Is the GP Fling strong enough to discus launch for fun? If not can it be beefed up to take the extra stress? How?

Thanks

I wouldn't try it with mine, you want to try it with your's, good luck. These are light thermal airplanes not really what you want for a discus launch....

What would you suggest for a discus launch that is CHEAP? I dont want anything competitive, just for fun. Rudder, Elevator only or with ailerons, either is fine

Thanks for the response, The Gambler looks good and $70 is only $12 more than the Fling, but I will have to build it and will spend more on covering and other odds and ends. One more question though. The construction looks identical on the Gambler to the Fling (built up wing etc) so what makes the Fling poor for discus style launching?

Thanks for educating a newcomer to gliders, I thought the electrics were the ultimate anywhere flyers but these gliders are great, you can fly all day on one charge!!! Anywhere.

Well the Gambler does have some extra features to make it stronger...carbon-fiber in the wing, etc.......You can launch that thing as hard as possible and it wont show any wear+tear.

Good luck,
Mark

I have tip lanched the fling many many many times - though I don't qualify as a DLG pro. The only caveat I have with the FLing is that I have had a HARD time getting the pull-pull wires tight. I end up with flutter in the elevator if I heave too hard. That being said, I've had a lot of fun with it as a SAL. A little right rudder (I thow left handed) and down elvator are preset on two switches over the right TX stick. 3 steps, twirl and let fly , kill rudder preset, then elevator preset - and fly baby fly

Get one - try it. What have you got to lose?

A friend of mine put DLG peg on the Fling. It disc launches just fine, except it's kind of light for it to gain a lot of altitude. I use heavy duty high start instead of the mini up start to launch my own Fling and have had no problem at all. It is a great little thermaller.

http://www.upslopesailplanes.com/index.html might be worth a look. I'm just finishing up the Spinner and the parts are outstanding.

How many pounds of pull do you use on your hi-start? I was wondering what the limit of the fling wing is or what it will tolerate.

I don't have a scale to measure. I just pull it as far as I think the Fling can handle and launch. It does rise quickly to the full length of my slightly shortened (about 375 ft) Dynaflite Heavy Duty Hi-Start. It does get quite high up there.
