Gotta hand it too you guys, that was one heck of a joke. At first I thought he was joking with me, and as time went on, he didn't change tone or looks, I was guessing I was in trouble. Next time I am just taxiing, that way I can't go over the posted speed limit. Kinda scary the way you guys informed and educated him on the AMA and such.

Good job and great times at the rally this year. Bryce, you is a camera shootin' fool. Good job on the pics.

Well, we pull up and wouldnt you know it......we see B's car in the parking lot.

Here are a few pics of the sleeping beauty. The first picture he has a little drool on the bottom of his lip, the next picture shows the plastic fork I put on top of his head to see how long it would stay on. It lasted 168 miles until we passed by a Panda Express and he woke up to the smell of flied lice.

Yeah I know you pilots keep a "Caddy" at every airport, and I know you wouldnt be trustin them spinners in no long term parking....Naaaa, I know you keep the good stuff in Fla, besides I heard through the grapevine that you had to return your last set of spinners on the count of they spun right off the Shark.
For those of you who dont know, Bryce has a corvette that's named "the shark" and he used to have spinners on it, but they werent rated for racing Beemers.

Dave and I had the grim and dirty task of finding the retrieving the wreckage....

Tam did a great job with making the Hornet very strong in the places that count... Notice how the front crumple zone worked exactly as designed Serriously, here are the pics as the plane lay untouched at crash site. Notice the spray of all the fuel over the rocks... it was everywhere... Also notice the gear down as a result of failsafe condition... Rember to always set your failsafe!!! No fire here!

Pic 1. Crash area Pic 2. Reverse Angle Pic 3. Point of impact Pic 4. Close up.

As you can see from the pics... the entire nose has been obliterated.... nothing to be found...

The hatch lived to fly another day as well as the wings(sort of), and all stabs....

Man what an event Bryce and Uncle Joe Thanks for the shots. The Rains lasted from Phoenix to Vegas time to build an Ark. Heck it snowed again out in the North West side of Vegas. I look forward to this rally each year and Bryce I hope you make back in 2005.

Hey Tom,

Due to my lack of efficient flying skill, nineteen successful flights with my Balsa Bandit were made in Tucson this past long weekend instead of Mesa. Excellent weather and only about four other jet pilots to occupy the airspace provided a lot of safe fun. The runway was widened by 25 feet on the north side and then the entire runway was sealcoated. There was absolutely no radio problems from freqs. 18 through 55!! The overruns received attention and any off road activities by long or short landings suffered no damage. A few scrub bushes and trees along the extended centerline were removed. TIMPA has made the flying sight a great place to fly.
There was no local Sheriff involvement checking for excessive airspeed!! Outback has added Lobster cakes to its menu and the "Chocolate Thunder from Down Under" topped off our tanks!!
Hope to see you there in March.
Skeet

Skeet,
There has been a steady decline of scale jets attending the AJR and it seems that this field with out overruns is not really working for the heavy iron type jets. Our Sun Valley Club field on north Phoenix has a 650ft runway with 300ft safe overruns on each end. Also a much friendlier desert scape for emergencys. Not taking anything away from the Tucson Modelplex but its time the AJR gets moved to a new site, we would love to host it. Any feed back from you jet guys is welcome.
V..

Vin, i agree. If i had "Heavy Metal" to fly, i wouldnt fly at the Mesa location. Not enough "forgiving space". Sounds like you have a good idea there for the SVF field to host it. Nick. If your field could handle my obese panther that i landed at 70+, it should handle anything!

It would be great to have it at another site. Although I had a great time meeting and making new friends, it did cost me a a new ROOKIE airframe and yellow scale nosegear. The Mesa site is brutal in LOCKOUT and flameout situations. All in all I came out much better than others as my engines and electronics were undamaged.

I am with you 100% Vin,

I love Az, (I went about 6 years in a row). It is a realtively easy drive from SoCal and I really like the Mesa area to stay in. THe guys running the event are top notch.

But that field is a mother even for sport turbines.

I hope you can do it without ruffling any feathers.

Tucson is Tucson, and I will go to that one too no matter what, beautiful surroundings, great CDs and facilities, great town.

Matt,

I know of 4 lockouts which all occurred in the same vicinity of the airfield on 3 different frequencies. They occurred in the same place Torrey had his loss a couple years ago. I just talked to a guy who was at the 1/8th scale fly-in last month and before I could tell him about the jet crashes he described 3 lockouts during that event in the same exact place. I'm wondering if that barbed wire fence running between the pilots and the planes could be acting as some sort of RF antenna?

In any case its time for you to get your new radio system going so we can avoid this kind of loss.

Joe

Yup, Vin, You Are Correct, Sir!

I think that the time has come for the Mesa dudes to share the love..............at least every other year or so. Otherwise, it's going to get down to just sport jets at the AJR....why risk anything else. I seemed to have mis-placed my recon photo of the Mesa field, so here is a picture from their web-site (on the left). Compare that with my pictures of the SVF field from 11,000' on the right. Those clear areas on each end of runway together are as long as the runway itself and are smooth enough to litterly land on them....or possibly take off from them with no issues...(as if you would do that). Don't get me wrong, the folks at the AJR are great and they run an excellent show, but the field is a little scary.

'Just my opinion......I could be wrong.

Tailwinds,

John

Here are couple Jets that Larry from Jet Hangar Hobbies had at the rally. I saw the Fury fly a few times and it looks like it is a blast with the little Wren MW44 on board. I think that Larry was lying to all of us when he said the thing weighed 12 1/2 lbs. "wet"....It flew and landed like it weighed more like 8 pounds! The F4D had a MW54 in it but it wasn't flown. The smaller jets were at home in Mesa.

Tailwinds,

John

For those of you who have flown at the Sun Vally Fliers Field you have personel experiance that it is an awsome user friendly site. Vastly open, plenty of run off on both sides, usaully wind is right down the run ways, sun is at your back, and the city of Scottsdale is a hop away. Plenty of family things to do for the Gals and kids, horse back riding 10 minutes away, movies, great resturants, spa's, art and old town scottsdale, shopping, indoor rock climing, ice skating, etc..etc. Let the guys fly and the family can play.

I actually had a slight fender bender with an orange fence at the end of the run way. It was the 3rd flight on my SU 27 twin mercs, after the shock of damage to the new plane, I had many people come up to me and say "should have landed sooner" well take a look back at the center photo taken by Bryce on page 2, it shows the SU at 2 1/2 feet above the run way almost dead center at the foot of the run way, and the next photo shows the plane at 1/2 field still at 2 1/2 feet above the pad, but now she be getting close to the end. The SU at 35 lbs is an incredable floater and this damage could have been avoided if there was just a slight run off. OK pilot error, I admit, but I decided not to fly my F18 should I also run long and lose brakes.

Lets start a new Jet meet at the Sun Valley field, and lets get the nice birds back in the air. I love sport jets, I just bought a new King Cat, but to go to a meet and see a hand full of detailed iron, and a container full of sport jets, what up.

As Vin said above, we would love to get some feed back, and perhaps a 1st week or 3rd week in May could work.

If we build it, will you come?????

Kevin Marks
