Status: offline 		Wow--almost makes me want to get another just because it's so cheap!

I'm using 2/3AAA NimH 350mah CBP packs from cheapbatterypacks.com. I almost wish I had gotten slightly bigger packs since I had to end up adding weight to the nose to balance it, and that would just be extra capacity. That's something to consider guys---if you're not using landing gear, you will probably have to add weight to the nose to balance the plane, so you may just try a bigger battery.

Johnny C, I didn't get a throttle servo in my kit. And I haven't had any problems with my motor mount.

Status: offline 		It took me about 1 hour to build the DF unit. Not much to it.
The drill fixture worked perfectly. I used a 5/64" drill bit for
the pilot holes. I was concerned with drilling that size hole
in the fuel tank tabs, but it seems OK. The whole unit seems
pretty solid.

It is an .061. No holes for the .074 muffler, as noted by pt.
Speaking of which, the motor mount arms are not adjustable.
The structural part of the DF, is molded in one piece. This
includes the front ring, the centering vanes & the motor mount.
There must be a different front ring for the larger engine.

I used the starter on the DF, & boy does it scream! I can't wait
to hear it run! But, just like always, I seem to always screw
something up... I let the starter get out of alignment & it chewed
half moon cuts in 5 of the six starter vanes. I guess I'll try grinding
a similar cut in the last vane. So much for being balanced!

I took few pictures, but in the interest of download time, here's
one. Let me know if anyone wants more.

I did also cut the upper fuse. I used a new exacto blade & angled
the knife back to give a little more engagement than just the tabs
on the lower sides.

I think I'm going to try the balloons for protection of the servo.
Maybe a finger form a rubber glove. Also it shows the throttle
push rod bent in a large radius. I have no idea why this would
be required. I made mine straight.

Have you guys rec'd the 2005 Tower catalog yet? I thought
I would have gotten mine with my Mig order.

$109 SUX!!!! I thought I was getting a deal at $130!

Spencer, what battery pack would you recommend then?
We'll be hand launching with no gear.

Status: offline 		Don't feel bad Johnny. I also chewed up those starter vanes and mine are also half moons. But I filed them down a bit and now they are very clean half-moons, and all the same size, so it's balanced fine.

Putting together the fan unit was the hardest part for me (or it took the longest anyway). I didn't realize I didn't have enough servos when I started the build because I thought the kit came with a throttle servo. Bought a servo and it didn't fit the screw mounts (servo too small), so I had to screw one side in and run a peice of wire through the other screw hole on the servo and tie it down around the fuel tank. It's pretty secure, but I had a heck of a time trying to come up with a way to mount it.

I bent the throttle wire as shown in the manual...just because that's how it was shown. Most of the time when I deviate from the instructions, I screw something up. I guess the bend is to allow a little give if the servo is pulling too far either way. A straight wire would strain it. I haven't thought about covering up the servo, but I guess it needs it! It gets pretty slimed!

I envy you guys who are getting this thing for 100 bucks. I remember when they first came out they were over $300! And get this---Kamdax is developing an F-16. If it's anything like the Mirage or the Mig, you will be able to just unscrew the fan unit from the plastic mount in the Mig and interchange it as needed. You'll only need to buy the foam parts for the 16. That's a lot cheaper than buying a $300 kit.

Make your own pack. Cheap and fast. Like I said, I got the CBP 2/3AAA. Now that I've thought about it more, I'm not sure getting a pack any larger is such a good idea because the canopy is so far back that it wouldn't make that much difference in balancing. It may be better just to get the 2/3AAA and then add weight as far forward a possible. I epoxied some lead right into the foam on the nose of mine, and it is covered by the plastic nose ring. Besides, I kept the weight down by not using the wingtip plastic and using the smallest possible electronics.

Status: offline 		You guys overshop things, just like me. After y'all saying you didn't get a throttle servo I went back and looked. Only the .080 upgrade comes with the throttle servo. Glad I have some spares. Didn't see that until after I ordered one. But at 110 bucks I won't be calling to complain!

You'll need two for a lear, right? That'll be a little more difficult.

How are you guys covering the servo with a balloon? Leave the horn off and make a slit for the gear to stick through?

Status: offline 		On the throttle servo, I was thinking why not just use a small length of the sullivan flex cable. You could shroud the servo and route the cable out a hole in the shroud.

Status: offline 		pt, that's what I was thinking. Maybe even slit the rubber for the servo arm, but not pull
it back to the pivot/rotator thing. Just pull it over the servo arm far enough for the push
rod to attach, or.... thinking it through further.... maybe if the servo can handle the extra
load, just cover the servo, arm & all & just push the "z" in the rod through the rubber.

I'll work on this tonight, & let you know what I find.

Dukster, I misread your post the first time. The balloon cover is the shroud idea boiled
down, about as far as I think it could go. In misreading your comment... how about
moving the servo outboard, but one would have to figure out where to put it....
maybe between the rec'r & elevator servo?

Hmmmm, think on this, I will....

I think I'll try the balloon idea first...
