Glad I found this board. Lots of good info on what to look for. Just got my LST and from a fellow racer who ran only 4 tanks through it.

Immediately pulled the washer. The washer itself looked to be in decent shape but had a slight cone shape to it. I wasn't going to take the chance. I also have a brand new LST still in the box. I'm going to pull that one when I get ready to run it!

Well with 3/4 gal thru my LST, its time to take out the washer. I know many of you say I should have already, but...

My friend's washer gave way yesterday at the tail end of our mud bashing. We had a great time. About the run the last tank through, his engine wouldn't crank... the rotostart wouldn't turn the enging at all... I had him pull the head off and he found 1/2 washer and metal fragments. I am not waiting any longer, I want to do it myself.

We have both read these forums, I have always intended on removing the washer... I dont think he really did.

My question is more about removing the engine...

Is it best to remove the engine by taking it off the engine mounts or (I think I read this elsewhere) removing the engine with the mounts still attached? I know you want to align everything when you put the engine back and was just wondering the easiest way of doing this.

My apologies if this is the wrong thread to ask,

Remove the engine while it is still attached to the engine mounts. There are 4 hex head screws on the underside of the truck that hold the engine mount in place.

Use patience removing the screws that hold the rotostart plate in place. Same advice for the 4 screws that hold the engine backplate in place. If you strip the heads of the screws, just go to the harware store and get replacements.

Consult the truck manual for advice in adjusting the mesh between the spur gears and the pinion gears as you get ready to replace the engine and tighten the screws that hold it in place.

It's really just a matter of preference. If you have a quality ball-end hex-driver, then you can remove the engine from the top side, which leaves the mounts still attached to the truck. Doing it this way means that you won't have to readjust the gear mesh upon reinstallation, just bolt the engine back onto the mounts. If you don't have a quality ball-end hex-driver, then you can remove the cooling head (4 screws) to gain access to the mounting screws.

If you don't like the above method, you can just remove the 4 screws from the bottom of the truck that hold the engine mounts in place. This is the easiest way to do it, but you'll have to reallign the gear mesh upon reinstallation.

even though i dont have a ball hex (i do, but not in that particular size) i always take the engine out leaving the mounts still attached, then you can just drop it straight in. lthough i have to take off the engine head, this takes like 20secs.

I pulled my engine by removing the 4 screws from the bottom which removed the mounts. I found that to be "easiest".

Don't be "afraid" of having to redo the mesh. Of all the MTs I own and Nitro buggies, aligning the gears on the LST is the easiest of the bunch cause you can clearly see the mesh, unlike some of the buggies where you have to do it by feel.

Did the box appear to be opened when you bought the truck?

It sounds as if alot of non-U.S. distributors are removing the washer before selling the trucks, but we haven't heard from anyone in the States who bought their truck "washerless".

Hi Jefx,

no, there was defnitely no sign of being opened before..... I can“t imagine that "Graupner" (distributor in Germany) would remove the washer. About 45 minutes of work for every set ?? ... Nobody in german rc-forums talks about that washer - I am sure that Graupner has never heard about that problem even until today :-))

So, it will definitely be the best way to take it out, if there is one....

Do you have the engine out and apart right now? If so, post a picture of the conrod where the washer would normally go.

There have been several cases of people who thought they didn't have a washer, but it turns out that they just couldn't see it. It's very well camoflauged against the conrod bushing.

If you really don't have the washer, then that's great! It would be nice to know at what serial number they stopped using the washer, so we can let everyone know in this sticky thread.

If anyone else has found that their engine has no washer, please report the serial number in this thread!

no, no, there was no washer - I even carefully tried with a small screwdriver to find it....and I looked exactly at the posted pictures before. No, the engine is already back in his place...but I am sure...

I have LST #11685 and my truck didnt have the washer either. I even opened it up again to inspect and trust me there is no washer. I guess they began to remove it? Hope this info helps out.

That's awesome!

So the earliest recorded serial numbered truck we have here without the washer is #11685. Can anyone beat this?
