I finally got my shockwave in today(still haven't started it yet). I was reading the manual on it and it was talking about upgrading the performance of the engine. Has anyone removed the head shims after the engine was broke in? Does it really make that much more power? Does anyone have a part # for the replacement flex shaft that has been suggested? Thanks.

I replaced my original flex shaft with part number PRA8020. I've had no problems since replacing it, but I would suggest lubricating the shaft regularly and checking that the flex shaft collet is tight.

I also removed the plastic shim on the shaft after the strut as I saw no use for it.

Another thing while I think of it...

For anyone in Australia that is thinking of buying this boat, ensure that you replace the transmitter and receiver. The original system is 75Mhz. In Australia, taxi's use this fequency for their radios. I initially had a problem where every now and then the boat would go virtually spastic. Obviously a taxi was in the near vacinity.

27Mhz is the recommended frequency for Australia.

On Brian's site you'll see that it is cheaper than the price on the package. I've been using Hughey flex cables for a long time and haven't had a bit of trouble with them.
I just got home from a swap meet and was talking to a LHS owner. He and one of his employees have SW 36's and have had the same problem with their cables too. from what I gathered, his breakage seems to be coming from where the cable exits the hull. That's telling me that there is an alignment problem at the transom or that the hard shaft is going too far in. You should be able to feel it if it isn't going into the stuffing tube freely.

The only problem I have had with my SW36's flex shaft was that upon inspection of alignment of the exit hole in transom to strut was off by about .080" therefore binding shaft with strut. I had to fill the mounting bolt holes in strut bracket with JB weld and re-drill bolt hole pattern for proper alignment of exit hole in transom to strut.

I haven't ran my shockwave yet b/c I have some questions concerning the fuel. The owners manual rec. the use of Blue Thunder 20%. My question is what is the difference in the reg. blue thunder and the "race formula". The race formula was 20% blend that I looked at. I'm assuming that it's the amount of oil in the fuel. Is this correct? The local hobby shop only has the "race formula" in stock. Are you supposed to use the same fuel that you use on the first run the engine' life span? I also read about taking out head shims for more performance after "break-in." Will I be compromising durability and reliability by doing so? Does anyone recommend port matching the header, or is it even needed? Is the stock pipe adequate or is there better pipes that fit in it's place? What prop. is recommended for increased performance? Which glow plug do I need to purchase for extras? Thanks

I used some 10-15 "Break In" with 5% nitro to break the motor in. It ran like crap, but it ensured successful a break in. The temptation was there to switch to a better fuel, but doing this will make sure that the motor is looked after during break in. I ran about 5 tanks through it at low revs and used After Run when finished after each each outing. The 20% would be the nitro content. Blue Thinder is not available where I live, so I use a similar 20% blend and the results are good. The blend I use 68% methyl alcohol, 20% nitro, 12% oil.

I took the head shim out, but put it back in as there was no significant increase in performance surprisingly. I took the header off and found a huge welding dag inside and carefully filed this back. I haven't ported it as I don't have the skills, but I would assume a fair bit can be done as the faces don't match that well.

Regarding the pipe: I don't see any problems with the standard pipe but I suggest you replace the rubber coupling. Mine broke within 2 hours of use. I also flared the end of the pipe and the header slightly to ensure a tight fit around the rubber coupling.

Regarding the props:
Octura X440, accelerates badly.
Octura X445, quite good.
These props are sharpened and balanced and are available from Offshore Electrics
The original prop is quite good also.

Regarding the plugs: I've run an 8 and an A5 and have seen no real difference.

Put some extra floatation in the hull in case you flip it. This includes putting some on the underside of cockpit lid. Mine sank like a stone when it came off once.

Hope this helps
Brad

Go with the one with the higher oil content, that's more important than nitro percentage.

That's what I had in mind, but I couldn't find an oil percentage on the labels. I'm going to call the hobby shop I got it from and ask them.
