Hello Mike,

I found in one of these threads where you made a comment about the potentiometer in the HS-5645 being "cheaper" (at least that's the word I think you used) than the one in the HS-5945. When I go to the Hitec website, both spec sheets say "Long Life Potentiometer". Is there any difference in the quality of the pots between these two servos (5645 and the 5945)?

Also a question about deadband: I also read in one of the threads something like 1000uS was 60 degrees. Would that be .06 degrees per microsecond? If so, here's my last question:

If I were to program the deadband on my HS-5645 at, for example, to 5uS instead of the default 1uS, wouldn't that help increase the life of the servo potentiometer (and maybe the geartrain)? 5uS is 5 x .06 degrees = .3 degrees. That seems pretty tight to me, and the servos wouldn't be working all of the time to try to keep a perfect center (deadband). Am I on track or confused? Thanks.

These servos use the same potentiometer. The only issue you may ever see with them is that the contact points may get a little dirty over time. The potentiometer can easily be cleaned with some zero residue electrical contact cleaner. There really is no need to change the dead band of the servo unless you are ganging multiple servos to a single surface.

Brendan,

Thanks for the info. I feel better that the pots are the same. My thought about deadband was also related to vibration. If vibration from a gasoline engine, for example, were to transmit to the control surfaces, wouldn't it (the vibration) cause the servos to try harder to maintain zero position (deadband)- especially if the deadband was set at the minimum (1 uS)?

This leads me to another question: Is the deadband only when the control surfaces are at zero (control sticks on transmitter are at neutral) or is it the change in pulse width needed to move a surface from any position? Thanks.

Marl

It would help a little to increase the dead band.

By increasing the dead band you increase the amount of time it takes for the servo to react to your stick movement. It is kind of like an exponential.
