the 'mog was originally designed as a farm implement. that's why they look so tractor-ish

For out-and-out toughness, give me back my old '76 FJ-40 Land Cruiser. I drove that thing into places I couldn't even walk to. As far as H-2, H-3?.. give me my dually. Haul more, pull more, go more places, ride better, better mileage, and cost less.

Fj's are awesome. Though are some extremely tough machines. In the "old school" category, it's a toss up of a fj or an International Scout!

the Scout and the 1st gen Bronco and FJ40 are all hosses...oddly enough, superior in almost all ways to the Jeep CJ's, yet not as popular when they were around, what gives?

oh ya forgot about the Bron. Guess I jut grouped it with the scout. They are absolute beasts!
I guess they weren't as mass produced as the cjs.
I lived out in Idaho for a couple of years and there are way more FJs, Broncs, and Scouts than cjs. And thoses are the daily drives cause you have to have a 4x4 in order to get home!

I guess CJ's were a bit more 'mainstream' than the others. Toyota NEVER adverstised the 'Cruiser, International didn't advertise much of anything, and the Ist gen Bronco wasn't around long enough to establish its rep before Ford screwed up and upsized it, trying to make it better for everybody, instead of making it better for it's purpose.

I used to go 4-wheeling every weekend, probably had as many off-road miles as highway miles on mine. Never let me down once. Was actually a not-so-great highway vehicle, would only do about 65 wide open, and you didn't want to run it like that because it was so damn loud from wind, road and engine noise. But get it in the mud, or on a rocky trail, or bumper-deep snow, or headlight-deep water, put it in 4-low, and it was in its element. Several people I knew with them installed small-block Chevy's in theirs; made it a better highway vehicle, and sounded mean, but the straight 6 was much better off-road.

straight six's have so much low end. Horrible on gas, but then fuel economy isn't the reason they were built. I hope to buy a Fj one of these days. For now I have to live with a Z71 Suburban. At least I can 4x4 with the whole family in comfort.

cman, i dunno about that, the 304 in my CJ7 sucked a LOT more gas than the 258 in my buddy's 5.

course then again, the 2.8 V6 in my Isuzu Trooper got worse than either of em

but boy was that trooper's fully enclosed cabin a lot nicer in the winter...

I had debated buying the Cruiser (brand new in 1976) because I had had an Opel GT that got 25 mpg and was a little rocket, and I knew the "Cruiser" only got 12-14 at best, and gas was a horrendous 52 cents/gal . But a friend had one, and it was a blast. I paid $5700 for mine, with all the options available that year (rear heater, locking front hubs). Now, the Land Cruiser FJ-40 was not imported after 1978 (27 years, now) and finding one in the trades that is in any kind of shape you'll pay at least $6500-$7000. Talk about holding its value.

I finally knocked a pinhole in the oil pan one day on a rock pile of a trail, ran the oil out of it going home, and trashed two con-rod big ends. Sold it as it was, and never saw it for over ten years; one day, I pulled up behind it at a traffic light (recognized it from a big crease in the fender and a bumper sticker I had put on it). I followed the guy a couple of miles til he pulled into a parking lot, and talked to him. His brother had bought it from me, both of them had torn the engine down, replaced the two rods, and had been driving it ever since. It had 96,000 miles on it when I sold it (over 8 years of driving) and they had put another 125,000 on it without ANY major failures or replacements. It had some rusted out areas under the rear fenders, but was the same color and still had the original seats (pretty bad shape when I sold it) and the gas mileage still sucked

Most the people I kmow are still running on the original engines with 250+ thousand miles. They are better than the energizer bunny!
They keep going and going...
But they do require oil. Bummer of a day that was I bet.
I love them. One day it will be mine.
Unfortuntily, I wasn't born till '79, so I never had a chance of a new one. How cool that would be.
Though I was brought home from the hospital in clothes basket, stuck behind the seat of a Ram Charger if that counts for anything.

I was born in '81, so the fullsize bronco had gone into full swing, the FJ40 was long gone (although the 60 is still a nice rig), and the 1st gen Trooper (only IFS trucks i REALLY like are Isuzus, so get used to it:P) was still 3 years off...

oh yeah, and then there's the Jeeps with the weak axles. D'OH!
