Well we all cut foam with a hot knife, but some times can always find the michrome wire. Well if your out of luck with the michrome, u can jsut go to the local music store an pick up some gutar string. Works excelent, and doesnt really break, even if it is forced threw the foam.

Please resist the urge to curse, flame, degrade, insult or embarrass someone in your post. We encourage the free flow of your ideas, but believe that they can be communicated (and received) much more effectively if you keep things civil. If you have to vent, take it offline. I had a hard time finding the nichrome wire too, couldn't straighten out the toaster element either, so I used the stainless steal wire for control line planes. there is 2 super long wires for 20 bucks canadian. I have cut about 20 wings with no breakage.

Other sources for wire that can be used in a foam-cutter are:

1. Stainless steel welding wire (MIG) which can be had down to 0.6mm (0.024" or less.
2. Stainless steel aircraft safety wire

The MIG wire is usually at least half-hard (ie: quite stiff) but the safety wire is annealed (very soft).

The advantage of using both of these is that they're slightly thicker than most nichrome wire which means you can operate them under quite a bit more tension -- and that makes for a more accurate cut -- although they do require a little more current.

0.004" tungsten wire works wonders at the right tension and temperature - an almost non-existant kerf!
