I have a 95 h1, and just sold my 03 h2. They both suck for gas mileage, aerodynamic as a block wall. I prefer the h1 for off roading as I take it into the sand dunes at least once a week, and just stomping around the desert a few times a week. If I lived in a wooded area a jeep would be my first choice.

The H1 is not a huge vehicle, but is heavy 10300 gvw is what the sticker says on the door jam. It handles completely different off road. Almost always has at least one tire off the ground when going over technical obstacles.

I personally do not like the h3, but do see alot of them on the road.

The h2 I had was not stable with any type of offroading, very top heavy, but had nice gearing in low range.

Have you owned a ford? I'm looking into a 97-98 or so Ranger 5 speed 4x4 with the v6. If so howd they treat ya. As for Gm I know. I own(or will own soon got to wait till 16) a 1994 Saturn sc2. IT was my mom's then she got a disease and could not drive any more for 3 years it sat just being run every 3-4 months or so. It start right up. I love it but it's a little too small for 6' 210ib. me. and only 28k on it!!!! My Dad says I need a truck and I agree.

Any car will last forever if you take care of it. I plan on my little Jeep Liberty living well past 200k miles with no major issues, aside from probably breaking the aluminum front diff housing:P

the older Ranger 4x4s are nice little trucsk...in 97 they still had the old swingaxle IFS, and in 98 they switched to the double A arm setup that the Explorer uses. If you plan on modifying the truck, get the 93-7, if not, get a 98+.

good luck finding a 4x4 with a stick and a V6, my brother can't find one to save his life.

bandi...get it straight, the H3 is not based on a GM product, unless you count the Isuzu-built compacts as GM products.

the only reason I think the H3 is worth a crap is because of my previous experiance with Isuzu's 4x4s. they build some damn good trucks. and the H1 isn't based on anything GM makes either, aside from having the 6.5L turbodiesel.

the H3 is the same exact platform as the colorado/canyon. H2 is "derived' from the C/K 1500 platform. A distant cousin of sorts to the 'burban. Of course the H1 is the orignal design of AM General with some of the "finer" touches ..i.e. air-conditioning.

Oh ya... the 6.5 diesel... not the greated piece of work to come out of Detroit. They never really stood a chance against Powerstokes or Cummins. I love GMC trucks, but was going to by a Dodge till the Duramax came out. Now I just wish I could get one in a burban and I would be a happy man.

H1 is a military vehicle. shares nothing with any other production vehicle on earth, aside from the NV242 transfer case, the engine, and the transmission.

the H2 is a Tahoe-based SUV.

the H3 is basically a snazzy looking Isuzu Trooper.

*EDIT*

Just for the record, to you Hummer fans that talk crap about Jeeps...AM General was owned by AMC when the Humvee was originally designed. AMC also owned Jeep. And, more to the point, Jeep engineers worked on the Humvee

Maybe that explains why the Humvee/Hummer/H1 is the best one

*EDIT* again..

thanks warbirds

OK here is a link to the break down on what is what in the Hummer world http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GM_GMT_platform#GMT800
The H2 rides on the GMT800 series, more specific the GMT820 derived. I found that while it is a GMC frame, AM General makes it for them. That adds a little "trail cred" to the H2,...but not much. Any way, there is alot of info so have at it. ps... did you know the pontiac vibe and toyota matrix are the same car?? The internet is gggrrreat.
