From the quemist point of view they are very similar. Did anyone tried to run his glow engine using ethanol-oil mixtures? anyone thinks it's a good idea to give it a try?
I have an old Enya 15-IV lying around and i'm tempted to try, but have some fear it might damage the engine.

It works best with ethanol.

I think homebrewer meant methanol

They may work with ethanol because I think (but don't know for certain) that it will still react with the platinum in the coil. But I can't see the point unless you have your own moonshine still

Ethanol is for drinking. Methanol is to die for (literally!!).

Ohhhhh....Enya 15....use 25% all castor.

I think ethanol will run fine. I have the impression that the energy content is lower than methanol. So far as the glowplug keeping lit, I recently read an old article on control line team racer fuels. They ran all kinds of weird stuff in glowplug engines in search of both speed and range. I'll make a separate post on the article as it is an interesting read.

It won't run on ethanol simply because there is gonna be no reaction between platinum and ethanol.
Methanol is what reacts And is to die for lol

The first Arden glow plugs were simple ni chrome elements, so platinum is helpfull but not absolutely necessary. Do a search on the engine conversion forum and you will find that some have run gas gas with glow plugs. You would have to experment with glow plug heat range. But unless you plan to run a still, methanol is a lot cheaper thanks to the tax. Even denatured ethanol costs more than methanol.

I dont know the ratio of ethanol: methanol, but i know ethanol: petrol, its 1:2! I.e it'll take u 2 lts of ethanol to produce the same power as 1 lt of petrol!

Ethanol may b expensive for now, but oil prices are climbing, if it continues, methanol will follow!

Methanol is made from natural gas, which is also rising.

Thats it, if the engineers there design rc running on ethanol, well it'll b very cheap here, we grow sugar cane and produce ethanol! We even export it!

Unfortunately ethanol can only be distilled to 96% after which it has to be chemically dried

Hi Jim Thomerson, did you publish the article about alternative fuels used by the old control line guys..? I may have missed it, if so please direct me...thanks.
The reason I ask is that I search for additives to replace nitro in 4S engines and would like to know more about it. Have a couple of Saitos running fine on 0% nitro with onboard glow but my RCV.60 beats me...it absolutely NEEDS 10% nitro to run well.
In particular I search for real experience with ethanol as additive in 4S but have found little so far. Apparently it works fine for 2S even as the sole fuel.
Have read much about acetone but in my hands it gives no advantage when I add up to 5%. Lead free gasoline is the same - no better.
