Simple truth is, voltmeter readings and capacity testing, is really a pretty good system. People who use this system religiously almost never lose an airplane to battery failure.

If your wife cannot check and charge your batteries it is not simple enough. Only the top 15% at our club (elite flyers) have the knowledge, equipment and discipline to maintain batteries. The system is not people friendly.

Personally I continue to believe that the answer lies somewhere in the area of continuous battery monitoring.

The current system is awful because it does not serve 85% of those in the hobby. The current system is dangerous. I’m sorry to be so ornery but my tractors have better monitoring systems than model airplanes.

I am not new to this hobby.I have never heard of cycling a new battery in 20 plus years in this hobby. Peak charger is part of any flight box.

Is that your way of saying you did fast charge that pack?

Similar to Nogyro... I have 20 years flying R/C experience always cycle new packs and never fast charged a Tx or Rx pack.

If your doing that much flying that you need to charge your Rx battery to get more flying time maybe you should purchase higher mAh packs?

Thanks Bill.... I am not trying to antagonize (well...maybe a little My wife hates it!)

Just trying to learn safer procedures at the field.... I think we all forget sometimes how dangerous these airplanes can be.......

and again lino0-7, sorry about the plane....

BILLS,

If I am understanding the individual that lost his plane, he charged a brand new battery pack one time. He did not discharge it to check for capacity. He did not check the voltage before the second flight. These are three quick mistakes in my opinion.

A new battery pack should be charged and discharged for capacity check. Sometimes they have to go to full charge then full discharge 3 times to show full capacity. If there was a flaw in the battery pack, (bad cell, etc..), it would have been noticed.

If he had on board monitoring, chances are he would have seen the voltage dive, just before or just after the plane made it's dive.

I am sorry he lost his airplane. Many people use his system. Buy a new battery pack, fly it for a couple of seasons, then replace it. It's russian roulette. You may get by with this for many years, but it eventually bites you.

The only evidence he had of the capacity of the battery pack was the manufacturers specifications. A voltmeter reading is a great indication of the state of charge, but only if you know the batteries actual capacity, not manufacturers specs.

Hello to everyone, I am not a battery expert, but nicd batt havent change since the flinstone. Not even the futaba manual state to cycle a brand new pack before use. Maybe the others battery bendors have confidence on their workmanship and they dont provide instruction. This particular pack Idid not fast charged(first time in service). Ihave fast charged and who does not if the big guys in this hobby do it why not me. I dont go to the field to complaint about the wind speed and direction.I own a few models from fun fly,3D ,2m pattern to SA gas and when not in service there on trickle charge and have not lost one yet to a pack failure. I have lost models before doing things to close to terra firma or brain fart is only wood and paper. And yes learned a lesson . Buy the same old cheap packs=reliability. Later guys have

No one is putting you down. That's a wall full of fine lookin' airplanes. Think about purchasing an inexpensive system to test battery pack capacity. It could save one of those beauties from a early demise. Might save personal injury too.

I know there's a Sirius Super Test in the classfied section, and it's for sale cheap. They are about $69 new, don't remember what the guy is asking. Check it out.

Good luck,

It is simple to get something like the Accu-cycle from Hobbico and do your charging and cycling. I do know that my receiver and transmitter battery packs have about 60% capacity from the factory until I cycle them before using. Just bought a new Futaba 9C and the battery probably had about 45 minutes of life before cycling. Now, it is over 2 hours. I am using 4 battery packs and they are bumping the 2 hour capacity too when cycled about every 5 flights. Otherwise, you can see capacity drop significantly.
