Once you tame down the throws it flys well. If I were to do another knowing what I know now I would take the spades off the elevator and rudder and attach them to the horizontal and vertical fins. Those two control surfaces were designed for 3D and don't need to be as effective as they are for pattern......just my $.02

    Pete,

I stayed up very late last night and got it finished. I'm heading out to the field right now to put a couple of quick flights on it, just to make sure I've got the balance right. I don't know if it is ready for competition, but there's only one way to find out!!

    See ya' Sat. morning,

    Ken

Y'all talked me into one. Tony at Radio South had one in stock that is now on the way to me. YS110, with the Icepoint canopy and LG. Hope it lives up to it's reputation.

Has anyone tried to install a gas engine in this plane, i am looking for a home for an RCS1.40, currently have a rear type pitts muffler for it but would consider using the krumscheid canister, any thoughts?

    Hey Gordi.

I have had mixed success with my Excelleron, but not because of the plane. When it flys, it flys just great. My problems have been with the engine. I tried, unsuccessfully, to buy a YS 110 last year (2005) but backordered, backordered, backordered etc.. so I stuck with my Evolution 100. I have been playing with this engine since I put it in this plane. Not fun at all, but I have had some tremendous help and some great suggestions from the Pattern folks here on RCU.

One gent, works for Iron Bay Models is actually sending me a regulator to try. I thought this was very thoughtful and typical of the response I have gotten from the pattern folks and I truly appreciate it.

Anyway, from what I hear from the people flying it with the YS-110, it flys great. Hey, I have no complaints with the plane when I can get the engine to run the same way for two consecutive flights.. the Evo 100 has great power and pulls this plane along just fine, for a beginner. Verticals are great, as are all the other Sportsman level maneuvers.

We'll see how this regulator works for fuel flow and maybe I can get this thing to finally perform for me. I am just about ready to order either a new OS 1.2 AX or a YS-110. Only problem is that with the YS-110, I have to change things around, throttle for instance, is set up for a two stroke (other side) so I woudl have to move a few things. A friend just bought that new OS 1.2 AX so I will see how that works out for him.

Meanwhile, at least in my humble opinion, you won't regret the Excelleron 90. As one suggested, though, converting the tail feathers to classic pattern style (without those huge overlapping counter-weights) would give you more resolution perhaps? I left mine stock, and have the throws set for the very minimal, moving the elevator, for instance, only about a half inch or so up and half inch or so down. The pull-pull system setup for both the rudder and elevator are interesting, but function very well.

Ok.. sorry for the lengthly dissertation..haha..

    DS.

Hi LT, I have an Excelleron 90 with a ST 2300 up front. My battery pack is just in front of the tail wheel skid support. If you cut a hatch in the bottom that is 11/16 in front of the forward end of the skid and extends to 5inches front of the skid, (hatch is 4and 11/16 long) and ΒΌ inch from the sides you will find a nice opening for your battery. I have a 4.8V 1200ma NiMH pack in that location and the plane balances at the 7-inch mark. Hope this helps.

Hi Tommy- I was going through some old threads on the Excelleron. Mine is done and I'm waiting for some good weather. Have a new YS 110. While setting the control throws I felt that aleron and elevator were quite high. I do fly pattern but am not as yet into 3D. While flying yours, what settings did you arrive at for normal pattern flying??I will run a 15-10 APC Using 30% morgan.
I went to larger lite wheel, with slightly larger pants as we fly off a turf farm (tall Grass) It balances fine at 7" just a little on the nose. I'm concerned with the amt. of throw, especially the aleron. Pete

Pete. I've just finished mine and while setting the control throws up I thought they were very high for normal pattern flying. I don't fly 3D. I have three boxers 60-120s. We don't use more than 3/8 aleron on that plane. 1 inch for normal pattern flying seems to be "BIG" any suggestions?? Pete P.

I'll measure the throws on mine at low rates which is where I fly anyway and post the results. Let me know if you want degrees or inches.

Do you want want the rudder throws as well.

    Pete

    Pete,
I have retired my Excelleron and am now flying a 2 meter OTOP but if my
memory serves me right I had no more than 3/8" up and down on the ailerons
and around the same, maybe just a hair more on the elevator, it doesn't take
much for pattern flying. Sorry I can't measure but it's hanging on the wall with
    no equipment in it now.

Pete, Thanks for getting back. Inches will work fine. Aleron and elevator are all I need.
    Thanks again Pete P.

I am flying the original Explorer that was renamed the Excelleron. the instructions that came with the Explorer calls for 10mm on elevator and 10mm on Aileron and 20mm on rudder. That is a very good starting point and you can fine tune from there.

The stupid throws in the Excelleron manual are W.R.O.N.G.

Eddie; Thanks for the readings. Your right, I think thats a good starting point. Tommy also sent me some measurements from memory that are the same. Thanks again---Pete
