Hmm, a Norvel AX .40 might be a littel too much!

If it's an .074, I'd use something larger than a film tank. Hayes makes an excellent 2oz tank.

D Bronk- on the se5 thread I could tell that the norvel you bought is the .074. Great choice, - good way to make the kid's Dad have some competition on his hands when pushing the electric power idea.. To get the same performance with electric would cost much more, since it would require a brushless motor, which takes a brushless controller, and you may as well then use lipoly batteries, that are dangerous for kids to handle plus require a proper charger..

Taking lipo risks into account, the .074 seems to me easier cheaper and maybe even safer for kids than an equivelent ep. Probably not quieter or cleaner though!

Oh I'm sorry, i fell into the electric vs internal combustion rant trap, almost as bad as posting about mac vs windows!

If you've never used Norvel, I think you'll like it. They take a different kind of break-in but they are a sweet little engine. Good Choice!

YOU`RE right about the engine Clint ,0.074..got a 0.90 if you guy`s think this is to small I wanted to use the intended engine.I used to be in the elec. cars, and I just hated waiting for those batterys 10 min. drive, 15 min. charge .3 eager boys + 1 glow engine = constant flying,,REALLY don`t want to use my good radio system, but I will, for now.I think I won`t have too much trouble, talking my brother in law, into a new radio set for them, after he sees them running this. I`ll get him to buy that instead of that electric junk. .BESIDES ,I`ve got everything for glow engines.,so they can use mine untill they gather up their own equipment...Makes more sense to me!! Oppsie bought a 1 ounce tank.I kind of went spur of the moment with this..Is this engine still considered a 1/2A??? DAVE

I'm repairing a plane for a friend right now that has a brushless with the equivalent power of a Norvel .074. It cost him around $800 US with 2 LiPoly battery packs and ESC.

Technically anything over .05 is not 1/2A, but most people here consider .09 and under as being "1/2Aish".

Well,I`ve downloaded and printed the plans, last night.Put two of the sheets together to measure the width of the wing and I have to tell you ANDREW. It appears to be a perfect File, as far as dimensions go.I`ll need to trim an edge or two off each of the 8.5"x11" sheets, with a straight edge, and razor blade.Ideally, would be to take the file, to a print shop, that could print it all, on 1 sheet of paper.I tried to have it done in my nearby town, but the service is not available here. The trimming is a minor issue, since a person is about to build a flying model, and should not have any problem getting through this task..Today I won`t be doing much with this trainer aside from posting some pics, due to a maiden flight of my nephews S.E.5A.,Providing the weather co-operates with us.Thanks to those that ,"Jumped" for me the other day, when I decided to build this project.I had NO time that day, to, gather "INFO",and probably would not of been able to get ,a list of things "to buy" together in time....I have noticed now I`m missing some minor things and,may have to exchange some others(wheels, and possibly, the fuel tank).I think it would be good, to have a detailed list, of EVERYTHING necessary to complete this Trainer(a check list) right down to glue and etc.. Possibly a list that a person could e-mail to the LHS.and would be a complete kit waiting at the store, when they got there..IT could also be used by a person who wants to purchase supplies in "spurts", or "stages",so that things are not forgotten or missed, just check off things a you go.I`ll do this ,and then post my findings after completing the project..MEAN while I`ll do it pictorialy.. starting with this...or the other day, with the engine....D.B.

AH man,it`s RAINING at 45 degree angle again.MIGHT be working on this with the kids today,if it keeps up.. .. PICS of hardware...NEW PLANE=NEW hardware.. some things I have new on hand but not pictured..I suggest Not buying,LOW quality PARTS..it won`t pay, if failure happens, and results in destroying your plane. This is pics of the stuff I picked up..GOT the BEST products they had at the PLANE store. HAVE to see what BIPE thinks about steering, but got it anyways.. DAVE

It looks like you're off to a good start. I notice that you are buying .40 size parts; possibly because you LHS stocks Great Planes and they don't make anything for 1/2A. Du-Bro makes 1/2A parts including wheels and steerable nose gear. If you use the steerable nose gear you will probably need to mount the engine as high as possible and may even need to make the firewall deeper. You should add some tri-stock behind the firewall because the nose gear can create some torque on it. If you are creative you should be able to make the Dave Brown engine mount double as the holder for the steerable nose gear by drilling a hole vertically and holding it in place with wheel collars. You wont need the wing bolts as the wing is held on with elastics.

One thing I can't emphasize enough is to resist the urge to strenghthen anything. Weight is a killer.

Well back to that store I quess. What ERKS me Is ---I walked In there ,showed the plans, told them what I`m doing...The first thing on my, rough draft, TO GET LIST,,and the first thing that the " HIGHLY" EXPERIANCED EMPLOYEE , sets on the counter ,is the BIG MIG 0.074...HE KNOWS ,I`m putting a small powered "kit" together, and ALL the parts,,are for this plane only..ALL the EMPLOYEES and THE owner know me by name, and that I`m usually in to the larger planes..THEY know, I`m relying on their experiance,to set me up with the correct parts, for the build. They also KNOW how far, I live away from the store, and that I have to travel a long way, just, to do my buisness with them.I suppose this proves the importance of a parts list, with possible, suitable, alternatve parts as well as .KNOWING EXACTLY what you kneed
