 1 1/2volts. They allways give reliable starts and last ok for there price.

I`ve never seen, or heard ,of a battery like that,before..It sounds like a really big "D" Cell.I don`t know ,if they sell anything like that around here ,Stewart. At the moment, that glow driver ,is on the charger, and I`ve got, a brand new, pair of,D cells wired up so ,something`s going to work tomorrow.Temp is supposed to go to -22'C tonight,so I`m hoping to see,by lunch time, the same kind of day we had here today..I like 0'C,there`s no insects(mosquitoes), flying around, and biting at that Temp.

..Good News,(GN) Bad news,(BN) ;

.GN:Got the engine running ,today
.BN:It ran, So,so
.GN;The LST trainer, can get airborne, in 15'
.BN;can be put, back on the ground ,in about, 15 more feet. .
.GN;It flies.
.BN;It didn`t fly, very far,and crashed.
.GN; It came down ,from only 6', to 8' height,with NO,Damage. .
.BN;The engine, just Quit,causing a, pre-mature, touch down,left wing tip first.
.GN;I started it again, and found the problem.
.BN;The fuel lines seem loose, and,I see bubbles, in the feed line@the Carb. They need attention, and, they`re only,a few weeks old
.GN;I have more line .
.BN;No video.
.GN;Might be able, to ,get my Neighbour, Betty, to work the Camera, for me tommorow..
.BN;I have to fix HER, Sewing Machine, First
.GN; Plane will ,Get Airborne ,with my aluminum skis, on it

BIPER; The Best,GOOD NEWS,is,I think this plane ,will be a Real CHAMPION.Good job on the design.. IT has,,Lots of power ,with the 0.074"on it, even though there`s a few bugs, to work out first.I haven`t played with any props except for the 7"x 4"..I`ve decided that, before, I try To go airborne with this plane, again, and risk Damage..I want to see it run, 2 more ,full Tanks,on the ground, taxiing, with out it missing a beat .I need to regain, Faith in it first. Then, the wing, will go back on.Hopefully ,I can do this tommorow..DAVE B.

That's funny about the sewing machine!

Good to hear it works and the skis work especially. I wonder if the norvel is being over-cooled in the winter canada air? Could that could be making the black stuff accumulate in the combustion chamber? Maybe on one of your ground-only runs you could try a smaller prop and somthing like aluminum foil around the head or something? I think I read of another Canadian on the forum who was having over-cooling problems in winter. I can't remember what he did about it though.. I sometimes think the revlite engines have too much fin area..

I did notice ,the engine cools down, pretty fast, once it shuts down, but you can`t touch it at first...I don`t now about the Black stuff though.I would think ,that it would be, from an over rich condition..With the temp. at 0'C, the needle would definately need to be richened ,as compared ,to the same engine, running the same Carb,in a 28'C temp.enviroment.If the engine was set, to run in 28'C,and peaked, to the very slightly rich side,Then brought to the 0'C environment ,it would be running lean, If, No adjustment was made. Its due to the colder air, packing more Oxygen molecules, per Cubic foot(denser) ,of air..Same sort of thing, if you go up in altitude,.The air is thinner, less oxygen ,the higher you go .You would need to Lean the needle to get a burnable air/fuel mix.You may be right though, Clint .I`m not sure, maybe that cylinder, is Chilled too much. And shrinking down, on the piston.Anyways, the next size smaller prop, I have on hand ,is a 6"x4"MAScrew.Maybe I`m lugging the engine to much with that,7"x4".I keep forgetting I have a tach,to check..I would be worried, that once the plane ,was in the Air, and the engine unloaded,it would over rev.Just, Not ,sure..At this point,I don`t want to change, too many things at once,or, I won`t be able to tell, what each change, is doing..I`m certain about ,the air bubbles, in the fuel line though, and ,I`ll start with that fix first.I`ll,SEE what happens after that, and, try to keep an open mind, at the same time.I`m just trying, to NOT ,get Frustrated, with this plane, and ,its`equipment.

Glad/sad to hear it Dave.

It's been my experience that the Norvels run better in cold weather, although I've rarely been out in anything less than 5°C. These engines do run cool and being able to touch the head shortly after shutting the engine off is not unusual; about the amount of time it takes to walk over and pick up a plane after running the tank dry.

What fuel tubing are you using?

Edit:
I looked back through the posts and now I remember that blue octopus attacking your fuel tank. Maybe the fuel line is a little too stiff.

It`s silicon line and real flexible.Anything hanging off those Copper tubes is Great planes fuel line, medium I think they called it,and fits pretty good, but, I bought a few feet, of bulk 1/2A line, I think thats what they called it. I might ,just change everything, to that smaller stuff . I Really wanted to use, the higher volume stuff, but ,if I`m going to have to chase problems, out it goes .What gets me, is ,the Medium line, and the copper tubes, are exactly what my 1/8 th size plane uses ,.I`ll investigate everything, and see exactly where the problem is.I`ll get it straightened out ,one way ,or another.

I think the 1/2A tubing is too small for the .074. Stick with the medium. I find the Dubro line a little stiff, so I use some thinner walled tubing.

How's the clunk? Is it moving freely, flipped or fallen off?

I`m sure, it will be something stupid .Pin hole maybe. Is the medium fuel line, what you use on your 0.074".THIS setup did work so,maybe that, taxiing crash,a few weeks back ,did something. As soon as, I finish fixing this Antique, Czechoslovakian, sewing machine, with No manual(read tomorrow).LoL.Had to stop for a bit ,NEED,, MORE ,,K.D..(kraft dinner)
