Schroedm:
Look at the "Does your DA-50 do this" thread on the gas engine column. This updates on mine were new crank and some modification to the carb to prevent puddling of gas. I and many others were having problems with the engine quitting when the plane landed. Other heavy users were having problems with the crank, I beleive. All updates were quick and at no charge.

I know some of the other Comp ARF's tend to be a little heavy but are still floaters when it comes to landing. How's this plane landing wise with a gas engine like a DA 50?

Hi Mark,

Excellent work she looks fantastic, particularly with the additional decals. What sort of a power box are you using? I look forward to your flight report.

Cheers

Hi Lang,

Didn't get out over the weekend - hoping to fly her tonight!

I'm not running a powerbox - don't think it's necessary on this size model. Am running the new(ish) PowerBox sensor switch connected to 2 TP2100mah Lipo (excellent bit of kit) and a Powerbox systems voltage regulator on a TP2100mah lipo for ignition.

Rgds,
Mark

Hi Mark,

OK I have been investigating some gear from that site and they have some good gear. This is why my 2x2 is still in the box, our baby Georgia!

Hope you had a good flight.

Cheers

OK, managed to get a maiden on her in the dying light last night - have to say it was very impressive! Not a single click of trim was required although I did have my CofG way too far back (would climb on an inverted 45 degree upline ) so things weren't as 'locked in' as they could have been.

The DA50 was set to run a little on the rich side but was still generating silly amounts of power! Was hovering around 1/3 throttle.

My mods to the control surfaces gave me some 3D rates that were simply mental - about 4 rolls a second and enough elevator for superb harriers (which had very little wing rock).

Need some more right thrust - may use a rudder to throttle mix first to see if that works well.

Loads of torque from the DA when torque rolling - needs plenty of right aileron to conteract it.

Overall, a very impressive machine which, when I've got CofG etc sorted, should be an absolute blast!

Will report back soon!

Rgds,
Mark

Hi Mark,

Your comments on the flight performance highlight the correct power choice of the DA-50. It sounds like your first flight went very well, also with the zero trim correction which says a lot about the quality of the Comp arf. Did you have any pictures of the mods that you did on the control surfaces? I would also be interested in some 3D levels of control surface movement. The stock down elevator is not much compared to the unlimited up elevator.

Thanks for any feedback.

Cheers

Lang

How did you go with finding the correct C of G for your set up Mark?
Interested to know since i hope to fly mine within the next couple of weeks.
Weapon of choice was a ZDZ 50 NG running a bisson wrap around muffler. Should be good. used JR 8425's on elevator and the ailerons. Got a new JR 8411 lying around so will utilize this for rudder control. Any one using the 8411 on rudder as recommended by Comp-arf? Indecisive on whether to step up to an 8511. Would have thought the 8411 to be recommended would be extremely more than enough. i guess most of us aeromodellers just over servo our aircraft for piece of mind. i certainly can endorse this through my jets! More output is always safer.!

Hi Stephen,

Basically I set it up with the Cof G right at the very back of the recommended range but for my test flights I didn't have my spinner on which put the CofG even further back. It was certainly flyable and wasn't a handful at all - I just prefer my models a little more locked in - have now set it 95mm back from the wing tip LE - will see how this goes.

The regular CofG test is simply to roll inverted. If the model pulls to the ground then your CofG needs to go back, if it climbs then CofG to go forward, if it flies level then you're pretty much at the back limit but most like to hold a little 'down' when inverted so CofG should come forward a little.

The 8411 will be fine on the rudder. I'm with you on the over servoing! I now seem to have got into the habit of only ever buying 8511s - expensive? sure, but I know I'll always have a servo for whatever I need! As with you, these servos have have proven themselves in my jets too.

Rgds,
Mark

PS Just to remind you - make sure everything is securely held down in your model. These 50cc singles really shake the airframes. Don't rely on self adhesive clips/clamps to hold anything more than cables in place. Anything heavier, either epoxy the clamps in place or epoxy a balsa plate or similar in place to which you can securely tie wrap items.

Great Mark.
With the C of G wide open to "user comfort" I will start at 90mm i think and work my way back. Although i like a slightly tail heavy aircraft, I certainly will be taking my time to set the model up thoroughly to ensure perfection through 3D to general IMAC/F3A styled flight usage. Certainly have been impressed with the kit. Yeah i certainly agree with the use of strong adhesives throughout fitting out. Aeropoxy has done the job well once again! Glad you agree with my rudder servo choice. had a spare newie laying around so certainly saves more money. Adds up quick on this one thats for sure, but damn worth it.

Look forward to more flight reports/ good news

Stephen

Guys,

Put a few more flights on her (only 4 more) but have got her quite nicely dialled in.

This is what I have found....

Due to the insane power of the DA50 on this airframe you will most likely need a throttle to rudder mix. Mix some right rudder (think it was 10%) from about 60% throttle and up. The right thrust in the manual is fine for 60% and below.

You probably won't need any rudder to aileron mix for knife edge - I didn't.

You will need some elevator to rudder mix for knife edge - I have about 10% but this will change depending on your CofG position.

I also felt a huge transformation through manouevers when I mixed in about 4% down elevator at idle. Downlines stay dead vertical and it stops any balloning when you cut the throttle to land.

I can fly for 30mins easy with the DA50 and the 24oz tank so this could be swapped for a much smaller/lighter fuel load.

After 4 10min flights I recharged my 2100mAh lipos and put approx 450mAh back in them. The ignition back however required about 1000mAh which suprised me!

Anyway, will keep you posted of any changes/insights!

Rgds,
Mark

I finally maidened my Extra 2x2, got already 15 flights on it.

I haven't programmed any mixes yet, i only programmed a throttle curve so i can hover at 1/2 throttle instead of 1/3!!! It's just easier to control the rudder that way....
Thanks for your info on the mixes schroedm

I maidened mine with the CG 115mm back from the wing tip LE. No probs for F3A or 3D flying.

I'm still breaking in the engine with a Menz 22x8, i'll take more pics when i put the mejzlik 23x8 and carbon spinner on it.

I made some ventilation holes in the back of the fuse because the muffler(no tunnel) was heating up my electronics
