Status: offline 		It is easy to be a Monday morning quarterback, and I suspect you already know what went wrong. It's clearly shown in the second photo.

You used full up elevator to get the plane off the rough water ASAP. OK, but you didn't really have flying speed, so you needed to immediately level the plane and let it gain speed before attempting to climb. The second photo shows the airplane in a fully developed stall with the elevator held full up. From that point the pilot was simply "along for the ride".

I suspect that the airplane survived and hope that you have, or will try float flying again under better conditions. I also congratulate the photog. Those are GREAT photos.

Status: offline 		Thanks Guys, Yep...I was too excited to get in the air and had the elevator back to get going on the rough waves....I forgot I had so much elevator and it shot off the water and in the air before I knew what happened. Lost the windshield, prop, spinner and a wing strut....other than that it will be ready very quickly to go again. I won't give up...watching the planes fly around the lake, touch and goes off the water....doesn't get any better!

Status: offline 		Same thing happened to another guy at our Fun Fly meet. He drained it and did it right the second time. It was a maiden flight, and that can happen easily with 20 guys watching.

Nice plane
I am just getting started in the hobbie. I have a slow stick that I have put GWS floats on. It is not beautiful like your plane but it sure is fun. I fly on Whitefish Lake which is just north of Lake Rosseau. I was wondering if I could come and watch you fly sometime. I know the lakes are a little hard right now but maybe next summer.

I hate to tell you this, but

I built a Great Planes Decathlon (same color scheme btw)with Goldberg floats years ago, it never flew well with the floats

I suspect it was the full symmetrical wing fighting the floats,
That wing needed so much rotation angle that it was always fighting the floats, I could never get it to trim out and if I pulled up or down to quick the floats took over and pitched it up or down violently.

It finially augured in in a death spiral, hit the ground, but actually flew again,,,, without the floats

you should always have some negative incidence floats to the wing,,, never a flying wedge like that plane appears to have

Status: offline 		To be more precise, you should always set the zero lift angle of attack of the wing positive to the top of the floats. However, the zero lift angle of attack of a flat bottom wing is somewhere around 4 degrees negative, so the most effective incidence between a flat bottom wing and the floats is usually between zero and minus two degrees.

Although Cowboy's setup looks pretty extreme in the photos, it obviously gets off the water OK.

Status: offline 		For best flight performance the floats need to be level when the airplane is flying at cruise speed. Any deviation, positive or negetive, will create excessive lift/drag which can result in the pitch sensitivity you mentioned. Proper float setup is a compromise between on-water performance and in-flight performance. Factors to be considered include airfoil, wing loading, power, desired flight performance, expected water conditions, and many more. The best setup is different for every airplane.

Status: offline 		Not one problem. Looks can be deceiving, on the "extreme angle", because it's not. Floats are level to the stab.

I have 1 degree positive incidence on the wing when the floats are at perfect level. The floats where set up perfectly level to the horizontal stab, then the step directly under the CG using a plumb line. We made the struts about an inch taller than needed, but no worries there. I didn't have to change the elevator trim from flying with wheels to flying with floats, or the other way around, since I can change it up in about 5 minutes either way.

They are Sea Commander 38" gull wing floats. KMP Husky, OS 120 pump ( I fly at 5000 feet so it's like a 91 at sea level), 15X7 3 blade prop, Electrodynamics remote glow, Futaba 3004 servos, JR 770 receiver.

In the 3rd picture I am just giving it power to take off, so you see a lot of up elevator. As soon as it begins to get up on step I let off the elevator.

It will go all the way across the lake at full speed without lifting off without flaps. When I get to speed to take off, all I have to do is tap the elevator and it climbs out nice and easy (no flaps). If I use take off flaps (around 15 degrees), it will lift off at about the same speed without elevator input at pretty much the same angle as using a tap of elevator with no flaps. Landings are smooth as glass flaps or not, just a little faster without flaps. Sets perfectly on the floats, and sticks every time. No water rudder, so I use the up elevator on taxi and take off to help with the rudder control.

I have to contribute the setup to Cublover. The guy sure knows his float setups. I had heard stories about having to yank airplanes off the water, and he showed me how to set it up without having to do that at all. It pretty much flies itself off the water. He said its simple. Right size floats, floats level to stab, CG directly in line with the step. Works great. He set up a Super Stick the same way and it works the same.

Wing Span.: 80in/2035mm
Wing Area.: 946sq in/61sq dm
Fuselage Length.: 53in/1350mm
Flying Weight.: 7-8 lbs.
Engine Spec.: .60 2 cycle or .91 4 cycle
Servo's Required.: 5 channels 8 servos
