I has a YS 1.20 in my Excelleron and had one woodscrew back out of the mount ral about half way through the season. I fixed that by using brass threaded inserts and machine screws. If you aren't sure about T nuts then the theaded inserts are a good way to go. You can get them at a woodworkers store or online. Here is a link to the micro fastener page for them http://www.microfasteners.com/catalog/products/NUTBTI.cfm

    Hi all

I finally got my Excelleron 90 despite years behind! Its prolly the last 2 unit from the LHS. Waiting for the YS110S engine.

Building the wing now and fabricate parts to strengthen LG area. I follow Dean Pappas rubber band hold on the wing mount.

For the LG, I have to remove the small triangle stock. I planned to put in a 3mm hard ply and reinforce with bigger triangle stock to spread the mounting load to the entire bottom area.

I read a lot for the last 30+ pages on this thread.

Given the feedback, I will most likely start with 7in CG. As for the fuel tank, I can only get 14oz dubro tank to fit in.

Does any of you felt the fuel tank should be relocate as close as possible to CG to avoid the drastic 14oz change. What about fuel and flooding with a much higher tank position in the fuse?

Which APC prop you all love on E90.

I also read that most use the original stock antivibe mount on YS110. How is it holding up?
BTW, I presume you all did the aileron hinge gap sealing?

    Thanks in advance.

    Magna,

I was hoping someone else would answer your post. My Excelleron crashed a number of months back and it has a Saito 125; therefore, I can't answer your YS questions. I've seen others have great results with that engine.

I am running an inverted OS 120 in mine. But... a high fuel tank is NOT GOOD for a couple of reasons. One is the expected problem with mid-range transition. Frankly, I do not notice the CG change with the provided tank position, but then again, I don't notice a lot of things. If you move the tank back, you might consider using a smaller feed tank in the normal tank position.

    Dean,

Last year I found a canopy that works. It is for the HYDE OUT, an older pattern plane I think. The co. was Precision Aero Composits, but that address doesn't work now. I called Mike and Maureen Danphy at 615-220-0655. I believe the code for it was Pacho 04. If you can get it, it will look like it is too big. You will have to trim quite a bit, but it works. Probably does not extend quite as high, but looks fine. Good luck.

Another canopy that works well, if you can still get one is from the Icepoint by UltraRC.
When I lost my first canopy, I had a 2nd plane NIB and I layed up a fiberglass replacement using the new one outta the 2nd plane as a mold - worked great. I think that plane is still my avatar.

I ran the YS 110 and moved the tank back to the CG. NO reason not too. Don't remember the prop, Maybe 15X10

I had no problems with the stock motor mount. I've read lots of reports of the rubber antivibe pieces getting soft over time but I flew mine for 3 years on the stock rubber.

After 3 crashes and reassemblies I had to strengthen the threads in the wood beam motormounts with sawdust and CA but it held fine, although I checked them often for fear of them working loose.

AFter you get it flying = put some popsickle sticks between the trailing edge of the wing and the fuse, changing the incidence, - you may like it better. If so it's an easy fix to shim down the mounting block in the fuse and make the change perminate.

    BTW
The JR Propo Explorer is the same plane and hte Excelleron had only "minor" changes such as tubes for pull pull addded.
There is loits of good info in this thread that will trasnlate to the Excelleron.

JR Propo V90 Explorer Suggestions and thoughts...

post #27 shows the new tank location and patternflyer tells how to do it.

    Hi all, Maiden flight today!
Just shy of 9lbs, using YS110, 14x10 APC. I love maidens!!

All went great. Love that rudder. Super easy knife edge. Pulls a little to the gear on one side. Seems neutral on the other side. Inverted great as well. Very little down needed. Balanced at 7 1/8" back.

Landing is a no brainer. It does hold speed pretty well. Fly in low and cut throttle to idle and let it settle in nice and easy.

I put five flights on it. The YS ran good. Descent idle, kind of soggy transition, rich all over. Ten minutes used about 7-9 ounces.

I'm only a sport flier. Usually fly at full throttle all the time. I found I was using less than full throttle quite a bit. Engine has about 1/3 gallon through it now. 1st YS for me, like it so far. Engine would pull this up from slow speed until it speced out.

    Smooth and groovy

Some one said you'll love this plane- so far so good. Got a few more flights in tonight.

Tried a knife edge loop- what a rush! Never had a plane that would climb in knife edge. I started out too low, coming over the top I throttled back to idle. Not the thing to do. Got higher and let it run full out in the down line. As it pulled into horizontal flight, it rolled to inverted. So I need work here.

Did fly the pattern in a knife edge. That was cool. Also flew the pattern steering with the rudder and using aileron to keep the wing level. It looks funny skidding through the turns.

    4 point rolls lookin better.

Low rates work well, high rates add more excitement. Havin fun groovin.

Glad to hear your maiden. I can't proceed with my excelleron until the YS110 available at my LHS! Its a pain as this engine is so short on supply.

To all who fly on YS110

I believe you have to angle the anti vibe mount outward because the YS110 is too narrow for the beam.

How many flights now with the stock anti vibe mount? You happy with the stock mount or going to replace them? I prolly need to file off the sharp angle of the aluminium block to prevent it from chaffing and cutting the crankcase.

Almost everyone in the Excelleron 90 thread have no issues with the stock mount on YS110 or other bigger engine. Right?

Me running in this weekend. Maiden next weekend... very anxious.

This thread seems to have been inactive for a long time, but here goes.... I got an Excelleron 90 second hand a couple of weeks ago with a Thunder Tiger 120 2C. This engine is life expired - has virtually zero compression, so I am thinking of replacing it with an ASP 1.08. Do you think that this engine will be up tp the task of pulling this rather large airframe through the air well?
    regards,
    Bruce.

I’ve never owned an ASP but if it is comparable to a YS120NC, it will power the plane quite well.

to Allan or to anyone using a YS 1.20 on the excelleron. what muffler are you using? ...and if a tuned pipe is used, can it be tunneled thru the fuse and wing belly pan? any other suggestions how to install the pipe? ...what modifications would I need to maintain the correct CG?

    thanks,

What I actually had was a JR Explorer V-90 FAI. From what I’ve read on the lists, this plane was the predecessor and nearly identical to the Excelleron. The main difference is mine had retracts while I believe the Excelleron’s is fixed. I used the screw-in muffler that came with the YS 120NC.

Prior to the Explorer, I had a Saphir that was also a one-piece wing plane on which I installed a long four-stroke muffler between the wing and belly pan. It was a real hassle to install and remove the muffler every time I took it out to fly - a fifteen to thirty minute exercise each way. After the Saphir I was determined never to build a plane that had to have the muffler or pipe removed in order to remove the wing.

There was a YS 1.20FZ in mine and I used a tuned pipe. Look at this post in this thread to get an idea.

Thanks guys for your prompt replies.
I planning to install a 120SC ..but it would be more convenient for me to just install a screw in muffler rather than make a tunnel for a pipe. Do you have an idea where i could get one( a light weight screw in muffler for the YS)?
    Thanks,
    Poy

The Asp does not have the power of the TT120 pro, but maybe if you put an Ultra Thrust muffler or other tuned pipe on, it may be close. How much does the airplane weigh ?

Central Hobbies should have one The muffler assembly from the 1.40 sport is a direct screw in muffler for the 1.20 YS engines.
