The 63 is supposed to burn 1/2 oz per minute.

I'm not getting that. I get about 9 minutes on an average flight with an 8 oz tank, and that's using throttle management.

I'm running 20/20 and I fly it backed down about 400 rpm from peak. I've got about 2 gallons through it, and it's running great. Props are APC 13x6 or 14x4W.

The 9 minutes with 8 oz sounds about right from what I've seen. Most people are running at least a 10 oz and some who have the room are using the 12oz.

Enjoy,

Jim

Yup, I figured with it making that kind of power the fuel consumption would be more than advertized.

This motor is awesome! I need another one!

Now I have to figure out how to wedge a 10 into my Laser 3D.

Thanks!

The 20% nitro is what is destroying your fuel economy, but I doubt you'll be willing to give it up.

Just for a hoot one day, try a few tanks of 5% nitro fuel. You'll be amazed at how your fuel economy increases and how little difference there is in power. Throttling may be another matter.

Hmm. I'm running my .63 in my Ultra Stick with a 10 oz. tank. My timer is set for 10 minutes, which I always get regardless of throttle management. There's usually an ounce or two remaining in the tank at the end of a flight.

Haven't run it out of fuel in the air yet.

BTW I'm running an APC 13x6 prop and 30% nitro 20% oil fuel with *fantastic* results.

The APC 13x6 is a sweet prop for the YS63. I've also used the APC 14x4W, which is really cool, but pricey.

If you have an ounce or two left after a 10 minute flight, you can see why I've deadsticked a couple of times with an 8 ounce tank after about 9 minutes.

I cut the bottom out of my Laser 3D last night and I'll be able to fit a Dubro 10 ounce tank in with no problem.

I wonder where YS came up with the 1/2oz per minute figure. I get about 9 minutes out of a 9 oz tank. Thats running YS 20/20 fuel and running slightly rich on a new engine. She sure runs sweet though.

Ed;
forget about 5% nitro in a YS. The engine won't run worth a damn on anything less than 15%. My friend tried to run 10% in his FZ 120. The engine ran like crap. She barely started.

I meant to comment on that. I ran my first YS .53 on 15% as it was all I had on hand. It ran OK but the power and handling didn't live up to the YS reputation.

Next time I ordered fuel I brought in *one* case of 20/20. Ran one tank and whoo! More power, it ran cooler and lost its tendency to detonate when slugging a Big Prop.

After that experience I decided to try a case of 30%. This resulted in more power; the handling/tuning charastics are still sweet.

I'm debating whether to go with all 30% or 20% from now on. My .53s run quite well on 20%; in fact I finished a gallon of 30% this weekend, opened up and ran a new gallon of 20% right afterward and didn't notice a whole lot of difference. I was able to lean the engine a tad more so fuel economy on my SE went up from an average 12 minutes to 17 minutes (the engine went dead while taxiing back... the 10 oz. tank was dry)

I'm going to fly my .63 this coming weekend on the 20% fuel. If I don't notice a huge performance difference I might just stay with the 20% and pocket the difference.

I knew this was going to happen when Horizon started bragging up 30% nitro heli fuel for Saito four-strokes. Unfortunately, I was right.

Yes, four-strokes utilize nitro better than two-strokes, but part of the problem with YS four-strokes now is that they have been optimized to run high nitro fuel. This sucks.

For those too new to the hobby to remember, YS engines used to be set up to burn 0% to 5% nitro, and they ran extremely well with this type of fuel.

Does anyone remember YS's titanium piston a while back that was having problems staying together? It too was designed to operate on lower nitro content fuels. We 'muricans blew a bunch of them up with too much go juice. YS accomodated the American market and changed their engines to run with more nitro. They had no choice.

If we were running up against a displacement limit in competition flying, then I could understand the desire to get more power through nitromethane, but we're not. All we are doing is wasting money and guaranteeing that our current YS engines will be nearly useless should the nitro plant go down again. Yes, it has happened before and it can happen again.

I can't comment on older YS engines that ran on 0-5% nitro. However, I've been running engines since 1968, and I've learned a few things. Zero nitro stinks if you want a good idle or throttle transition. 5% is okay for sport flying on some engines, and even better for those that are designed for it, like the Irvine MK-IIIs, etc.

My YS will run great on 15%, but much better on 20%. I won't bother with 30% for the little it will get me. This thing turns larger props faster than a Saito 72 as it is.

Some of this depends on your flying style and aircraft selection. For instance, if I was just tooling around with an Astro Hog (not a slam), I might not care as much for instant acceleration after a prolonged idle as I would if I was doing a harrier all the way down the runway with a Seduction.

It would be great if I could buy 5% for all my engines for $9 per gallon, but I really don't mind burning $15 fuel in a $250 engine.

What we really need is a lightweight, gas burning 91 4-stroke. I'd spend $350 for that! I could save that much in fuel costs in no time at all.

I'll meet you half way. I would like it if they would provide both versions of the engines. That way we both could have what we want. I understand your need for super crisp throttle response.

I agree on the .91 or larger gas burner. That would be fun.
