Status: offline 		Covering should arrive today. Went ahead and painted the fields for the fuselage Crosses. And I covered al my strut fairings. I know it looks like I was just trying to get rid of left-over covering. But this is the scheme. I can appreciate the British calling them the Fying Circus!

you amaze me...that one built up fast eh?
love the color scheme............man it would be so cool if we all could get together and fly these kites at the same time.

one thing i love about this kit is how fast it builds...........i may build another one and keep it totally stock and try to lighten it up...........there was another build thread where the guy used a 120AX and came out around 12.5-13 lbs............must be a floater.

what are you using for paint on the Solartex?

Status: offline 		Summerwind, Krylon Fusion Satin. I did some test shots and it worked really nice. I remembered seeing a post where the builder painted the whole plane with Krylon and it looked great. The Blue on the Bottom is a little dark, but that was the lightest blue availible. I have debated streaking the green. I have seen some really nice DR1's with really lousy streak jobs. It would be great to get them in the air together. I am hoping to get both of mine in the sky at the same time for some pictures. I am looking forward to seeing some update pictures of your project.

Status: offline 		Summerwind, here are a couple of my planes that have the 1.20 AX in them. The Yak is about 11 lbs and the Ultimate is around 10lbs. The only problem with this engine on the BUSA DR1 would be building lite and then having to add weight for balance.

Status: offline 		Waldo, as hot as it is here I may have to come to New York for the maiden. I would enjoy flying off that green stuff called grass. At our field if you are Dead-Stick and short there are not many good options. You either hit a Cactus a lizard or a Rattlesnake. Oh yeah, there are lots of rocks to dodge as well. In the summer I arrive just as the Sun breaks over Superstition Mountain and its already 95 degrees. When it hits 105 we go home. The guy that took this picture of my Ultimate snap it just as I cleared the Barbwire fence and took the next picture before the dust cleared. No damage, just had to take the walk-of-shame.

We might have a nice short grass runway but we have corn and plenty of it 2 weeks ago a plane went down and it took us 1:45 to find it, Last week I had a plane go in and it took us 1:10 minutes to find it.

The corn is at that perfect height where its too high to see over it and too low to see under it.
Both planes went down because of no elevator control
I should be flying my DR-1 tomorrow so I'll post the vid if someone is there to film it for me. I love that plane. I hope the corn doesn't gobble it up LOL

this one is looking better and better..........love it!
just do the streaking in the right direction and i don't think you could do anything wrong in the process......especially with your talent.

love that early morning sunrise shot.......reminds me of the Free Flight competition days with my Dad when he was here. we use to be the first ones up in the morning......out here, Taft and Lost Hills got hot and if you weren't out in the early morning hours, you never got used to the heat............

Status: offline 		Painted the fields for the top Crosses.The only parts left to cover are the Ailerons. I used 4 meters of Cub Yellow Solartex, 3 meters of light blue and 4 meters of Olive Drab. If your using Solartex I recommend buying the 5 meter rolls because its about the same price as two 2 meter rolls. The light blue is not the correct color, not even close really. To do this scheme properly it would be better to paint it. This one is end-of-the-runway scale.


The picture of the Cub is the only airplane that I have completely painted. { actually I taped it off and Denis Winters shot the paint } We used fuel proof Nelson Paint and it was very heavy and very expensive. Almost $200.00 just in paint. { thats why I let Denis shoot it } I have had a few people that offered to purchase the plane and I told them they could not afford it. Now everybody is simply using house paint. Much cheaper at $10 a quart probably just as heavy.

Status: offline 		I found that covering the top surface first and cutting about 4 strips per in-dentation and wrapping them under worked best for me. Its time consuming. On this DR1 I wrapped the top wingtips separate to aviod the Pucker or crease It leaves a seam but is not as unsightly as a wrinkle in my opinion. I put the seam paralel with the top outboard cap-strip so its not to noticable.

The Crosses are Vinyl. I cut the 2 inch section for the Aileron off and covered the T.E. with black and white covering. I did this on my other DR1 and it finished the gap between the wing and Aileron nicely. When I glue my hinges I will aply the rest of the cross to insure they line-up.

Pitures and Documentaion of 454/17 showed it with both styles of Cross. I like the Maltese. When I build The GTM Dr1 I will paint it more true to scale. Glen told me the revised Kit should be availible around December. Guess I know what I want for Christmas.

we didn't find the need for slits though as Solartex will literally wrap around itself..........

Status: offline 		Radio,Ignition,Engine,Tank,Switches installed. I still have to cover and install the Ailerons. The ignition box on the firewall has room for lead weights if needed. This one has a tail wheel also due to our asphalt runways.
